I wish you could have continued with the journey. The lion really gave you a scare. After the lion incident, you came up with so many excuses why you couldn't continue with the journey. I even think the puncture was intetional. I love your shows

I know this is old but it is, in fact, quite a valuable piece to me. Since my wife passed away 18 months ago; I travel alone and am trying to determine whether, at 72, I want to give solo overlanding a go. Thanks!

+Conner Hendrick I'm leaning hard in that direction. I'm considering what vehicle to take. My 2013 4Runner could work but so could a 2008 Land Cruiser I've located. I have a 2016 Tacoma on the way too. The decision will be made in February and then I'll start equipping. Fun!

Stayed at that campsite in Khutse with my teenage son when we did our crossing 10 years ago. We shared it with a spotted hyena who spent the evening probing the boundaries of the camp. It was an awesome crossing in a rented Ford Ranger. One of life's highlights!

hello from america. I own a heavy duty truck and the tires I purchased are the same bf Goodrich all train that you have in later videos. they make a 8 ply tire that I'm required to use on my vehicle and my opinion is they are truly "bullet proof". I enjoy watching your videos keep up the great job.

Can't get enough of this channel, my favorite thing to watch these days. This was an amazing journey. One day I'd love to do something similar. Andrew, I was wondering if you had a specific episode that advised on assessing, and avoiding or dealing with wildlife, particularly dangerous ones?

+Abhi Jain No specific videos, but it is mentioned now and again. The Zambia expedition 16 new videos that will run from April, has quite a bit, as we were surrounded by animals and had to chose camping spots carefully to avoid upsetting the local wildlife.

Tyre failure possibly due to being too soft, the tyre wall flexes too much in that area causing the sidewall to heat up to the point where it de-laminates.

This is why we keep our tyre pressure high when going in the the Bush to save tyres. It's seriously limit our ability drive over sand. Yes we will get stuck more often than others but it will save the tyres :)

Love the videos. Correction. the Tropic of Capricorn is not the middle of the southern hemisphere. It is the furthest south that the sun appears to be at the summer solstice. So on the longest day of the year in summer anywhere along the Tropic of Capricorn the sun will be directly overhead at midday. A vertical stick would leave no shadow at midday. The Tropic of Cancer is the northern hemisphere equivalent. If you stood in the same location in the middle of winter on the shortest day of the year that same stick would cast a shadow pointing directly south as the sun appears to be further north giving the northern hemisphere it's summer. Looking forward to your Canning trip.

I notice you drive long distances over sandy roads. What is your suggested pace over washboard (rippled) track? I'm on a stock 07 Toyota FJ Cruiser suspension. Notes on tire pressure? Thanks for excellent overland travel videos!
@4xoverland
@4xoverland 10 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the frequency and depth of the washboard. Speed it set to reduce the vibration as much as possible, whatever that is. In these conditions I ran the tyres as about 1,6 bar front, 1,8 bar back. Speeds averaged 25 -30 kph on those narrow sand tracks. See episode 2: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqe7gYKwjMysqck

I was totally captivated by your journey this far. So interesting your experience of truly 'solo' travel ( though did you find having the camera and an 'audience' you talked to on film, a sort of softening of the solitude?) Although it must have been pretty damn scary to have realised the close proximity of that lion, it was, I am afraid, quite funny seeing you seriously shocked at that reality! Interesting about the tyre failure and frustrating for you too. Have to say, it looked an amazing trip and the looked brilliantly kitted out too. Thank you for making this film. a.t.b. vee

I fear the same thing would happen with the tires on my LR3 if I air them down a bit... there's Pirelli Scorpion tires on 18 inch stock alloy wheel... I suspect they're stock tires but they didn't know at the dealer... I believe the BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A are only three 3 ply but are they also that all the way up the sidewall?..what other stronger good tires are out there that can match BFGs? Looking at some Hutchinson bead lock wheels but are they totally overkill? anyone know...

The vast majority of four wheel drives in Australia come with 6 ply tyres which can be run at 15 PSI and even lower down to 10 PSI if it really rough ground. Two ply tyers are a NO NO for traversing this big country - Australia My 4x4 is running 31x10.5x 16 using the latest tyre from the USA called the General Grabber A/T . Brilliant tyre and after 70,000 km on it, I`ll make my 85,000 - 90,000 KM before they need replacing. The new ones are currently sitting in my garage behind my workshop bench.

Hi, Andrew. I like it that you are realistic, realy on your own, and that you don't want to make sensational video's to get more viewers! One thing though. I don't want to be a party pooper, but you are going back because you don't have more spare tires and it is too dangerous to risk that long stretch before you. Now I don't have the best eyes in the world anymore, but at 25:15 I clearly see an extra spare on you roof...
@4xoverland
@4xoverland 10 жыл бұрын
Hi. Good comments. I know about the tyre on the roof. Listen again, and I justify why running with just one spare and four other tyres that I no longer trust. Make sure you see part-2.
@DoubleUThings
@DoubleUThings 10 жыл бұрын
4xOverland Okay, I get it. Yes, I heard your comment about the one spare. You meant running with one spare tire LEFT after you busted that one? I thought you were talking about the spare you busted. And I totally agree with you. We also drive around (Argentinia and Chile at the moment) with two spares, and also plugs. You don't wanna get stuck in the middle of sharp unpaved nowhere :-) Keep on filming! I'm gonna watch the rest of the series.

That tyre failure was due to heat. Low pressures + hot day + heavy load = tyre sidewall failure. Usually happens after hours and hours of driving under those conditions. Use a tyre with the heaviest load rating you can get will help with this. We call them "E" rated tyres in the US. Best of luck on belt failures in the future and you know to carry two tyres if going solo. Solo overland is the ultimate test of how much research you've put into your gear. If you have the best everything and spares of the essentials you're generally in decent shape. If you just go out with any old gear, you'll have failures.

21:22 Why would you go back to find out what punctured your tyre? You are putting yourself at the risk of having another one punctured (e.g. if you didn't see the wood again!)! Was it because you were thinking about cancelling the journey?

@4xoverland
@4xoverland 5 жыл бұрын
Australia uses the metric system for everything I can find, with the exception of 4wd enthusiasts who appear to want to stick to psi. I've used bar all my life and I'll continue to use it, and convert to psi in a title (when I remember to).

You said most people who treck across the Kalahari had 6 ply tires. Question is, then why were you doing it with 2 ply tires? I feel like that was a noob mistake. Love your videos.
@4xoverland
@4xoverland 10 жыл бұрын
They were running 6-ply sidewall cross-ply tyres. Indestructible but positively horrible on tarmac. Not an option for any vehicle that spends as much time on tar as in the outback. That's why in part-2, I chose a much stronger AT tyre. And was successful.

This gentleman is talented and he should move to the US, there he can get a better financing and millions will follow the 100's of thousands will view or subscribe to the channel. It's a big country and got all sorts of terrain and I don't think I have a decent 4x4 show on yourtube from the US and even if there is one, they can't compete with the British when it comes to talking about cars and Motorsports. Just try to follow few minutes of Top Gear USA and those three American hosts and you will either turn the TV off or change the channel, they are boring and faking everything, really bad actors....
