A million thanks, because of your video I was able to add a switch to completely disable the 4x4 function on my 2007 ford explorer and I no longer hear the 4x4 auto kick on all the time !! I will admit I did not add all the components that you did but I was able to use your concept and simply spliced the gray and orange wire and added a on and off switch. So far it is working like a charm. Thanks again JEG's Garage !!!

I have a 3rd gen Explorer and I too am afraid of auto 4x4 just slamming into 4x4 mode. I have seen my gas gauge just drop a time or two, with no over excelleration, and I suspect it may have slipped into 4x4. My father is 2 wd man and never uses 4wd. Maybe you and he are ahead of the game. I like the idea of a 4x4, mode and so I am contemplating the brown wire mod rather then the grey and orange wire mod in your 4th gen Explorer, just to keep them separated so the little computer brain doesn't get them confused and slip into 4x4 mode unexpectedly, if that happens at all I don't know.

This is AWESOME!!!! So freaking cool dude. I see everyone using a toggle switch, but it's not for me. Switches and buttons and all that looks tacky to me (not bashing anyone). I'm going to do the BWM on my 02 Explorer but don't want a switch sticking out. I might have to do this same thing. I want it to be as "OEM" as possible in looks and function. If I never seen an Explorer's 4x4 setup, I would think that's factory. Even the LED you put in looks like Ford would've done it.

Nice work! You really should set up some kind of per-made mod ( ready to install ) set, to be installed by those who are able to do such work. With this Video ( anyone could look up with the link address you would include ) and any install instructions you would supply. A person could even take their SUV to a shop and they could install it for anyone that couldn't do it themselves!. I've been looking at SUV's to buy, I like the Explorer, but do not like the Auto 4x4 function, and an Expedition only fits in my Garage if I remove the Roof rack. I fell in love with my sons Expedition, and that's how I found out it wouldn't fit with removing the Roof rack

There is always power to the front wheels, it’s 75 rear 25 front in auto mode. You can tell it’s always awd, just turn a sharp 90 in some loose gravel, you will feel the truck slip a little in the front, tale tale sign it’s in awd. Or get on some ice, punch it and immediately the front wheel spins. It’s definitely always powering the front wheels!

There is a pretty fair amount of debate on this. Here is my analysis of the V8 transfer case in the 2006-2010 models. Im being specific, because I think the V6 may be different. When in 4x4 Auto, the rig is in 2wd. The transfer case has the ability to add power to the front wheels, and it does so more often than it should, but I dont believe its distributed beyond 50/50. I.E. with traction control completely off, rear tires slipping, transfer case engages and sends 50 percent to the front. Its not smooth, and most times it almost sounds like its hurting parts. Locked in 4x4, it acts like a regular transfer case. And Low Range acts like Low Range. With power to the engagement motor interrupted (like with my hack) the transfer case does absolutely nothing. With traction control off, power stays to the rear 100%. I could be wrong on this of course. I havent been inside the transfer case. But just seeing how it acts when you only remove power to the engagement motor, it kind of makes sense.

This is my first winter with my 08 and driving from snow and ice to a dry road I thought for sure my front end was going to grenade with the sound it made. Even after driving on a dry road for a while, it would still kick on and off.

Can you effectively achieve the same thing by turning off traction control?
@JEGsGarage

Not really. It will still kick into 4x4. Turning off traction control by pressing the button once still leaves some of the systems on. If you press and hold for 5 seconds it turns everything off, but Auto 4x4 still functions.

My 06 clunks when I turn left hard either on four by four and low four by four. Would you know what is the issue JEG? When you got the transfer case changed at the dealer, you noticed no klonk and way smoothness. My Ford does not make any noise or feeling when I am in 4X4 auto. The vehicle is smooth as silk. Since I am second owner I do not know the history about my beast. What year did ford have a screen camera on the dash Sir ???I have to say you and I must be brothers from different mothers as I also complicate things JEGs. Thanks vf

@@victoryfirst2878 clunking seems to be pretty common when locked into 4wd. Mine did it too. Felt like it was the CV shafts binding to be honest. I tore the front end apart, checked the diff, replaced the CV shafts, no change. So I figured it was normal. The transfercase was still noisy even after it was replaced. It's just not a great system in my opinion. Turning it off like in this video makes it completely quiet, I can tell you that haha. I don't believe the 2006-2010 explorer came with a screen. Mine is a custom tablet installation.

@JEGsGarage
@JEGsGarage 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jesse. Its not the power wire...its the signal wire down to the transfercase motor. I THINK. You want the 4x4 module to think its doing its job. I has no way of knowing that the transfer case isnt doing what its told. And putting a toggle on it is totally fine. I like to overcomplicate things haha. I am trying very hard not to drill holes or make things stick out in this car. TO me...this is how it should have come from the factory.

