I've got a good one for you and I'm happy to name and shame ha - Northshore VW (also tried Bill Buckle VW Brookvale and had the same response). I bought a T6 Transporter - shortly after purchase i realised there was a recall for leaking rocker cover gasket. Took it to Northshore VW approx 2 after purchase to replace rocker cover gasket. Upon receiving the car back there was a very strong smell of diesel. On inspection there was a very large diesel leak on the top of block around fuel lines above injectors. Immediately took the car back. 6 weeks later i was told all 4 injectors had failed and I would need to pay $4.5k - at my own cost - not covered under warranty. Car had less than 1000kms on it, and had driven less than 20kms since the rocker cover gasket was replaced by the dealer. VW told me they had not touched the fuel system when doing the rocker cover and insisted that, no, miraculously, all 4 injectors had failed. NOT true, as in order to remove the rocker cover, the fuel lines and injectors MUST be removed (the fuel lines are also designated single use by VW and are supposed to be replaced with new ones once removed). After nearly 5 months, and legal action, Northshore VW finally conceded (although never admitted liability) and fixed under 'good will'. The entire time was left carless and never offered a replacement/loan car. Fun times.

I know this is three months old, but I just have to share a story on dealership servicing. I recently bought a brand new GR Yaris. At the one month mark, they offer you a complimentary spanner check. ie they want to introduce you to the service department to build a relationship to get you to service your car with them. Anyway, by the time I booked my car in I'd done about 1,000kms and I'd seen some reports of swarf build up in the rear diff oil during the running in process. So as I drop the car off I say to the service advisor I'd like to have the rear diff oil dropped and replaced at my expense. Immediately he questions why I'd want to do that and after I explain it he goes on to say if there are any warranty issues down the track, Toyota would want to know why I'd chosen to change the rear diff oil at 1,000kms. I was gobsmacked. Here I was over servicing my car at my own expense, being told that I could be setting myself up for a warranty denial. Anyway, I leave the car with them for the day, they do the spanner check and replace the diff oil as I requested and I pick the car up. As I'm driving away I look up at the service sticker and see that it has the service intervals on it for a bog stock Yaris - every 15,000kms or 12 months whichever occurs first. The GR has a 6 month/10,000km service interval. So now I'm wondering what diff oil they've stuck in the car. Of course there's no indication on the receipt. I won't be going back. I'll be using a specialist motorsport mechanic I've used before. I know they know what they're doing and I won't get any attitude if I decide I want to spend a bit more money on over servicing my car.

I know of someone who purchased a car from a well-known dealer and took their car back there to be serviced, because most people think that their car will be in the best hands doing that, and when they came to collect their car and started it up, the engine made all sorts of terrible noises. They went back to the service department and explained the situation and they drove the car back to the workshop and 10 minutes later came back and said they couldn't find anything wrong. The car ran normally now. The dealership did not admit to doing anything wrong, BUT WHAT HAPPENED is that when they drained the oil, they FORGOT to put new oil in it. So when they took it back to the workshop for 10 minutes, all they did was put new oil in and it sounded and ran normally BUT WOULD NOT ADMIT TO FORGETTING TO PUT OIL IN IT. The car was only 12 months old and the engine was probably F**** because of what they did. BUT remember, take your new car back to the dealer for servicing because they are the best, most well-trained technicians to work on your new car.

I used to work a service station in the early 80’s. one of our regular customers had a Sigma. The engine in it wasn’t very healthy. I agree with everything you say about service intervals. I run an independent service and repair shop specialising in European vehicles. We see 3 to 5 year old cars with "dealer" service histories which need thousands of $ spending on them to fix issues. Brake fluid and coolant, never flushed and changed, 24,000 km oil changes leading to sludge, coked up inlet manifolds and throttle bodies. We recommend servicing every 6 months or 10,000kms. It might seem excessive but its what we do to all of our own loan fleet comprising a dozen cars, all of which are between 100,000 and 230,000km and between 9 and 12 years old and none of which gives us any trouble.

