When you say that wide tyres don’t have any advantage, do you mean for overlanding? For overlanding in Australia? I guess they have advantages on certain terrains, like sand or snow. Don’t they? I’ve arrived from three weeks in Iceland and I was totally shocked by the absolutely massive tyres A LOT of 4x4s have over there. I suppose that might be somehow justified and that it is not only a trend. What do you have to say? Thanks!
@Digital_Dairy3 жыл бұрын
I've noticed that folks that don't want to chop out their fender wells and the like or go for big lifts like narrower tires. Skinnier tires can be taller and still tuck up inside your fenders when you're flexing. Aired down, a skinnier taller tire will actually still have a larger footprint than a wider, shorter tire. They have less rolling resistance, more downward bite, they steer better in the front at least. Even most mud boggers I know like the narrow stuff, but when you get into man-made mudholes, or the snow in Iceland, your skinny tire will probably sink up to your axles or over the hood of your car before you reach the actual ground. Skinny's also take up less room and weigh less. I think wide tires are popular because so many people run aggressive, wide mud tires on their full size trucks and they will be drive on pavement whereas narrow tire feels a little more squirmy. I find that the normal width wide tires seen almost trucks spin out less easily on pavement and feel more stable
@gumundurpetur91143 жыл бұрын
Here in Iceland we have the same dilemma. Over all hight is always king to float on snow but then you have arguements that skinny tires work better on light jeeps with litte power and wide for the others. But most agree and talk about how high tires they choose. F.x. for long highland or glacier trips 38 inch is standard on light pickups, 44-46 inches on medium size jeeps and 54 inches for the heavy american trucks. But with tires like that we can let them down to even 1 psi and then the jeeps footprint on the snow will get lighter then a humans.

When you have a GVM upgrade on a 79 series the GVM on the standard tyres are not legally rated for that weight upgrade. I enquired after the fact back to my suspension upgrade store, and they researched it and found this to be correct. The choice of wheels and tyres also plays a big part when it comes to vehicle weight. What about 15" rims, would they fit? Less alloy and more rubber. It also opens up the door to 33x12.50r15, which is everywhere, or 33x10.50r15, which is roughly the same size as a 255/85r16. It would also allow you to run a 15x7" rim with the 33x.10.50r15 tyre, which would make for a very light combo. 7" wide rims would also make the tyre bulge a lot more. Also, a more basic rim design with no fake beadlock could probably shave some weight. With all this in mind, and after a little bit of research: Example similar to current setup: 16x8" Method Race wheel with fake beadlock- 11.56Kg. 255/85r16 Bfg Km3 - 26.76Kg. Weight of 1 wheel - 38.32Kg. Weight of 5 wheels- 191.6Kg. Weight of 6 wheels - 228.62Kg. A lighter 15" example: 15x7" American Racing AR23 - 7.71Kg. 33x10.50r15 Bfg Km3 - 25.71 Kg. Weight of 1 wheel - 33.42Kg. Weight of 6 wheels - 200.52Kg. That's 5Kg/wheel savings, 20Kg of unsprung weight .You can almost run 6 15" wheels for the weight of 5 16" wheels.

Best of luck with the Vapours. I have them on my 200 series, they look great but they do tend to hold mud/sand on the groove around outside of the wheel. They go out of balance very quickly

Andrew, I was thinking about your tyre size choice. I’m running the same size, 265/75/16 on a dmax. When you go 255/85/16 with 2 spares, What is the odds of having to replace these tyres when you out in the bush? If you really have to get to that point of emergency, just put 2 x 265/75/16 on to get you back home. Then you can sell those 2 tyres on social media, and get the 255’s again. Just a thought… The 33” will look nicer on a troopy when you lift it

about tyre shape, you mean that the best shape is obtained by getting the nearest match rim width/tyre width ? in this way is going to be more of a square?

I know many would disagree, and I do understand the benefit of a lighter alloy rim, but i really liked the steel rims, i think with that shape body, they look best. Its weird, for a long time I always preferred the look of alloys, but now, steel rims get my attention first. Thanks for the content Andrew.

I looked for a while for something tall and skinny for my Disco2 .. I ended up with Dick Cepek Extremes 255/85r16s and I only have 1 spare. My idea was to get a camper and put the same wheels on that and then I could have 2 extra spares. Some other options I found were the BFG KO2 33/10.5r15 (couldnt find a 15x8 in 5x120 and the correct offset) and the Kenda A/T in 35/10.5r17 and 33/10.5r17 (I had already got 16inch wheels when I found these sizes). Another thing I have is some big patches for mining truck tyres , which if I had to, I could bust a bead and put it in the inside over a puncture (if I had to). I think the biggest one I got would be similar size to a desert bowl

I can't argue with your choices there. I run 265/75 R16 on GXL rims on my single-cab 79-series with 3900 GVM to carry my slide-on camper. These performed very well during our double crossing of Simpson Desert (Hay River Track and Madigan Line) in 2019. For 20 years I've been very happy with BFG AT tyres, but I'd like to try another set of MT tyres. Looking forward to your reports on the performance of the Falken MT tyres.

The overall look of the troopy is very nice mate. Rims are tough looking. If you put a 2nd spare on the roof, where are you sleeping? Intriguing.
@niebelangrik33583 жыл бұрын
He might still fit a Hercules or similar roof conversion kit. As long as the load is relatively small and towards the front of the vehicle it should be fine to lift. As close to the hinge as possible. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

A point to remember with wheels on the roof is the difficulty of getting them up and down. Okay for most young blokes, but as you get older you risk injury and out in the bush is not a good place to hurt yourself.