4x4 auto automatically distributes power 50:50 under normal circumstances, or front or rear as needed, the only time a certain axle is engaged or disengaged is in a Part time AWD, auto just means it automatically sends power to whatever axle has most grip 4x4 auto functions more like a full time AWD
@JEGsGarage
@JEGsGarage 6 жыл бұрын
4x4 auto doesnt ever provide front wheel power only. Its either rear wheel drive, or 4 wheel drive. On/off. In my opinion, its not a good system. This vehicle doesnt have AWD, but I believe some of them do. In that case, I think they can feed power gradually, or to the wheels that need it. Being able to shut off the auto 4x4 is a great feature and I wish they gave that option from the factory.

Hello. I have 2008 mercury mountaineer premier v8 awd. It has spot for those three 4x4 buttons. But instead of buttons there is just triple square plug. I lifted out that plug and found there is a wire connector for the buttons. But seems like my car was just made to engage 4x4 automatically only. How ever I came to visit my parents in law yesterday and they have pretty steep and curvy driveway. We had allot of snow too. And I found out that my front wheels never engaging. And I had to park at bottom of the driveway. I have only rear wheel drive at all times. Not sure what's the cause. I have abs and traction lights on and we checked with my bro in law yesterday he had a computer. Found that left rear sensor is bad. Do you think that might be the cause for 4x4 not working? And do you think if I buy the buttons and install them, I will have manual control over the 4x4. Please help if you can. Thank you

So I bought one with motor for like 250 together with its original T-case control module from same donor vehicle. And I bought the buttons earlier. So I thought I'm gonna use all this components to modify my car. When T-case arrived I tested it. And I got assured that Brown wire that goes inside is clutch wire. Cuz it's been looking front and rear shaft outputs. But it was done without any noise. So I thought maybe mine is good. I traced that wire from underneath the car to glow box. Disconnected it from TCCM (and keept it disconnected till today), checked with multimeter to make sure that is the same wire. Than checked few other wires on that connector. Found positive and negative for relay power. Installed a switch and led light on my tripple square plug. Switch powers up relay relay connects positive to clutch wire. How ever I think on power off that clutch coil gives big inductive voltage jump and I burned 2 leds only third one I connected in series with rezistor. And it's good till today. So with all this experience I can tell that my car had some low percentage of power to my front but not enough to spin even on snowy surface. Now with my modification it has rear only or both with 100 percent to front and to rear. With the front completely off I noticed car feels lighter and fuel economy gain. And with front on goes easy thru snow half wheel high. That's all I need. Don't know why they design those cars so stupidly. That low percentage clutch slip on dry roads just eats engines energy as soon as you have little difference in tire thread diameter. And kills components.

No it is AWD. A Nissan GTR uses almost exactly the same setup, minus the low range transfer case. And honestly so are most of the AWD systems out there. It works like a dimmer switch, not an on off switch. The clutch pack which apply variable amounts of locking pressure to make adjust how much torque goes to the front.
@JEGsGarage
@JEGsGarage 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree with your understanding of the Ford transfer case. Its NOT AWD. Its auto 4x4. Big difference is that AWD has a "clutch" in the system to seamlessly and smoothly deliver power front to rear as needed. This does NOT do that. Power to the rear wheel is never reduced as far as I can tell, except through traction control. The front wheels do not get partial power/torque. Its abrupt and obvious when power is sent up front. Its basically like you are in a 4x4, and you get the rear wheels spinning and slam it into 4x4. I had to have the transfer case replaced, I feel, due to the application of 4 wheel drive. Im not the only one who has had issues with it. The added power of the V8 doesnt help haha.
@rangerover06sc
@rangerover06sc 2 жыл бұрын
@@JEGsGarage No it uses multiple clutches to provide variable locking force. All of these systems do. They are not just on/off switches. You probably only notice it when it applies high locking force.

Been like this since this video and my transfer case is fine. It shouldn't affect it. The transfer case in these is auto 4x4, not AWD. So it clanks in and out of 4X4 when needed. I'm simply denying it the ability to go into 4x4.

Driving style makes a big difference...but Ive tested 2wd vs Auto-4x4 numerous times through numerous tanks of gas, and it does add at least 1mpg. 1mpg isnt much, but for just disconnecting one wire, Ide say for the "cost" its an awesome improvement. Most times Im getting more than 1 extra mpg out of it. Esp on a longer drive.

Great fix, however not enough detailed instruction to start fooling around yourself. If you are going to tease Explorer owners with a fix you should include a specific list of parts needed & step by step instruction. That explanation was bit too scattered with off the cuff thoughts . You lost me. All I know, is it can be done and the rest is for me to figure out.

@JEGsGarage 2 жыл бұрын
I've never been accused of being a tease before! Haha. I show pretty much everything if you watch the whole video. I show the circuit and all. I sort of expect if you are going to try this, you'll have some experience messing around with components, switches, etc. If not, it might not be the best project to learn on. That transfer case is pricey! I had no reference, nothing to go by, which is probably why it seems a little scattered. I figured it out, and wanted to share. Step by step, like Chris Fix does, would be cool, but I just don't have the capabilities to develope my videos like that right now. Mostly like to share my work and hopefully inspire someone to get out and mess with this stuff...and maybe come up with a better idea!
