It's 9th March 2018. I watched part 1 and 2. Great videos. You reminded me of my 2016 research expedition in the north west of Botswana. The first vehicle, hilux 2.7 couldn't keep up with the terrain. I had to go back to the city to regroup. 15 days on, I was on the the same terrains, this time with a hilux D4D. A success... Planning on crossing the CKGR, but not alone.

I've been watching a lot of your videos and I saw the one about how people aren't watching your Africa series so I deiced to watch your Africa series and so far this stuff is Brillian, I'm not sure why people would prefer a review of some gadget over this kind of content. to me this series is a combination of overland 4x4 video and a nat geo or nature style show, very good quality and it makes me want to see the Kalahari myself one day. As a photographer myself I think doing some things like this in North America in the future (when I graduate from the university) is definitely on my bucket list. Really lovely stuff Andrew.

Very interesting, in terms of psicology its very obvious how much more mental preparation you had for this trip, compared to the a bit over excited and "affraid of the unknown" from the 1st attempt. The way you talk, you feel and behave is a great example of mental preparedness being a huge part of any trip, especially a solo one!

Agree with your comments on the BFG all terrains I’ve had them on my last two Defenders covered 140,000 miles on them,no punctures,no pressure loss and they last forever. Will deffo be putting them on my Hilux. P.S I bet the yellow billed hornbill could have got the cheese open in a jiffy !

We met an Aussie coupl in Maun in 2009. They described the incident above I believe. Their Mercedes Benz burnt down after the grass seeds got stuck inbetween their tail pipe, causeing the fire. Crazy! They were stranded there for 3 days, on their own.

The Merg G (I owned two) is notorious for this. Grass gets caught between the exhaust and the fuel tank!

Agree with you 100% on the land cruiser reliability, I've had mine 15 years now it's done 315,000 miles and it always starts first time every time !! I did have it nearly fail am MoT due to non functioning hazard warning lights, I tried arguing the case that "Ive never needed them as it's never broken down" but the inspector wasn't giving in.. It's got to be one of the best cars ever made !!! I know that's quite a statement but unless you've owned one you wouldn't understand the peace of mind they give you.. The moment you turn the key you know that engines going to start. Personally I'm disappointed they changed to a V8 rather then that superb straight 6. That engine had a lot more to give then the 201 hp Toyota gave it.

That same vehicle let me down the following year, three days before my departing on my major Source of the Okavango Expedition. The immobilizer failed. But its the only problem I have ever had with five Land Cruisers that I have owned.

Here in the United States, Bridgestone tires have a reputation for catastrophic failure. I believe class action lawsuits have been filed against them. Theres an ongoing joke about them and it begins.... If Bridgestone made condoms.....

actually a lot of the old American brands took a dive ... I had a set of Goodyear on my 2wd tacoma and one on the rear bulged right down the centerline of the tread and cracked so bad the belting was sticking out. Crazy! seems like the asian tire manufacturers are where it's at these days. Cooper and toyo are two that come to mind but even Hankook is making a quality tire lately. BFG is about the last of the really good American tire companies imo.

I can relate to you comment about the car following the tracks Fear of the unknown is what we feel when we are on our own,in land that we have never traveled on. Second time is much easier. Hi there, not surprised the tyre felt cold when you just got out of the vehicle, rapidly expanding gasses will cool the tyre (as the compressed air inside escapes). Same way a air compressor tank will feel cold when you let the air out fast. Would have been better to feel the temperature of the other 'in-tact' tyres to get some idea how hot they really were. Great videos, very entertaining.

+Successful Engineer Sudden pressure drops temperatures. I know that. I've had several blowouts in my long career overland, and the temp of the tyre, if its hot, stays hot. And when I say hot, I mean hot. Too hot to touch. The temp drop is subject to the co-efficient of the drop in temp, yes?. 3-bar to zero in one second will cause a temp drop of what. 1°C? 5°C? Hardly noticeable. This tyre was cold because it was running cold. And if you notice, at the lunch stop, the tyre had already deflated quite a bit. So it dropped from let's say 1-bar to zero in a few seconds. The time it took to stop the vehicle would have raised the temp of the tyre far higher than the temp drop caused by pressure drop. Believe me, I've thought of everything, and have concluded that this tyre was either damaged before and I didn't know it, or it was faulty.

