Hey Fred, so the argument about what gear oil to use comes from the differences between GL-4 and GL-5 grade oils. Apparently the GL-5 which is what almost all gear lube is rated at now, is corrosive to the old brass synchros in the older transmission/t-cases. Apparently since GL-5 sticks to the gears better it can strip the outer coating leading to faster synchro wear. So, many people recommend getting GL-4 since it doesn't have those same corrosive properties. I do know NAPA auto parts usually carries it. However for 99% of people it probably does not matter what gear lube you use as these old jeeps usually aren't driven tens of thousands of miles a year.

Yes GL 4 should be used. Won't hurt brass parts. I love my flat fender. But I also have a 2020 Rubicon. There all great in there own way. Keep the videos coming

I've rebuilt nearly 100 manual transmissions. Everything from a model to t56. I have never seen corroded syncros. I do drag race with a ford toploader. I will say there is a noticeable difference in GL4 and GL5 in shifting. The GL4 isn't as slick as the GL5 and let's the syncro do its job better and shifting is much faster.

Helpful hint. Put the seat covers in the dryer, for just a few minutes. Same trick I use for recovering chairs with "pleather".

Some modern gear lubes may have a corrosive effect on yellow metals. GL 1 is pretty much guaranteed safe, Stay Lube products generally also ok. Probably worth playing safe with a fresh rebuild. This Jeep, not so much.

GL-1 Mineral oil was first used (still available) through GL-4. These are most recommended.

Interesting colour choice for the seat covers, though I am just really not impressed with the fit or finish. Had the PRP ones. Ended up returning. Quality was just not there. I have the carharrtt ones, and they are a far better fit and finish, and incredibly durable.

The manual from that era probably calls for whale oil or something. 😂 I agree with you, any sort of oil is better than the rusty water that you removed.

Additives in GL5 gear oil will break down the soft metals in the trans/transfer case. GL4 that is not also rated for GL5 is probably the best to run. I run NAPA GL-1 90w in my '59 CJ5, since my local NAPA carries it.

You might want to double-check the direction of the seat airbags. I think you may have had it correct the first time. I think they pop towards the outside. I haven't seen any that pop toward the inside. Though I'm not a jeep owner. If the cover is on backwards, that could be bad in a crash. Just a heads up.
