There are some vehicles up for sale with very low milage from the British Forces in Germany. Nifty. I enjoy your videos, and I don't want to impinge on what might be some aspect of your business model. But has it occurred to you that you keep building vehicles of roughly the same size and shape from a very few manufacturers? And that each time the platform limits seem to push you off in quest of a better setup? Your recent videos in North America show a need for better climate protection than seems reasonable in a mid sized boxy wagon, and you recently commented that you need more room to do video work on an extended trip. I think you were on the right track when looking at something maybe larger and less refined. I remain curious as to your final decision.
@takayama16385 жыл бұрын
Andrew Fournier, yes, I think that's true. One thing I've learned from Andrew's channel is that it's not so easy to find the best platform for overlanding. One good choice then becomes a compromise in some area. E.g., weight. And, like you said, in North America we have bitter cold to contend with, and scorching heat.

Yet I hope the G will be in your next project as with your experience you probably going to build on that chassis an extraordinary overlanding machine - fingers cross for G-wagen!

I had a G wagon, with the skinny steel wheels, wind up windows, auto box, on a farm in the UK. But short wheel base. It was the most capable off road vehicle I have ever been in. It replaced a Land Rover 88, as the LR could not live with it. Being an auto, with little power on a farm, the labourers treated the throttle as a switch. On = flat out off = idle. When I left the farm (for sunny South Africa), it had done 500,000 miles. Never really serviced it; once a year I would feel guilty and drain the black sludge out of the engine, and refill it with tractor engine oil...then forget about it for another year!! Stunning. I have owned Toyotas, LandRovers, Range Rovers, but nothing came close to that G Wagon. I concur; simply the best.

You just got me thinking.... May need to built another camper on a G. We are currently driving a 2001 Sprinter 311 4X4 Doka with a light weight composite camper body. The reason we choose this platform was the simplicity and robustness. Our truck is sharing many parts (rear axle, diff locks...) with the G. It come from the factory with steel rims and skinny tires. As you said, it's amazing how far you get with those! Another and probably biggest reason to buy a Mercedes is the availability of spare part around the world. All you need is your chassis number and a dealer ship. In any case, thank you very much for your inside thoughts about the G.

First time I drove one of these (note I do own a Pinzgauer 710K diesel) was 1982 I had been driving British Army LWB FFR Landrovers......I was astounded, it was a G230 previously being owned by the Argentine Army.....The ride was super, off road the difflocks made a big difference to where I could go. Some great tracks around Port Stanley, so long as you weren't bothered too much about Land Mines..... Of course I was a young 23 yr old soldier (immortal as we all are at that age) and I noticed how much Petrol this G Wagen consumed, but in truth it was only because I could push it more than a Landrover, that is was less economical.......My ideal G would be a diesel.....but An early diesel.Fast Forward to 2019..and of course in Europe they have all been restored and cost the earth..here in Poland for the same price I could buy a G Wagen to the same spec as my wife's 2017 Rubicon unlimited.......I would have to settle for a 100,00kms 3-4 yr old G wagen.

The big Magna Steyr (manufacturer of the G) parking lot for the new Gs is less than 1km away from my home and I had an old Station Wagon (5Zyl Diesel without Turbo) as my daily duty car, when I was stationed 12 months as a peacekeeper in Kosovo 2015-16. The 20 year old Gs of the AUT army get beaten up by bad roads, get rusty, are patched up again etc, but they are more reliable and overall better (except the lack of HP of the naturally aspirated Diesel) than the Mitsubishi L200s who followed them. Constant problems with 5 year old cars... I also would love to own a G Professional, but the used prices are hardcore and one expensive vehicle (VW T6 California Beach) is enough for our household. Well earned Insights and wisdom from down under. Good on you, Andrew. RE: 461 vs. 463. I wince a bit when I hear "totally different cars". Please forgive my literalness. For folks contemplating the start of a G-love journey, It's often easier/cheaper to discard all the luxury trappings you don't need when outfitting, than to add the few that you DO need when the car doesn't have them. A/C comes to mind, or heated seats. My SoCal method is this: Buy cheap beater 463 G500 that has never been beyond the curb. They're way more common and lower miles than 461s.These have 3 electric lockers, big brakes, aluminum V8s, etc. Strip and sell all the unwanted tart parts - mostly interior, for comical money. Then buy 16" beadlocks, proper tires, good dampers, cage, fuel cell, protection for oil cooler, rattle-can camo the body to hide all the . . everything, then drive it like you stole it to the nearest mud hole or rock pile. I have two, a 2000 and a 2002. They look like hell and I'd love a Blutec , but maaan, the V8s get it when hooning. Ugly can be so beautiful . . and cheap. They're brilliant!! Still longing to find a cheap and unloved Mog though . . Cheers from Anza-Borrego Ca.