4xOverland Yep, you are correct, I just tried it on my car after arriving at home and could get hardly any noticeable drop in temperature while letting the air escape as quickly as I could through the valve. I thought it would be more significant ! Anyway, the mystery will persist.

Now about these tyre failures.... Casing failure leading to tread separation on these Bridgestone's smells like the Ford Explore/Firestone debacle during the late '90. Bridgestone/Firestone= same company (no?). Drives home the message about how important tyres, and the pressure within them, are. Currently I run Cooper's ATS on '98 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2 V8 which are deflated down to 24psi off-road with no such issues after 45,000km (due for replacement before winter). Previous set where Michelin LTX M&S which lasted longer and were near silent on the highway but not quite rugged enough for the dirt. Just my thoughts. Thank you for your videos, most brilliant. Envious of your budget for modifications and vehicles (we live in Canada ie no 4cyl diesels because of the chicken tax!)

sure will do ...I have one question...will a Toyota Hilux 2013 with 2.7 petrol 4 cylinder 4WD and low range gear ...but no diff lock can take on those kind of trains you do buy Land cruisers ??

Ara J Yes. No question about it. You don't need diff locks for overland exploration. And the Hilux is a tough piece of kit.

As a rule of thumb. Take your tire pressure in PSI, double it and that is your maximum speed in MPH. 20psi, max speed 40mph

That burnt out car wreck is of a ¹st generation Mercedes-Benz ML SUV 4X4 - could be that dry grass got caught underneath the car next to hot areas like the exhaust and caused the vehicle to catch fire & burn out. Fire Extinguishers are very important.

I believe manufacturers use Bridgestone tyres because they’re cheap, they are factory fit on my Hilux and to replace them in the U.K. is approx £90 per tyre fitted BFG AT KO2s are approx £175 per tyre fitted. Cheap is not always good value. I have run BFGs on 3 Defenders without any punctures or issues totaling 250,000 miles. That’s good enough for me.

Tyres - And I know you are not inviting comments. However at 30.5, to my eye that tyre that blew on the Discovery, had absolutely zero tread on it. It wouldn't matter if it was Bridgestone 694's or your beloved BF Goodrich, it was bound to fail. I can't comment on the driver other than to say it's always, always, always, the driver's responsibility to 1. Check the vehicle to ensure it is roadworthy; and 2. Drive in a responsible manner for the safety of all and protection of the track. It sounds like this driver did neither.

Wow this blew my mind, being more than 100 km from any civilization, no phone signal and all that i think my adrenalin would pump so much constantly thinking if some small annoying part on the car would break or tire failure as you had. I just moved to the south of spain and can be tires on ground in Marokko in 2 hours. Do you carry satelite phone? If you broke down mid trip it would almost be impossible for most people to walk out

I love wildlife photography and videography and would love to have a vehicle like yours just to travel around the UK and possibly into Europe don't have that sort of budget though but would be a great Base to use for a road trip camping and photography. Well done!!! On the journey and the video. Those vistas are simply spectacular!!! Good call on the BF Goodrich All-Terrain's. I've had great experiences with them as well. Just curious, how much does the temperature drop at night in that part of the Kalahari? As for getting the gas smell off your hands, keep several lemons(or limes) on your next overland trip. If you spill some gasoline on your hands, then rub them all over your hands after you've washed them with soap and water. Baking soda & vinegar also work. At least that's worked for me. Also, how much water are you taking with you on a lengthy trip like this one?

Thanks for the great tip. I take min 5L per person per day. Plus water for washing bodies. Plus a few litres for the vehicle. I was carrying 60L for this trip, in three 20L cans. I used about half of that.

For years I have been driving on East Africa roads, I happened to have used, so many tyre brands from, double coin, pirelli, Michelin, good year, ling long, Yokohama hajari, Dunlop grandtrek, kumho, ceat, bridgestone desert dueler, continental, Firestone, avero, BFGoodrich All terrain KO2, I have never used a better tyre like BFG, followed distance by Michelin xzy England√

+sito Guns are not allowed in the reserves...in fact it is one of the biggest no no's. I carry pepper spray - don't know if it will really be of any worth but it gives a bit of comfort.
