I REALLY like that you explain why turbo charging an engine can be hazardous. I can't tell you how many people I've met who are saying "I'm gonna put in this BIG ASS turbo and my car will be going like a wind" to which I just respond, "Yes... for about a week"

The old 1hz engine, slow they call it, old technology they call it, but when your actually 4wding and things are getting a bit hairy and you hear it humming at 3000rpm, you know you have nothing to fear. No other engine has evoked such confidence in me.

These videos on the HZJ78 Troopie and the comparison with the Defender have been enormously helpful for me as a newcomer tot the overlanding community. One thing that strikes me however, and please do correct me if I'm wrong, it looks like your Troopie is configured for generally warm en good weather conditions. Like you mostly find in South Africa. While the slim/high sized drawers of the drawer system look very efficient, it may not be so practical in cold, rainy climates like on Iceland, Scotland, North Cape, or many countries in Latin America. In those conditions, we would like to be able to access the cabinets from the inside, without having to open the back doors. This is also why an excellent roof top tent like the James Baroud, that is configured for bad weather (with even an extra insulation set available), after long considerations, is not for us. In bad weather conditions, we need the interior space of a flip roof (head room). And during freezing cold or rain, it is no joy to have to climb down a ladder in the middle of the night, acces the car from the back with wet and muddy shoes, to visit the 'potti'. We have experience with the German flip roof used by VW for its campers. We will try the Alu Cab version for our Troopie, although the weight (95 kg??) does worry me a bit. Looking forward to that. It looks like our challenge will be to develop the ultimate Troopie for bad weather / cold / extreme temperatures. That's another challenge. I have one other question about the low pressure turbo. Can that be retro fitted to a used car? Ours will have 130.000 km of history, can we expect problems because of that?

I live in southern California and wish we could get this model Land Cruiser in the US but great video dude I love what you said about the BFG's and how certain magazines test their tyre's opposed to real world testing. I own 2 Tacoma's and one of them has the same tyre's as your Cruiser and just as you said nothing beats the BFG's hands down the best. Once again great video you just earned a new subscriber.

I've see many, many turbos fitted to the 1HZ, and many, if not most turbos with inter-coolers have overheating problems caused by the installation. It does add a bit of power, but it affects the reliability, so I decided no inter-cooler, especially not a water-charged one, they are too complex. Inter-coolers don't keep the engine cooler - if anything, they make it run hotter, especially at low speeds in thick sand and off-road.

Andrew : The very reason that seldom users of a winch need the best, eg Warn is because cheap ones corrode or fill up with water or fail. So the time you do need a winch it won't work. In the long run, you'll experience what I am talking about. Everyone goes back to US made Warn. To explain a little deeper : Not using your winch is the worst thing you can do. If you have a cheap winch, test it by simply pulling your car 30m with it once a month. You think that's too often ? Try using a winch that's failed.....

What an awesome Toyota. I was SO gutted to leave my HZJ75 behind in Australia, but I'll have my 1KZ-TE swapped 2nd Gen Hilux Surf on the road here in a few months. Still, I'd KILL to have a pop-top Troupy. Aside from the G-Wagen, NOTHING is as great for an Expo rig as a 70-series Cruiser. Period, end of story. Sadly they don;t think the US wants or would need these trucks and they flat WRONG. Ship it over and I'll show you the outdoor paradise that is the Pacific NW.

Your 4x4 landcruiser conversion turned out to be a success in every degree according to the design you strategically planned. That idea was a great move forward. Now that you have proved the cynics wrong, might you not look at remodelling the iconic structure known as an Igloo. The reason why I want you to think about a new though warmer and safer design, will be in the interests of the #SpiritOfMawson expedition in the Antartic and for other interested parties exploring other colder regions. First, the structure must be made as lightweight, and waterproofed. It must be capable of being dislodged in icy caverns and unsafe areas as it will act as a temporary safe house, until Search and Rescue can reach it. The Interior must be made to house at least four people, or at least two. It must have external solar powerered panels, built with thermal tubing, in which heating rods can both store the required heating charge, releasing sufficent amounts to warm the rods, which will melt outside ice build-ups around the panels. I would suggest Internally, four single bed bunks ("collapsable & detatchable") meaning they can be co-joined together to form two snow sleds for an emergency run. The Igloo's external structure must be reinforced to be strong enough to withstand a polar bear attack. I suggest #kevlar material provided by DuPont. These are my thoughts for an icy #future which may help expiditions in the Artic.

I no 4x4 dreams but i am looking at campers/trailers for long trips, I cant understand why you didnt just have a permanently wired rigid solar panel on the tent roof. saves having to store it/find it/connect it up. I do like the centre armrest fridge, i built one of those for my big car some ten years ago, great for keeping a cold drink cold on a long drive.

Another interesting video. I have 2 questions though. 1. What is your opinion of Yokohama Geloander ATs if you have used them, as all terrain tires for 16" rims? and 2. I assume you are around 5'7" and hence that roof drawer doesn't obstruct your view of the road, but it still feels like it gives a claustrophobic feeling when installed. What is your take? Also, since it doesn't have a lid, isn't it tricky to hold loose objects?

Oh and I won;t run anything but BFG either... Just about to go to the KM2 MT's as well but I've had BFG AT's on all my Hiluxes (currently running 33x10.50x15's on my 1st gen Surf and even though we have WAY more muddy tracks here in the PNW they still grip up, drive very well and I've never staked a tire out in the bush. I'm interested in trying the 255/85/16 Maxis Bighorns, but I'm reluctant to go away from BFG's so I think that either 33x10.5x15's or 255/85/16 KM2's.

I once saw a Nissan Patrol engine. It broke at about 190 000 kms. The engine oil had never been changed. You should have seen the state of that motor!!! Horrific! The sludge had blocked the old system and the lube system failed. Anyone who tells you that the engine oil is better left unchanged knows nothing about how oil does its job.

you're very inspiring sir, I am determined to buy a 4x4 vehicle soon just by looking at your channel! I live in the United Arab Emirates, its a small beautiful terrain country with mountain ranges, deep deserts, rivers, fresh water springs, not as vast as Africa but certainly exotic in smaller scale my budget allows me to buy a small SUV and I want a vehicle which is not just a regular AWD but a pure 4x4 having 2H, 4H lock and 4L locks, and Only Grand Vitara is option, is it a good vehicle sir?

Interesting video but I'm not so sure the tent idea is what I would have done. You appear to have cut away the complete roof assembly and replaced it with a lift up panel and tent roof, surely this has effected the structural integrity and roll over crash protection of the vehicle? I know in Europe panel type vans that are cheaply converted to motor-vans by adding skylights and without adding additional structural bracing can suffer from lots more scuttle shake and have significantly less strenght in roll over protection.

Great clip, correction on your BFG rating though, they came second last not middle and yet were the most expensive. Besides I wanted BFG KM2 muds on my car but saw way too many ripped to pieces. BFG AT are NOT BFG Muds. Every brand makes good and bad tyres. The KM2's definitely don't like repeated bashing, not sure if yours are KM2s. Thanks for the sneaky teasers about your ideas ;). Thanks for also finally confirming bullbars not being equal. What is your tyre profile btw?
