In this report, I answer the following question:
“I was sitting around the campfire just next to Dingo Piss Creek talking to a guy about his LS powered GU Patrol. He explained that it was making around 200kw at the wheels on a dyno, but mentioned that he had to replace the regular 'Safari' style snorkel with a custom 4" stainless steel snorkel so that he could gain more air flow to make those numbers.
“How is that possible if snorkels don't increase air flow? PS my 4WD is fitted with a snorkel, and besides that fact that I've done Cape York, Arnhem Land and the Victorian High Country in it, it makes me feel really tough when I pull up to the Woolies carpark to pick up my supply of toilet paper, YEEEEESSSSSSS” - Sam

It had never occurred to me that people talk of snorkel’s in terms of performance improvements. There is only one real reason to have a snorkel, as I found out a few years ago, perhaps late 70’s, maybe early 80’s. I was in my blue Land Cruiser (An FJ45 from 1973 which was full of safety features such as the driver sitting on top of the fuel tank to make sure it didn’t come loose in the rough stuff - yesssss.) I was following my mate at the back of his farm. He had a newer model, and it had a diesel and a snorkel. We got to a creek, he crossed easily with water up to the bonnet, and I stayed behind and wished I had one of those new fangled things. And when I got it, it would have a snorkel too. In my older age I now have the comfort of a Land Cruiser Sahara, but it definitely has a snorkel. I wouldn’t go through water up to the bonnet unless I had to - it is not good for a car, but I have been through water over the tyres and I was glad the snorkel was there. I had no idea I was also using it as a performance enhancement. I guess I don’t spend enough time talking to the guys down at Dingo P*ss Creek.

Done a lot of outback driving, super dusty conditions, you can literally see the dust plumes. The dust is thicker down lower, no two ways about it. You can't see anything when travelling right behind a car, the further back away from the car you get, the better you can see because the dust falls back down to the ground. It clears from the top down, you can blab on all you like about it but gravity is real, and the air is clearer higher up away from the duster chirners....er, I mean wheels. And it's not the dust that my wheels are making that's the problem, it's the dust from either the car in front, or the road train that's coming in the other direction that gives you grief. If you go off the tar, then a snorkel is worthwhile, plus, a hell of a lot of trucks have one or two snorkels as standard equipment. It seems like every road train that does the outback dirt roads has twin snorkels standard.

@@davexb6595 Mate I didn't actually see a question in that sentence, but the normal state of affairs on outback dirt roads is if you're on your own, or in a group and you're the lead car, then dust isn't much of a problem. The further back in the convoy you are the more dust you're eating. I've had to drop back well over 1km behind the car in front on some roads on a still day so that I can see where I'm going. If a car and especially if a road train passes in the other direction then you have to pull over and stop because visibility can be zero. You can see the density of the dust as it settles and it clears from the top down. We put socks on the top of the snorkels in bad conditions. Somebody should do a scientific study on the density of dust particles relative to their height above the road to put this to bed. Meanwhile, my practical experience says use a snorkel, or "raised air intake" as Land Rover calls it, as far as I'm concerned.

Ye, I would like a firm answer to this. I lived in Nullunby and we put a snorkel in for creek crossings. Though noticed that when I blew my filter out. It’s was half as dusty. I regret not popping in a pre filter. Also, when on the black top we took a temp of the road at a foot up and it was 65deg, at snorkel heat it was under 50. Love to know from an engineers opinion. We asked about the prefilter and. Snorkel size would restrict airflow and they said the turbo would suck as much as it wanted so don’t upgrade. A lot of intercooler are moved forward away from the engine heat to the front to get the cooler air, though how does that work when u can cook a steak on the road in summer?

