ExoScout, as someone who has just made the jump, all that is correct. I just made my second exposure with my 8x10, and looking at the negative....all that cost stuff went out the window, and I can’t wait to get out to shoot with it again. The view on the ground glass is worth the price alone for me. The only bad thing, it’s not like running out the door with a medium format or 35mm, gotta make sure you got everything packed away, it sucks getting some where, start setting up and discover you left x at home...

Extract from my dissertation about this video: Jason's video journey into exploring the mysteries of large format photography reveals the fundamental irony that is the subtext of the genre. It seemingly inherently evokes a sense of mystical wonderment, capturing light in a way that is uncanny to our everyday sensibilities. Yet this spiritual journey undertaken by Jason must be mitigated through supremely physical means. The very thing that leads him on this spiritual sojourn is an increasing dependence on the crass materiality of the medium. This is seen in the moment of his spiritual escape, only to be dragged back to this mortal coil by the very thing that granted him release. This Cartesian duality feeds into the sense of the liminal unreality that hallmarks the video.

Okay, I know this is a parody and I should post something sarcastic but I CRIED literal salt tears because from an outsiders perspective you have such a SUPPORTIVE partner whom allows you to photograph her and I know I'm supposed to recognize that I only see a small blip of your relationship but damn it hurts because I feel like my photography has been hard for past partners to see as my love language for them. I hope this gets lost amongst the witty comments but I just had to share. Thanks for creating the content you do.

Ok, Jason. You perked my interest and raised some memories. First, I loved your video. You example the feelings of many 35mm, 2 1/4, and 6X7 shooters. I used them all, slowly progressing through the lot as you talked about. I was floored when I developed and printed my first 2 1/4 and 6X7 formats, the latter with which I was blown away only raising my engarger an inch to get an 8X10 that was super sharp. Another experience similar to your video, but not as the operator, was a part time job I got with a commercial photographer in my local town. He used 8 X10 view with color transparencies and had a contract with a large international clock company to photograph their watches, timepieces, dresser top and wall hanging clocks. Extreme detail was needed. He had carpenters create a bedroom, open at one side for his camera and studio lit to perfection. On the bed, dresser tops and walls, where a hundred ? clocks and timepieces, filling almost every square foot. Looking closely at the transparency and with a magnifier, I could see every number on every piece, tack sharp. I never forgot what I saw. But, since I was a mobile shooter, I fell back into 35mm, then DSLR APSC followed by full frame, and now agonizing over mirrorless. Thank you so much for resurfacing some wonderful memories.

Takes me back to me old Deardorff Days. Sometimes w/ 8" x 10" Polaroid. At the bottom of a nickel or gold mine. Notes to the New Guy: #1. Best The Girl gets a night job before ya start processing your own B+W 8" x 10". #2. Brush-up on Ansel's 'Zone System'. #3. Yer gonna need an enlarger. I recommend Durst or Beseler. Probably an enlarging lens or two. And an easel that comes with a darkroom. Although with an 8" x 10" neg, just make a contact print. #4. Lotsa photographers who can afford 8" x 10" film holders, usually re-insert the dark slide after shooting. Some do forget😂 #5. To keep track of yer 1/2 dozen film holders while shooting, re-insert the dark slide w/ the Black Side OUT. The silver side out indicates un-shot 'frames'. I know ya know this. #6. I recommend the TOYA film holders @ $270 each (www.badgergraphic.com/opencart/index.php?route=product/product&path=176&product_id=1700). And Finally & coming in @ #7 - The Schneider Fine Art XXL 770mm/16.0 - $16,199.
