YES! Cheap for the begginer overlander who doesn't want to dump a truckload of money on a rig! THIS RIGHT HERE is what helps people get into overlanding and keeps them enjoying it. It's not about the gear, it's about the trip, the places and how you enjoy them. And they can always move on to invest some more on a better rig/gear.

That's why I purchased my 80 series. Completely stock standard, 95 gxl, 1hdft engine. One owner, a retired pilot who ran his own small airline and maintained his vehicle like his aeroplanes. Every receipt since the bill of sale kept in a folder. 180,000km on the odometer. A bit of a unicorn. I paid $20,000 (Australia) in 2016. Love the work Andrew. I've passed this on to a young backpacker lady I towed (I'm a tow truck driver) who was planning on an Xtrail for touring Australia.

There's a work table in that storage system if you were to cut the drawer down 20mm shorter of the top and put a piece of ply on top half the length of the drawer with sides that just over hang the sides of the drawer you can pull the drawer out with a top/work table on it then slide the top back in if needing access to drawer ,works a treat and gives you a coffee prep space .

(It belonged to my mates mum) paid 6,000 for it no mods at all with an original prado alloy bull bar. The motor runs like a dream and Im told it was never even put into 4wd. It has two standard tanks with both fuel pumps working and does not leak one bit of oil. Great channel btw sir! new subscriber here :)

T30 X-trails are great fun to drive and tour in, takes a 35mm lift and tows an off road camper with ease. We have owned ours for 7 years without any mechanical issues at all, has never missed a beat. It did 6 weeks touring all over Tasmania pulling an 1050kg loaded camper without complaints, just a great fun under rated vehicle, add in a throttle controller and it makes the ultimate go kart.

It's fine to make your own drawer systems, but the moment you're thinking about bolting a fridge on top of it you'll need to do more than just screw the ply lid on top of the box because in case of an accident or rollover it could very well tear the lid right off the box. Aluminum angle around the edges screwed through the top and sides and reinforcement plates through where the fridge is bolted is the go.

Hello, here are a few tips for Kate: -coffee machine: Staresso hiking coffee machine - PeruSian rug: take a Rellow one, they’re the best color. Regarding the fridge, I’m surprised Andrew is stirring you towards all this gear. If it’s for a ‘backpacker/weekend/short trips’ budget overlander thing, you don’t need it? Chances are you’ll always stay close to shops and not spend more than 5 days away from one so a simple coolbox or electric one that runs during the day will be sufficient. Andrew, remember what you said in one of your videos: always ask the bikers for advice as they don’t have any space. I’ve been around the world with my motorcycle including Australia with 80L of volume/space and had all tent/camping/cooking /coffee machine gear, plus tools/spare parts, electronics, clothes... the whole lot! It’s good to see you guys going in Andrew’s steps but remember : in the 70s in Africa, all he had was a simple box at the back and Gwynn at the front. And he survived ! Happy travels!

My favourite KZbin videos are of your Canning Stock Route adventure. Something that has been, since watching it, at the top of my bucket list. Finances dictated that I do a few road trips in a 1990 Mazda 626 since you inspired me, so obviously no off-roading. My wife and I looked on forlornly at Cape Tribulation watching 4x4s cross a steady flowing creek, enough to drown our 626. But we loved what you do but could never afford 50k or more on a proper 4x4. This video was exactly what I needed - thank you. In a couple of years we will get that “cheaper” 4x4 and do the CSR.

Great choice. I remove the back seats of my Wrangler for any trip longer than a weekend. Weight saving is close to 50kg and it opens up a lot of space. It takes me about 30 minutes to take out. It helps to keep the weight down low and between the wheels. My Fridge, battery and water goes where the seats used to be. To help with the weight, get a pair of airbags for the rear suspension. Because your car is a daily driver, you can inflate and deflate the airbags as you want and they are cheap and easy to install. Mine is 2 years old and has done a few trips in Namaqualand and the northern Wes Coast of South Africa and are still working fine. Andrew, you know these roads and the "sinkplaat"(corrugations). Looking forward to see X Trail trips.