The car was being fixed, so I pointed to the plate under the bonnet where it says it was made overseas "oh, but it's a british company" - Vauxhall at the time was owned by General Motors. So it's an American car made in Spain (I think - this was 2 decades ago). If we'd been using Hondas (Swindon), Nissans (Sunderland) or Toyotas (Burnaston) they're have been providing more British jobs as all those cars are actually made here - even if they DO have Japanese brands. Oh. And we wouldn't have been having the conversation anyway as those cars wouldn't have required me to talk to the motorpool about the vehicle quite so regularly as this "british" Vauxhall did.

It took 4 trips to the dealer, each time they told they road tested the car. After a couple of days with the car they discovered the geometry was out of alignment. You mentioned the idea of not filling the oil properly, and I just had that happen at one of the large quick service places. My wife asked why I was bothering to check the level which should make sense, but I had a nagging feeling that they did something like that and, sure enough, it was a quart low, and it definitely isn't that the car is leaking or burning oil. The best part is that I'm sure the corporate lawyers have weaseled wording into the agreement we sign that absolves them from being required to completely fill the oil. Corporations really suck for consumers. Another thing worth mentioning is that I had a third-party warranty transferred to me by a private seller, which turned out to be amazing. It really was comprehensive. Even the shop manager was surprised that they covered so much. He had begrudgingly submitted the claim, assuming they would deny it. The company was USAA, which serves military, veterans, and their eligible family members. I think they have since stopped selling extended warranties because they are too costly when you actually pay for things.

Be careful guys - the idea that an old car lasting longer is better for emissions is not necessarily true. It feels true intuitively, but the very vast majority of a cars lifetime impact is in its use. A surprisingly small improvement in efficiency in a new car over an older one means in many cases scrapping a 10 year old and making a new more efficient one from scratch and running that for 10 years is better than running the old one for 20. So don’t automatically assume keeping an old one on the road is better. In some cases that is true, but it’s not a universal rule.

As per service intervals, I've already posted a comment on a similar video: EVERY SINGLE MANUAL of EVERY SINGLE car I drove, ACTUALLY states the LONG intervals are jn ideal conditions only. Each manual had an asterix next to the high mile number and if you jump to the explanation of the asterix, it basically tells you to HALF the interval if driven in one of the following: and then proceeds to name EVERY driving scenario except pure highway driving. So NO the manual not trying to fool you, it's just that people read them at a glance and the dealers don't tell you to read the fine print. I do changes twice a year, or roughly every 3.000-5.000 miles, BECAUSE my manul states to do, and never had any problems with any of my cars. Big thanks to you Re-Driven guys, you are doing a great job for ordinary people and a lot of people are following you, but I would give the advice for even much more people who should follow you to save a lot of money with your great advices all over the world. Here in Norway we have 10 years warranty from Toyota and Lexus even if some of the services are taken in other serious car companies, but after the cars are 5 years old we will get one new year of warranty for each time we have a new service at a Toyota or Lexus dealer for up to 10 years and 200.000 km, and this is a real warranty. But the funny facts are that with proper service you normally don't need a 10 years warranty on these brands, but it's a clever way to tell the customers how incredible reliable these cars are with proper servicehistoric. Thanks guys. Best Regards from Arne in Norway

This interview makes me so happy I bought a Tesla. It’s well known where Teslas are made - Fremont, Texas, Berlin or Shanghai depending on which part of the world you are. No servicing for the first 4-5 years and no dealerships to suck your money away. My previous cars start feeling old once they hit 100,000km, but for an EV it’s just par for the course and you don’t notice their age. Charging from solar means NO combustion, not even remote combustion (alright - maybe at the Sun) And the slightly more emissions used to make them are recovered within the first 2 years, thereafter being totally emissions free. People are always going to be buying new cars anyway so it might as well be an EV. Not the solution, but at least better than the alternative which was what got us into the mess in the first place.

