I’m looking at a 2005 with 120k miles to replace my 2004 GX470 as my daily driver. Lexus has 322k miles on it and is still like new but I’m in the mood for another Mercedes-Benz. I’ve had about 10 of em and wish I hadn’t sold a few of them…especially my 2006 E500 4Matic and my 1990 300SEL.

My theory on why cars with soul and personality garner hate from others is that people aren’t necessarily mad at you or mad about the car…they are more mad that they played it safe and acquired the safe car they’re in while recognizing someone who is living a picture of the life they want or wanted for themselves. Saw similar behavior towards my friend who had a H2 Hummer back in 2007. It was impractical as hell…no where close to being a daily driver, but it was always awesome and cool. Never safe. Never dull.

I remember the first time I saw a G-Wagon about 13 years ago thinking to myself man, I really want one. I might’ve just been a kid at the time, but I wanted one. I still do, but it would have to be a pre-2019. The new styling just doesn’t do it for me on top of it gaining a “look at me” reputation gained from TV shows, social media, etc. rather than it being a civilized military truck.

What's kind of funny is it was never on my list until I stumbled upon the one in this video. It was my neighbor's and I fell in love with it after seeing it in person so often. Okay you guys in the comments are my type of people so I need your help. I want an older style G Wagon because I’m obsessed with the box styled look and a Jeep Wrangler is small to me and I also love the the utilitarian aspect of the G. Have anyone had any major problems with the older models, I seen on a forum to avoid the 09’ version but couldn’t find anything else on other models. I also came across that the G could survive well over 500k in miles which is unbelievable and pretty cool if this is true. Love this review as well.

I got a early Porsche Cayman S a year and a half ago and I expected similar negative attention, but it’s been the exact opposite. First car I’ve owned that doesn’t collect frequent door dings, or that people happily let me merge, constant flow of people wanting to take a picture of it or sit in it. But I’m sad to learn the ride of the G wagon isn’t great because the harshness of the Porsche on terrible roads had me wanting a G Wagon. 😂

Some electrical components have needed replacement (Window switches, modules etc) but nothing ridiculous. I daily drive mine mostly in the winter and live up a 12 mile dirt road in the mountains of Utah. The fit and finish is old school Mercedes tooling which is superb. Seats and paint still look like new. Highly recommended! As for what other people think, I really don't care. If you like it, awesome. If you don't, screw you and your Escalade.

I recently bought a 2003 G Wagen for the purpose of overlanding and traveling. As a lover of canyon driving, this thing is atrocious. All the faults you describe are SO true. AND so are the reactions of others. even though it's a 20 year old vehicle that cost less than a mid spec Camry, Accord, Outback, etc. and half the price of a current top spec Wrangler or Bronco or even Tacoma. I get dirty looks too. It's almost like I want to rattle can it flat earth, put on off road tires a winch and never wash it. Oh, and a roof rack with roof top tent, which is definitely happening. Maybe I'll do a flat earth PPF. Great video.

Find a '98 to '01 Europa version... It's the sweet spot. Interior is well designed with solid materials (wood, leather, 4 seat heaters, but heavy duty plastic). It fits perfectly with the boxy exterior and is just classically beautiful. 2002 MBUSA interior is hideous and has aged terribly. Other than the back cargo door which can be adjusted, there are no real rattles or squeaks on the Europa interior. The HVAC system is manual, so you can do crazy things like have cool fresh air on your face and warm air on your feet in cold weather (Try that with any automated climate control system!) And no dated GPS/Interface screen. Plus Europa wagons have awesome tubular steel grid running boards that look perfect and really serve their purpose in inclement weather (snow or mud falls through the slots); contrast those to the flimsy plastic and chrome ones that MBUSA installed on their 2002+ imports.
