I know this series was not meant to inspire floods of tears, but now that I have mopped them up I have to thank you for it. It has put me in mind of my father, who died in Windhoek in 2012. I hope the journey to organise his funeral there is not my last visit to Africa, but every time I think of going back I'm unsure if I could face the heartbreak of not finding him there. These beautiful scenes and adventures are persuading me to take the chance. With deep gratitude, thanks again.

I worked for a tyre company in RSA for 40 years (sales and technical) which was not Firestone/Bridgestone and stand amazed that a man of your experience can make such a statement about a brand of tyre. One needs to look far further when it comes to tyre performance / issues - just because 2, 3, 4 of your vehicle tyres exhibit the same conditions, doesn’t mean it’s a tyre issue,it could mean it’s a driver / operational issue, which is in fact what happened in this case. Most knowledgeable operators knows that abuse/overload/underinflation/speed/heat causes gradual degradation of rubber bonding with subsequent tyre destruction. In this case there are too many variables at play to blame the tyre brand.

Well, experience in the real world always is the most convincing influencer. Bridgestone 694 dueller was introduced around 2006 ish. I had one of the early sets on my G-wagon, then again in 2008 on my Landcruiser 76. They were good on gravel, better than BF KO2 in mud, but weak and prone to collapse when run hot with a heavy load and prone to sidewall disintegration when running at lower than normal pressures - pressures that similar AT tyres in similar conditions can easily handle. I had several friends who tried them, and every one, without exception regretted it. This experience just reinforced my opinion. Now you can take my real world experience any way you like.

Wonderful African series Andrew. Brings back so many wonderful memories of my time there back in 2002 on a safari truck tour from southern Africa and into East Africa. What a fantastic photo you provided the Lodge! I love your ability to reference (with evidence) previous trips. I can only assume your skills with cataloguing your travels are on par if not better than your attention to detail with your vehicle builds. As a Tyre Fitter with extensive experience changing tyres on Western Australian mines with the brand featured in this episode with complete failure = overpriced garbage!!!!!

Thanks for the efforts Andrew. I second that note on Olifantsrus camp! It is an overlanders camp. One thing I noticed (and I suspect it was only noticed when you returned) was that you internal footage focuses on the inside of the car and blurs the scenery you are describing. I have holder in the centre of the Troopy below the mirror which means it can only focus on the bonnet outside and the view.

great video, and i dont mind old footage already seen before. makes them just more iconic and one gets encouraged to browse the playlist again. a fun thought on tyres. just saw a video recently that explained why african militarys used white wall tyres despite having a camo trim. it pretty much narrowed down to low rubber qualitys and the influence of heat and UV light. seems as if those problems didnt go away with modern tyres.

I would recommend Terrafirma IT'S or Cooper STT's anyway! I've punished my poor vehicle fitted with Terrafirma's mercilessly in Zululand and Eswatini as well as the Drakensberg without a single puncture. Raw virgin bush, potholes Combretum immerse stakes etc. Ragged, sharp potholes and heavy impacts. My humble Mahindra S6 4x4 Karoo has just kept going over terrible terrain for 150000km's with remarkably little drama and great economy. Yes the spare wheel fell off, carrier bearing failed broke all 4 Monroe shock mounts but really not surprised considering what caused them. The only tougher vehicles were Series Landies, a Defender and very arguably, a Mazda B2600i. A Ranger 4x4 was a miserable failure. A Jimmy was good over short trips but really uncomfortable on the long road. It was a miniature Rangie. Brilliant little 4x4. I love my Mahindra, tough as nails, economical and super comfortable with no frills. Love your work and would dearly love to share a campfire or 20 with you.

I know a lot about the 1HZ. Have turbo charged two of the five I've owned. Its risky. Very risky. Most turbos destroy the engine within 30-50 000 kms. EGTs tend to sky rocket and then burn the pistons. When done well, they do provide a small amount of additional power safely but for a quite a high increase in fuel consumption. I will change this engine for a FTE.