I was fortunate in buying a second hand vehicle from a small Used-car Dealer who offered Third-party Used-car Warranty, which I researched well before purchase. I negotiated to include a higher level of Warranty in the price, as the next level included cover for not just the basic "engine & drivetrain" but also the vehicle "running electronics" and a 3-year Warranty period. The vehicle was then serviced at Specialist Third-party Workshops since purchase in 2014. The Bosch Alternator and the Ignition Control Module both failed around the same time, and within the Warranty Period. The Warranty Company paid for BOTH items, their fault diagnosis and the fitting of new components at around $800+ each without any arguments. So there are some Reputable Third-party Warranties available, and the only "catch" to me was the requirement to have the vehicle "serviced (Oil & Oil Filter change) " and check at a Licensed Mechanic at 10k intervals instead of the factory 15k interval. So $1600+ that didn't come out of my pocket. Moral of the story as usual - DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

In Jamaica to maintain your warranty the Subaru dealer requires you to service the car at the dealer every 5000km or 6 months, at a cost of about 250-350 usd for an oil and air filter change. Thats 3000miles in the 2020s like if we are in the 1950s. For comparison, an independent shop will do the same service using synthetic oil and genuine air and oil filter for under $100 inc labour.

According to Volvo figures the electric version of the petrol xc40 produces 75% more pollution to make & based on average usage the 2 vehicles will have contributed the same amount of pollution at the 15 yr point, with the ev surging past the petrol model in terms of reduced pollution after that time. No mention made of number of batteries used or even if factored in. Work that into the sales figures & it's obvious that current EV vehicles will make the pollution problem an order of magnitude worse for a very long time to come just on that aspect alone. EVs can outperform supercars easily, they can handle & stop better than a race car due to very low centre of gravity & don't make any noise. In the meantime we are all subsidizing them as the off peak electricity prices as well as peak have goon through the roof

I bought a brand new Mazda 6 from Eurocars Mazda in Artarmon back in 2007 and had it serviced there religiously (was my first new car and didn't know any better), until I moved away from the area and started taking it to a local guy in Castle Hill. I took it to him for its 2nd major service, out of warranty, and he asked me if it had ever been serviced. He reckoned the only filter that had ever been changed was the oil. I was not a happy chappy. The same dealer also replaced a brand new transmission with a reconditioned one, after misdiagnosing something to do with a flange on the exhaust. That reconditioned one then failed 6 months later, and Mazda insisted they'd fit a brand new one again. When I picked it up, I got "No, it's reconditioned because we don't fit new ones".

There are a few issue that I think you have been overlooking in new cars... First; Direct injection with a turbo charger gas engine. The carbonizing on the valves has to be done every 40,000-75,000 miles for a price of ~$1800 US for parts and labor. It is not a question of if it needs to be done, but when. You also need to hope that nothing plastic was cracked or stressed during the removal of the intake manifold(s), fuel injectors, fuel lines, wiring harness, etc. or it will add to the cost. The first Ford Eco-Boosts were initially throwing error codes that would shut down the engine immediately, without any kind of "limp-mode" to allow you to pull off the road. Second: Small V-6 and I-4 motors that are being turbocharged to get big-block V-8 or mid-size V-6 performance out of, respectively. In order to get the engines lighter it looks (from KZbin tear-down videos) that there is a whole lot less steel between cylinder bores, more water journal passages between cylinders, closer cylinder spacing, and not enough head bolts or studs. Couple this with head-gasket failures, and you have more engine replacements than anything else. Third: CVT transmissions.... Most of them are looking for a place to die once they are manufactured.... The Toyota hybrid CVT is about the only CVT transmission that is reliable and/or bullet proof , but it really is not a CVT transmission with the belt and two pulleys.

USA manufacturers as well as others like Australia made cars that have lasted twice that long.Case in point, my '65 Olds Cutlass Sports Coupe is 59 years old but looks and drives great and has no bits of plastic that will ever fall off it. Actually, it really hasn't got much plastic at all. Vinyl upholstery, small amount of plastic on the wiring , top of the dash pad and that's about it.The fact that it uses 22.7 litres per 100km of premium fuel is an issue but horsepower! Seriously though I wonder what the cost of ownership would be like over those 59 years compared to every few years replacing the machine with a newer but less robust car. Bet it is a low number.

It's a little tappet rattly at cold start, very minor, but no issue when warm, sure, it's overdue but I don't trust dealerships to do it as loose valves don't cause problems like tight valves do. The Stealership says they're checked and adjusted if needed every 60000klms and they had kittens when mine hadn't been touched, then I forked out $1000 for an oil change service and transmission fluid replacement. They told me my tappets didn't need adjusting as they were not noisy at 120000klms. LOL, another money extracting scam.
