Typical Toyota bias. I tow a 3.2t van and have towed it with a Colorado, 200 series and a Y62 which I have all owned. The Y62 by far is the best and it is more economical than the 200 series despite being petrol. The 200 series was using 24lt/100 whilst the Y62 is using 21lt/100. The Y62 is also cheap to service and maintain. They are also a lot cheaper to buy. Also with the Patrol you don't need to buy a lock up torque converter or a larger transmission cooler. I think this video is a bit bias as most of them are Toyota fans. The Patrol is a very underrated 4wd, but those who have bought them have never looked back. PS I used to be a Toyota person through and through until I drove the Y62. Any way just my 2 cents worth.

I get the impression that vehicles in Australia are considerably more expensive than they are in the United States. That said, the 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 "Classic" which is the previous body style (the one featured in this video) is still listed as a build-and-price on ram's website. Picking a "Tradesman" trim, club-cab with the 6'4" bed, 4x4, V8, with a 3.92 gear ratio and a rear limited slip, with the big gas tank is around $35,000 USD MSRP, which is is around $46,500 Australian. Obviously this does not include the ute-tray or other modifications, but even import/shipping costs bring it up to $55K AUD that's still twenty thousand dollars less than the 79-series. Even if it's thirsty, that can pay for an awful lot of fuel. And that's before considering the 2500 or 3500 classes, where the GVWR and GCWR go up considerably. I guess that North America is lucky in that regard, we get the heavier trucks that can be operated with a standard class license.

Hey this video came up on my feed so I thought I’d watch it. I have a few tow vehicles including a trackhawk which tows my 3tonne van with ease. I’ve found my v6 amarok a sensational tow rig. The only letdown is the tow ball weight. That’s easy to get around because of the payload. I move weight from the van to the back of the Ute. It makes the amarok heavier. It actually levels the springs and levels the Ute perfectly. It has ridiculous amounts of power and towa in 8th and 7th gear. Only rarely will it drop back further in the gear range on a tough hill. I drove from geraldton to perth in one tank. Overtook quite a few rangers and 200 series. I have a modded grand Cherokee with the 5.7 hemi like the ram. It’s so much more fun off road, it pulls incredibly good but sinks juice like an outback driller. In comparison I can only make it from Yanchep to jurien bay on one tank. But the v8 sounds mint and it great to hear it. It’s only a 5 speed gearbox and I have not adjusted the gear ratios to accommodate the big wheels so it would have an affect on the fuel usage. I think this video is missing quite a lot of detail and can be misleading to the future buyers. I saw no mention of mods and the affect on GCM. I’ve seen plenty a prado driver towing while pointing to the sky or many overloaded 200 series. The 200 series has virtually no payload and with barwork roof racks and a few other mods you have no payload. In fact a lot of 200 series are overloaded. You talked briefly about the ram GCM. Overloaded 200 series is a massive problem. They can do it but I think the whole industry is missing that. What about the ali guy not mentioning that putting a massive tray on the back seriously affects all these specs. I think you should do another video about weighting payload etc. there’s only one driver and no payloads. Each vehicle has a unique combination which will make it perform at its best.

So let me get this straight, you asked these experts... who, lets see they all either own a chopped 200 or drive a 200 or a Toyota and lol and behold what do they choose a Toyota 200 as the best car. Interesting fact for your diesel expert, I mean, I guess he doesn't deal with petrol's cars, so not an expert but y62 don't need trans coolers (have you looked at the size of the factory one??) nor lock up convertor kits that's all standard mate. What's not standard is those tyres mate they're huge i know mine feels like it gains 50 hp when i swap the stockies back on surely that wouldnt impact the results. I mean compared to the 200 which has 10 upgrades to make it better for towing noticed big tyres aren't one of them

Well done guys, sometimes the truth hurts.👍 Oh and Shaun and “ experts “, Dodge hasn’t made RAM’s for over a decade. FCA - Split RAM from Dodge way back in Oct 2009 to become a seperate company and manufacturer . The old Dodge RAM’s are pretty much known as Dodge Cummins these days ( because of the 6BT Cummins engine). The Y62 uses a similar amount of fuel when towing as the 200 series. Common knowledge these days. 😉

A good rule of thumb to follow is; If what you are towing weighs as much as the tow vehicle then you are going to have trouble. I have a 2500 Ram with a 6.4 liter V8 and tow a 2021 Rockwood Mini Lite with it all over the eastern US. Those little trucks are fine for the small campers but if you get in high winds or mountains then you got troubles. My camper is 13 feet and 4 inches tall so the wind hits the front and holds you back when we towed with the 1500 Ram with the 5.7 liter motor. Both motors were as you would say petrol/gas motors.

In Alberta, Canada I tow my ‘85 Toyota pickup on a carhauler regularly. We travel 2200 kms to Moab Utah ever year or so as well as many local trips. Almost all are on tarmac roads. Several long 7-8% grades with one that is 15 kms up at 10%and 15 kms down at 10% on the other side with hairpin turns so can’t ‘get up any steam’. I do this with a tuned Colorado with a 2.8 Duramax and 6 speed auto transmission. Total weight is 5.7 tonnes, properly distributed with an equalizing hitch. I have been towing for more than 45 years with no incidents. The Colorado is definitely maxed out and must be driven like a small truck with a heavy load. Reall should be towing with a larger truck and will be when this one is done. Good information!

Couldn't have said it better myself mate. We have a couple of 2.0L rangers at work, although purchased 6 months apart they both have roughly 150k on them. One we use as a non towing pilot vehicle, and the other tows a 2.5 to 3.2 ton trailer 5 days a week. Compared to the pilot ute the dedicated tow ute is pretty much rooted. It just feels a bit baggy and worn out and is starting to develop some odd vibrations somewhere in the drive train. And I suspect if we continue to use it the way we do, I honestly doubt it will see 200k. I think, as with a lot of these modern utes, thing's like ten speed autos tend to give you a false sense of ability. Just because it'll tow 3.5 ton, doesn't mean you should. I'm thinking for the average man on the street, most of these double cabs would be perfectly fine for the odd jaunt to the boat ramp or towing a caravan over the holidays. But in the real world, as a long term tow vehicle, I think there just a bit light weight. Next upgrade will be a proper light truck, such as a Hino or Canter 4x4. Something a bit more fit for purpose, at least for us.
