Hauling stuff in a Jeep can be tricky. You want to have tools, spare parts, camping gear etc, but you don't want these to be bouncing around if you are going off roading. On this episode I found a simple bumper basket and made it work inside my Summer Camp Jeep to have a safe place to tie down gear and parts.
This is the basket I used:

these are the Dometic hard side boxes I use for gear and tools

I built one of these a few years ago for my TJ. Used a $50 harbor freight ATV cargo basket and mounted it to the harness bar and cage c-pillar bars with some 1" square stock and muffler clamps. it was rock solid and could be taken in and out in just a few minutes.

Always enjoy your videos. Harbor Freight has similar hitch racks under " Haul-Master " & are rated to 500lb in both steel & aluminum. Could be worth looking at. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us.

I made the same thing with the same basket. 2 Rubbermaid "Action Packers" fit perfectly in with no slop.

Very nice! I used a Harbor Freight atv basket and had it in that location in my previous jeep (TJ) about 7 years ago. I attached it to the roll bar in the back and had hangers from the roll bar to the front of the basket. I could remove it by removing 4 bolts. I have a Bulldawg hard top with side opening windows on my LJ and I use half a basket in it mounted on unistrut pieces going side to side. The unistrut pieces bolt to the tub where the hard top bolts to it. I use the spring nuts in the unistrut to attach the half basket with 4 threaded knobs. Loosening knobs allows me to slide the basket side to side depending on what gear I’m carrying to access gear under it. If I put the half basket in the middle I can access gear under it from both sides.

Awesome video. I like the storage basket and glad you went with a piece of flatstock to finish the risers.

One thing I have done is use old chain links. 2 chain links, you can weld or bolt them. They make good tie downs, made my last ones out of old tire chains. I have one of the baskets and put my truck box in so I could use it on my jeep. Thanks.

When you do storage tray 2.0, may I suggest adding a bar to weld a receiver into so you can remove the basket if desired. some rubber feet would keep it from rattling on the trail

Great idea. Bitchin rigs are cool to see, but purpose built things like that basket on rigs are what really makes them enjoyable to take on the trails.

I’ve been in this dilemma for a while for my YJ. I have my 33” spare right where yours is. I’ve been thinking of a quick release system to allow me to remove it easily also. I like your design, it works and is solid. I also don’t want to drill into my tub.

I like the trailer hitch basket idea, I've been looking for something to use on the tube back of my jeep, that's not heavy and can hold stuff when there is a passenger in the back. A C-j5 can be a bit cramped in side especially if you just have stuff for a day trip.

Love watching your videos. I always learn SOMETHING. Why didn't you cut the hitch tube, braces off the bottom? You would have gained another 2", or so, under the basket.

Hey Fred have you seen those TorkStrap? Their marketing makes them look like great ideas. I’m curious to how well they’d fair with someone who would really put them to the test with the wheeling you do

Have you ever thought about recessing the floor to bring center of gravity down when loaded up with all the gear? I know from ded you always try to keep cg low and go with minimum lift necessary for tires. would need to install drain plugs for any water collected.

What mirror do you have on this Jeep? I have been looking for a non-convex mirror that mounts to the cage for a long time.

Great little project. Now you'll have to start making and marketing them. Maybe you could make a million dollars selling them to the jeep community