On the 80 they were always electronically actuated. Land Cruiser 70 first had cable lockers (coming over from the 60) and later had electric lockers. No idea when electronic front and rear lockers on 70 series started but by 1990 they were widely available on European 70's. Cheers

When we do have snow or I deside to drive on a we lawn, then my subaru impreza does just fine. I used to drive these G-wagons in the army, and we trashed these cars pretty hard in any situation in the terrain, we NEVER had a brakedown or any other failures at all.. what this vehicle can do offroad is just amazing.. @4xoverland I am a small collector of 90s cars, currently I have got an E38 7 series, W210 mercedes E class, and an Audi Allroad (1st gen), all of which I use as daily commute to the office, cocktail reception in the evenings (before Covid stikes), etc. They are all practical classics. The allroad is my go-to car during the rainy seasons especially. I am recently thinking to replace the Allroad to either a Landcruiser 80 Std (with the steel rims and barndoors), or a late 80s 280GE, or if I can get one, an early 2000s 290GD (quite rare in my country as they are primarily only imported as presidential escort cars). Which is a better choice? the 80 Landcruiser Std or a Diesel 290GD? Either way it must be with the narrow steel rims for both cars as I love the utilitarian look of them. I want something that is classic and eternal, as I rarely change/buy new cars. The BMW 7 and the E-class is a permanent fixture in my collection (i intend to use them until perhaps decades later when petrol cars might be banned)

Best as always. I think Id go for HZJ 76. Troopy is great too but being real, I will never do a proper "around the globe" trip. So 76 for me. Currently owning Hilux, Prado and Wrangler.

Sure would be nice to do the Pan-American in a G-Wagen camper... ;)

We used to have these in the army. Extremely sturdy vehicles. They were called ‘Puch’. Austrian made if I recall correctly. Also had Unimogs. If anyone wants to see what wheel articulation can be like, look at an Unimog. Amazing. Cool memories inboth senses of the word. This said, I don’t really feel the emotional connection with these as I do with land rovers. I don’t know why but they seem to have a soul that is lacking from germanic or asian vehicles that are more like tools. And that’s a big part of a vehicle for me. Great video as always!

Here you would need a different permit to drive something over 3500 kg. If going that way, why not a Unimog ?

the other aspect of the Canning Stock Route debacle when they destroyed the equivalent of Australia's spare stock of G-Wagen shock absorbers was that they were running to a pretty tight schedule and it was all about catering for a bunch of european motoring journalists who subsequently hammered the cars.... 'because G-Wagen'.... That was my understanding of it.

Something in my heart dies whenever I hear Andrew talk trash about the W463. Tears come to my eyes.

Oh, come on. The W463 has become a mall-cruiser, a rapper's car, bling and revolting. I have a love hate relationship with the 463. They took a spectacularly good machine and ruined it. But I have to say, not as badly as they ruined the Range Rover.

I can understand, me my self i was looking one for longtime. And i found one Burundi, in a good looking couler. For 3000 us dollars. Which is a good price. But the engine is not good. So i have to buy another engine.

Only slightly cheaper than the iveco. I know which one I would be going for... you would get use to the climb into the cockpit.. after a few weeks you wouldn't even notice it.