I ran into a similar issue with wide tires on my Tacoma. If I go wide, even with SPC upper control arms with caster all the way forward, I have to start cutting. If I keep the 10.5" width which is stock for the Tacoma or go narrower I'm a bit better off with 33s. Here are a few options I wrote down for later reference as most of these are on the narrow side of things. BGF KO2 235/85 R16 (SKINNY) BFG KO2 255/75R17 (32" x 10") BFG KO2 LT 34X10.50R17 (33.5" x 10.6) Cooper Discovery S/T Maxx 255/85R16 (32.8" x 10.2") Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx 255/80R17 (32.8" x 10.2") KM3 255/85 R16 (33.1" x 10")

Damn, that's nice Andrew.👍 My Dad had Falkien Wildpeaks All weather 3 peak snow rated ATs on his last Dodge Truck and we were really impressed by them. Unlike the KO2s I put on my truck. Those tires don't deserve their snow rating and IMO are dangerous on wet pavement. I've had them get squirrely on wet curves never mind how terrifying they could get on ice. They were just fine in the snow though but ice is the issue in winter, not snow. I put Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S 285/65r17 truck tire on my truck and quit like them. Yes, not a mud AT but I have to deal with ice and snow and so the tires have to have snipes/swipes? Anyway, I'll never put an MT on my truck again. These are fantastic all-weather off-road tires for where I live. Not as strong off-road as KO2s but not terrifying to drive in the wet or on ice either. In fact, I'd say only a dedicated snow tire would be better and not by a lot and these are fantastic year-round. The All-weather technology is fantastic. 100K KM tread warranty with non of the dangers of snow tires in milder months. Note, I'm not hitting hard off-road trails (especially alone) anymore due to my paralyzed leg so any issues due to needing MTs is not that much of a factor anymore Also, I watched all the Duster Trails videos of them testing these tires. Easily convinced me to dump the awful KO2s (which they tested against) and considered All-weather tires like these or the Toyo Open country AT2s or Falkien Wildpeaks. Their terrain is similar to what I usually drive in and they made good points about how to offroad with them. Note I was siding to the Toyo's but availability and cost drove me to try the Coopers. I'd have to drive to another city for the Toyos and they were almost twice the cost. I could have eaten the cost but I wanted tires from a local dealer in case I had issues. With the Falkiens it was the weight. I have to do a lot of long-distance driving in Saskatchewan and my truck is my everyday driver. I talked to the installer of my tires and I wasn't ready for that kind of hit on my mpg. Not with today's gas prices. Haven't gotten a puncture in 2 years through sloppy fields and river trails so I'm ok with the Coopers. They've come a long way in 20 years.

Good episode - glad to see your new build and excited to see what you do to save weight! Question 4U: So if you went with a 32” tire, why didn’t you go 235/85R16, which is also very common, and also a skinny? You could have run a 16x7” rim and done the 235/85 or bumped up an inch to the 255/85. I feel like the 265 is on cusp of being too fat. IMO, the rims you chose seem too SoCal to me - I personally would have gone with either a D-window steely or an 8- or 10-hole aluminum rim. But with bar work, decals, and some dirt, the wheels will probably grow on me. Looking forward to your next build video - thanks!

After about 450000km outback in 70 series LandCruisers with various tyre sizes from 31's to 35's, the 255/85r16 on a 7" rim, is the best for a 70 series. I used to carry two spares, now I carry one and sometimes a carcass. I've fixed many punctures, just none of my own.
@LuaiADV3 жыл бұрын
I had hoped you did the pizza cutters 255/85R16. When was the last time you had 2 punctures on the same trip?
@j36523 жыл бұрын
I suppose the argument for two spares isn't, how often do you get two punctures, but how often do you get one. The logic being, if you have one spare, and you get a puncture, you sort of need to head back, or to a tyre place. You wouldn't set off without a spare, so don't continue without one. So the second spare just means you can have a puncture without it ruining your trip. If you need the second spare, you might need a different set of tyres for the surface you're on.

Even bigger question, last time he had two punctures not repareable with plugs.

I had 16 x 8 with 285, now I have the stock 79 series non split rim skinnies on my 76 series, but before we go on our trip, I'll be using my current 16x6 steel wheels with the Toyo 255 85 16. It's the goldilocks of tyres. I'll carry two spares on big trips, plus a trailer with same tyres and a one spare on the trailer. It's already been said, but if you influencers started using the 255, maybe they'd be easier to get?
@johntanchong31663 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with you, while watching the video I am really hoping he will choose the 255/85R16 because I know this is the perfect size for off road and Andrew will influence a lot of people to look for this size hence tyre dealers will have the confidence of stocking them and eventually tyre manufacturers will increase production of this size.
@philg24683 жыл бұрын
Steven, the approved rim size for your Toyo 255/85 are 6.5" up to 8", so your current 6" rims are too skinny. You can get 105 series 6.5" rims which will take the 255 perfectly.
@Keithygeorge3 жыл бұрын

Great video! I’m in the process of changing tires on my 5th Gen 4Runner. Decided to go with Falken Wildpeak AT3W 255/80/17 from the stock size on a 2” lift (2”on rear and 2.25” on front). Came from a D110 with 235/85’s and they were fantastic off-road so looking forward to these new tires on the Toyota. Overall weight being added was a big factor in my decision making process.