Very true Jonathan... I fitted a safari snorkel to my 100series cruiser 1hdfte model. YESSS the greatest diesel engine or one of, invented I think?. Only because my lovely wife insisted on taking the quick way to town,which is about 2 minutes faster than the sealed road. The inner guard inlet thingy was filling my airfilter within 2500ks. Since the snorkel filters look great at 10000 ks but I chang e them anyway. But I did notice it down a tad on power after the install... Banged a dominate kings dump pipe back 3inch system with the rear muphler delete and bang she really came to life. Did gain a little fuel economy after all said and done(when I'm driving) Happy wife Happy life so the say. 410000ks and still doesn't use a drop of oil. Long winded I know but some manufacturers did a shit job to stop dust ingress and Toyota Is one of them. Look at the 200series?. No I don't do a great deal of swimming with my 4wd but the bulldust will kill any engine quickly if getting ingested through the so called clean air source wich in the 100 series is the inner guard. I'm sure manufacturers are on to this now or not? As long as the viechle is out of warranty or voids the warranty they could not give a shit. Love the content electric jesus and his dominions must need a reply???

My V6 Tarago has a “snorkel”. It’s tucked under the bonnet where nobody can see it and was thoughtfully installed by Toyota in the factory. My experience so far after 8 years ownership is that it works perfectly well supplying the engine with air from “down there”. Goes without saying that my mighty Tarago will never be required to go wading across the terribly deep DP Creek so no external snorkel required; a fact that no doubt also applies to well over 90% of the vehicles with such an accessory fitted.

its so easy to make the judgement on snorkels just reading websites and reviews. i agree their advantages do seem exaggerated but their primary purpose is still valuable as insurance if you make an error of judgement on the depth of water. its only going to be a 4-5 figure mistake so why wouldn't you for something so cheap, especially considering i haven't yet heard of any disadvantages of it which is often a side effect of 4x4 modifications. and although the snorkel itself doesn't include this, it can give you the option to fit a dust bowl pre-filter which DO work.

Hahaha, that was a bit of a surprise John. Nobody has ever dedicated a KZbin video to me before, so thank you very much. My question was a genuine one about about increased or decreased airflow and in particular, relating to those vehicles that have been fitted with a larger engines from a different manufacturers, eg LS powered GU. Your previous Snorkel video reminded me about the time I heard others talking about this LS powered GU and mentioned that they had to change the snorkel to get those numbers on the dyno so I thought I'd ask the most knowledgeable person possible. Also, I just wanted to clear a few things up- I do not own an LS powered GU Patrol, and if I had around $9000 to spend on my 4WD, an LS (or any engine conversion) would be the absolute last thing on my list...
@turbostyler
@turbostyler 2 жыл бұрын
The stock iron man snorkel on your mates car before the v8 was probably a restriction so he got a bigger diameter pipe to make that power. He could have made even more power if he didn't hook up the LS to the snorkel in the first place and just left it on for decoration. But I imagine if he's using the 4wd for actual 4wd purposes, he just said bugger it and upgraded the snorkel size to suit a bigger NA motor.
@kralizeccraig5578
@kralizeccraig5578 3 жыл бұрын
What's really often ignored is a lot of standard air intakes in many vehicles both car and 4wd are based on a venturi tube. I think the belief is that if you remove the 'restriction' of the smallest-ID section of the venturi tube you improve 'airflow' and can measuribly increase the 'intake air pressure' that makes flow through the filter box more 'efficient'.

A cone filter stuck on the end of the air feed pipe and the original air box ripped out, in one case like this the owner had used cable-ties to fix the air temp sensor to the air-con pipes . I saw it and was thinking no wonder the damn thing is not running right, i told the owner he was losing power with this setup and factory was better. I was told i was talking BS and it works because he can feel the difference.

As per your last comment would you say all of Toyota's engineers are wankers and unintelligent due to the 79 series landcruiser coming from the factory with a raised air intake and pre-cleaner?