X trail is good, but I will think you overlooked the absolute best one...Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.4. Its permanent 4wd, and has a low range transfer case. I also believe-to go overlanding on a low budget with a fridge and drawers with chairs etc...RV3 OZ tent that they can store on normal roof bars is the answer. An suv is not ideal to sleep in for two
@J-P883 жыл бұрын
Double the Cost to buy a Suzuki with Same Kilometres, they will probably do the complete Build for the cost of buy the Suzuki Standard also the X Trail is slight wider and has rpughly an extra 130kgs Pay Load, 550kgs to the Zooks 420 odd, they wont be planning on doing 4wding, just normally Touring most likely and 4H is all thats needed, 4low is for proper 4wding, and they are doing it on a Budget, roof top tent even a Kings will cost a good $800. Ill bet they will do the complete build for less then a Suzukis $14000 price tag on Car sales

I'm over 6 feet tall and can sleep like a baby inside my 1st gen 5dr RAV4. I removed the rear seats, and I place an old IKEA futon-chair mattress flat across a couple of plastic storage bins, with the front passenger seat leaned forward. It takes < 5 min to set up; it's much easier than pitching a tent, I'm completely protected from weather, and I can use the heater, A/C, or radio as I please. The big downside is that I need to store a few items (like my cooler) outside the vehicle to make space while I'm sleeping, but this takes only minutes to rearrange. For a budget build and/or a small vehicle, I'd skip the fixed "storage rack" altogether, and just use plastic bins for more flexibility. Once a rack is installed, there's no way to temporarily recover the space for utility purposes.

This is sort of what I've done, same concept but different vehicle type. I mostly travel & camp around the northern section of the Golden Triangle in central Victoria. I used what I already had, a 1994 VR Berlina wagon, removed the back seat & replacing it with a false floor. Under this false floor I have my water (3x10 litre drums), Aux battery (135aH deep cycle), pots & pans, spare tent poles which are not used for a tent, aluminium slat table and other bits & bobs. On top of the floor resides my fridge behind the passenger seat, an older large esky for my tuckerbox behind the drivers seat, whatever sleeping accommodation I'm using that weekend - be it the Oxley 5 tent, swag or stretcher tent, camp stove & gas bottle, two 45 litre backpacks with various items inside and a 200 watt solar blanket. Have been using this as above for about 6 years now & it suits what I do & where I go. I've only been temporarily stuck a couple of times, & got myself out of trouble with no outside help both times. I know the limits of the vehicle & don't try to push my luck, but can still travel around about 95% of the Triangle even if mildly wet with no worries.

Lightweight (1,5tn) front and rear solid axles, 15' wheels, factory rear LSD, proper 4X4 with low range, unlimited aftermarket modifications, not too thirsty and overall a rather solid reliable vehicle making it cheap to run. Also a future classic if not already.

Knowing that this is a budget build, I know you won't be buying any Lithium. As an owner of a 2006 model, I can tell you, that you can fit an 80AH AGM under each front seat. Watching people spend a motza or spruik high cost supplied gear to drag their worldly belongings around with them was starting to wear very thin. Fine choice, I regularly see them in unexpected places :) Another option would be the Suzuki XL7, the lesser known 7-seat Grant Vitara made until around 2006. With the third row removed you have a very large boot space. A little older and thirstier than the XTrail, but gains body-on-frame construction and a low-range transfer case. Having driven an X-trail for 15 years, I can tell you its a very good car to start with. Espacialy if you're going to use it also as a daily driver. They are much more capable than most people think. But they seem to be still expensive in Australia. I sold my last one in februari 2020 for 2500€. Car was in perfect shape, building year 2005 with 140.000 km. In Europe the emission regulations make them lose all value. It was my second X-trail having a total loss with my first one in 2012 at 230.000 km. Other than servicing costs, I have never had any failure on neither one of the cars. Very reliable.
