Up the Wilberforce incidentally is where my mum and dad had their honeymoon, in about 1964.

Simpler times back then, did they even have a 4WD or maybe just walked in.

@@realneilsadventures My dad culled deer for the council back then. He'd go away for months. Using a Savage 243. They tramped in for their Honeymoon. We also use to stay up past Bainham next to the Aorere river close to Salisbury Falls every Christmas and go gold panning and sluicing for a few years around 1970. Been up Mount Stevens a few times panned and sluiced for gold up there. All the gear carried up in our packs. My love for the NZ outback comes from there I guess.

Great looking trip, was landowner permission required for this trip? I'm down in South Otago and it would be worth a look

Check the map on the Doc web site and then you can see where the private land is and riverbed or conservation land. We only saw the one Private land sign and didn't go past that.

NOTE ...... Just Fixed up the bit that made no sense, Nor sure what was going on there if anything. Are the rivers owned? Some of you may notice that more and more areas are off limits or you cant camp without a plumbed in shitter onboard. Now on the face of it, it may seem reasonable. But the conspiracy theorists among us may suggest there's an agenda playing out here. That agenda some would say doesn't involve any of us having a good time in 4WD's or indeed any automobiles for very much longer. The difference between conspiracy theory and fact seems to be about 6 months. Enjoyed the trip think I'll get the 94 Hi lux single cab up there some time soon. May be i'll miss seeing the sign 😀

River beds are crown land, but in the Wilberforce there is some land between the river bed and the bush line that is owned by a farmer. The Doc web site has a good map.

@@realneilsadventures I wouldn't go on to privately owned land, thought i'd better point that out.

@@ranter7100 Yes I'm the same but sometimes you just don't know its private land. That sign at Moa Hut only got put up this year.

@@realneilsadventures Unless you put a sign up telling people to stay off there is implied right of access, Legally its not trespassing until the owner / holder has told you 3 times your trespassing. Not that i'd do that to someone who owned land. But the corporations / state do it to us all the time. Hence why growing numbers of people are removing implied right of access with signs at the gate.