JC just a quick1 incase someone else mentions (which has not been publicised even to Nissan)...Harrop did a test of airflow temps for the new Y62 patrol when collecting data for their latest Supercharger, pre and post snorkle at 60kph was a difference of 8.1 deg Ç with snorkle fitted...(this at the ambient temp of 33c...with 80% humidity, but is cooler in hot temps where the intake of air is near front wheelwell)... The snorkle alone with no remap and the 8.1c cooler air increased the stock engine power by 4.9hp...an un noticeable increase in power with V8, it didn't reduce engine coolant temp, but MAY lower EGTs (by 40-55 deg ç..which isn't really much beneficial effect when egts get up to 650 deg ç) ... also fitting wasnt worth the outlay/install cost IF the 4wd does not go offroad... They worked out without a remap being done, if you wanted extra power you'd gain more hp with just a change of fuel from 92 to 98prem. (Y62 V8 5.6 Patrol) or the fitment of an aftermarket exhaust. The only way such a minimal decrease in air temp would be of any gain or worth the effort fitting, would be after a remap was done. Also as you stated, "there was not any increase in actual induction airflow with the addition of an aftermarket snorkle".. is true, BUT in areas of heavy dust (Aussie snow) and 'bulldust', the snorkle does make a substantial difference in deliveration of cleaner air into the airbox. Keep up great work JC 👍👍👍

In regards to air being lest dusty up there, I think you have failed to notice that a lot of utes have their intake in the wheel arch. Or to be more precise in the fender void

"Air intakes aren't under the bonnet" Mitsubishi Triton 4WD 1994 - 1998 turbo and non-turbo diesels 2.5L says; I do! It's on my drives side, under my bonnet, right next to the exhaust and intake manifolds. It's no problem though since I never got an inter-cooler when the folks made me all those years ago.

I agree snorkels are not needed unless there is a high (pun intended) chance one will be facing a water crossing. I would however argue that the depth is not super relevant. If there is an unexpected dip, even for a second, bye bye engine. So basically, If you actually go off-roading, then for $400 or so (self fitted) it's a very good idea as it doesn't take much for a deep puddle to form, or a river to rise on your return, etc.

John, would not just replacing the wing mirror housings with domestic 24" fans, (in reverse) be a more "greenish" mod? One could feel like Kingsford Smith while achieving at least 0.1 kph speed increase...down there!

John where I live you need more than the 4x4 company's can provide when in winter you can get bogger in our own track to the farm and nothing to hock a winch too and have to walk back to get the tractor and it gets bogged and then the K9 you can see where this is going, that's the Hay plains in winter and when it really rains you don't need a snorkel you need a boat, cheers.

Talk about a topic that I believe is probably the only one with it's own weather system. Telling a snorkel owner that the hardware addition to the vehicle is an impediment, is a great way to get into a fistfight. Which will leave you needing some of those moist heating pads from Battle Creek to treat the injuries.

Will an aftermarket air intake improve airflow? Well is it a restriction in the first place? If no, then save your money. The only way to know that for sure is to place air pressure sensors before and after and see if there is a delta. Usually the only thing fitting an aftermarket intake will do is mess up your MAF sensor calibration or cause turbulence over the sensor.

I've often wondered about the snorkel. Looking at my 21 Everest ARB recommend fitting an ARMAXX snorkel with a tune. When I asked the question "What about the hose that goes to the turbo? It goes from 76mm to 51mm and then to 48mm all ID going into the intercooler. Wouldn't that restrict airflow?" "No" he says "Because the large volume of air ready to be sucked into the turbo will more easily be compressed allowing your bigger than stock intercooler to compress more oxygen". "Your engine is slightly over-fueled from the factory so the extra oxygen will provide more power without much of a tune." A google search provides a LOT of information pointing to the EVIDENCE for more power and better fuel economy with little to no evidence to the contrary. Who to believe????

Fitted a snorkel and a set of stubby extractors to my GR120 Prado and dropped 1.5 - 2.0 litres per 100km at least. May have been mostly exhaust but snorkel is staying. Also 120 Prados had a habit of the right front wheel directing water into the wheel well air inlet and damaging motors. Only at certain water depths with the right speed. Cheap insurance if you ask me. Obviously John would know this🤔

Just to be fair, not all snorkels are equal. As a professional gardener I can attest to the effectiveness of a snorkel on a push mower. This largely eliminates any buildup of bulldust in the air filter, especially during a dry summer. Chugging along at 4.3 kmh does not put the front of the mower ahead of the ensuing fan driven dust storm a la 4WD on the Birdsville track. Even with the snorkel I recommend a maximum fording depth of 3cm.
