A short walk from home for a simple subject. I try and quash the myth that large format photography is complicated with this simple shoot. In lovely morning light I am using two different films - Fuji Provia 100 transparency and Ilford HP5 400 black and white 4x5" film. Hope you like the video, please leave a comment to let me know which version - colour or BW - you prefer.

interesting video, and the fact that this scene reminds me of a "midsummer Murders" episode, in which, coincidentally an LF photographer, shooting a single tree, gets strangled with his own lightmeter chord!!- so look behind you :-)) , and safe trip!!

Why would anyone give this the 'thumbs down'? Lovely video aesthetically (the 'thumb-downers' may need to Google that word), and very useful instruction. I'll be buying that app! :) I'm shooting mainly FP4 on a Horseman 6x9 Technical camera, so I preferred the B/W images. I've pushed HP5 to 800 when I was a music photographer in the 1980's, but I still prefer to use slower B/W film stock even with brighter light.

@@LeePengellyPhotography Personally, I think lower ISO film suits medium / larger format work best, and enhances the quality of the finished image. Just bought the Viewfinder app - would never have known about it without your video. :)

Enjoying your videos, informative and well explained. The light table section is a good idea with an analysis of the different exposures. I’m looking to take the plunge into large format and your series is helping to give me a push and I’ll certainly watch them again. I like the colour image best, I think the range and transition of the greens works well in the even light.

Very interesting video, Lee. I find I like the B&W version best (but great to see colour transparencies as well!) The simplicity of the composition is brought out best by the monochrome I think. Of course, it's all about personal taste - there's no right or wrong answer! Cheers!

Very nice compositions here - exactly the kind of thing I'm often on the lookout for when I'm out with my 4x5. On these images I think I prefer the HP5s because of the left-right gradient in the sky being so obvious in the Provias. Had the sky been more evenly blue across the scene I think I'd have probably gone for the transparencies because of the nice green and blue horizontal layers. Just as an aside, when you're discussing the HP5 negs aren't you getting them mixed-up? The areas you're saying are overexposed are - being negatives - actually underexposed.

I think I like the color exposure better, if there was more contrast in the black and white I might go for that one but the colors just pop so much. Is the focus a little off or is that what it would typically look like? Please don’t take that negatively I’m just curious, I’ve been shooting medium format and I’m almost always disappointed with how soft distant landscapes can be. I would love to get into large format at some point.

Ken deSantis Thanks Ken. Yes Fuji film is great on a light box. Focus wise, the background trees are out of focus due to the smaller aperture, I wanted that effect to make the main tree stand out. There is a little movement from wind in the colour shot but ok otherwise

@7:00 mentioned using polarizer, I presume that’s why the sky color was at an angle then blown out on the Provia? Presume the polarizer angle changed? Maybe mark it for 90-degree polarizing... I’ll have to do that myself as well.

Nice work. Appreciate your demonstration and thought process around exposure and negative selection. I'm a sucker for slides!, so the Provia is my favorite. Do you think a 1 or 2 stop ND grad would have helped to bring down the sky enough to make the negative a bit better? I enjoy your work as I continue in my own large format adventure with a Graflex camera. Keep up the good work.

Great video and love the idea of simplicity, even with 4x5 format! I really appreciate your delving into details and sharing what you've learned. I've got some Lee filters for my DSLR, how do you put them on the Intrepid? Is there an adapter ring or is it a DIY thing to add the System 100 holder? Thanks!
@LeePengellyPhotography
@LeePengellyPhotography 4 жыл бұрын
Jim Gibson Cheers Jim glad you enjoyed this one. Yeah I have been using both Lee and Benros filter systems on it. You need a step down ring which will take it from the LF lens size(normally around 40.5mm) to standard lens sizes (58mm upwards). The outer rings are standard then for the system holder.

Lee it is now 2021, how are you finding the Intrepid camera after all this time. I am contemplating getting one but have seen mixed comments about the build quality and reliabilitty..... Was thinking of getting a 120 back to keep cost down whilst learning as processing is so much cheaper and more convenient

ahhh, never touch any negative without gloves. not even the bad ones or the lighttable. And: couldn´t a smaller f stop number have been better to seperate the tree in the middleground from the background? it´s kind of merging in one soup of leaves (by contrast, colour and texture). sorry for my slam. anyway, thanks for the video and enjoy : )

Hi Lee. I enjoy your video's. I am a B&W guy but I like the color version more this time. I am sorry to say but your B&W shot is not sharp, it is nowere sharp so I think the frame sufferd from motion. As for using a polarizer, what a lot of photographers not seem to know is that the loss of light is ALWAYS 1 1/3 stopt, regardles the position of the filter. A polarizer acts as a ND filter and dims the reflections so you should not be foolded by the amount of light FROM the reflections. Ergo, when using a polarizer, substract 1 1/3 stop from your lightmetering, then you should be fine ;-) Bert.
