Geat instructions there lad. Im based in ireland myself and run a channel around repairs and with a few corolla videos in there for good measure. I daily a tsport but my mrs has a 4zz 05 hatch and i have often wondered about the specifics of how to go about the 1zz mod. One thing that would be important for me is a completely stock look so would be interested to know if the 1zz air pipe to the airbox is a straight fit of whether a reducer would be needed. Did you ever see any negative effects from running this mod over time?

Thanks for the compliment, appreciate it a lot. The 1zz airline for a Celica will fit, but best to trim a bit of the end of with a saw as it's really too long in the 4zz engine bay. This was the mod will be OEM looking. No negative effects I noticed on my car. Ran the mods for 4 or 5 years and drove 35,000 miles with them. If anything.... my car ran better with them.

Hi! Im looking forward to doing this mod to my 4ZZFE Corolla too. However, i was thinking of keeping the 4ZZ’s fuel injectors. You said you did the dyno run with the 1ZZ ones but then swapped the old ones back in. What was the difference between the 4ZZ and the 1ZZ fuel injectors? Do you think you lost hp with the 4ZZ ones instead of the 1ZZ?

1zz Injectors were making the car run rich was bad for the CAT. I think with 4zz injectors my fuel to air ratio was better. I think there was 3hp loss with 1zz injectors vs 4zz.

Hi, Thanks a lot for ur content, the guide is on top but i have still a question about the car parts : Is it obliged to take celica 1.8 vvti parts or can we take from other models like verso/avansis ? Thanks for the compliment. :) You are not obliged to take Celica parts. MR2 1zz and Avensis 1zz I know for a fact work. However. You must make sure the Throttle Body isn't electronic. (The Celica one isn't so that's why I recommend it) The Avensis and Verso sometimes came with an electronic Throttle Body.

Thanks, I don't have footage of it. So that's why I couldn't include the steps. I think its only required if the intake manifold was taken from a Celica. It's nearly invisible. On the bottom right of the manifold near the radiator cap there is a tiny black nipple. This is where you'll need to run a 4mm hose to. Then, connect the bottom of the T joiner to that 4mm hose. Then simply connect the T joiner to the 8mm vacuum hose that was already on your 4zz or 3zz. If you send me your email address I'll send you a picture of exactly the location

Hello! First of all - great video I’ve got an E120 (e12 5 door) with the same engine (4ZZ-FE) and have a few questions. I’ve managed to source a celica 2002 throttle body and inlet manifold , part numbers all match up. Regarding the wiring of the TPS - you say you can source the male connector from the celica loom to then plug the wires into - if i cannot source one of these what do i do? Also - what size diameter is the silicon hose if you or anyone else knows? Did you give the inlet and throttle body a comprehensive clean before you put them on too?
@HobTecCars
@HobTecCars Ай бұрын
Hi thanks for the compliment much appreciated. I can help you out a lot I think. So first thing is first. I've never done this mod on a E12 but the process should be 90% the same. A good friend of the channel has bought the 1zz male TPS connectors from Aliexpress. The part links are in the description. They worked perfectly for him. He hand wired his 4zz TPS loom into that connector. The Airbox pipe diameter I used for an E11 was 76mm in diameter. This was a perfect size for the 1zz throttle body. On the Airbox size it was a little loose. But a simple Hose clamp worked perfectly to seal it tight to my airbox. Finally, yes I comprehensively cleaned the Throttle Body, IACV, and Intake Manifold before install. I recommend doing it if you have the time. My car honestly ran like a new car after, I think it made a difference. Follow me on hobtec_cars Instagram and message me there for any further help I can give.

Great question. No problems with the NCT. The cars emissions were perfect after the modification. I drove this car for another 3 or 4 years after these mods with no issues. As for insurance I went about it the legally correct way. I got a SIMI approved dealer to do an Engineers Report on the modifications. I submitted that to the insurer and everything was above board. No increase in premiums or anything like that. Just declared openly and honestly.

Awesome video mate. Got the same Corolla in *almost* mint condition, silver, make 2000s ,1.4L VVT-I 4ZZ-FE. Doing some preventive maintenance these days , replaced plugs already (big improvement), cleaned the MAF and next planning to disassemble the air intake manifold to address an air leak issue (When you spray Carb cleaner near the intake manifold - revs go down and car chokes, only when cold=air leak nearby). Already bought the 17171-22030 Elring gasket. From the video I've learned a lot (I'm an amateur in this area, but enthusiastic to fix my own stuff). Any other parts you can recommend/suggest that I might need during this process, or some tips you can give to make it easy for a first timer?
@HobTecCars
@HobTecCars 4 ай бұрын
Thank you for the lovely compliment, it really makes my day. Good work on tackling the maintenance yourself. While you are doing this type of work I'd recommend the following. 1. When fitting the intake manifold gasket. Some PH neutral soap like Fairy liquid make help put the gasket 17171-22030 in place if needed. 2. While you have the intake manifold out I'd spray crab cleaner down each of the 4 small plastic intakes on top and wipe down any excess black carbon with a microfiber cloth. Do the same for the main part of the intake manifold on the side that connects to the throttle body. 3. While you have the intake manifold out, spray carb cleaner all over the inside of the throttle body and wipe away the black carbon. This will improve airflow into the engine. Use your hand to open and close the throttle manually. Ensure the spray doesn't touch the MAF sensor. 4. Finally, I'd consider changing the throttle body Idle Air Control Valve Gaskets while you have these parts out. I've a video coming on this in a few weeks time so keep an eye out. Parts are: TOY-22215-7A680 You need to remove 3 or 5 Philips Head screws in the throttle body. And the I.A.C.V essentially pops out in 2 parts. Remove the old gaskets, carbon clean the whole IACV area. They are usually seized with carbon and dirt. Make sure the magnet can spin freely in your hand. Install the new gaskets. And put back in your car. These few things will ensure your 4zz-fe runs like a dream.
@tcommonsense
@tcommonsense 4 ай бұрын
@@HobTecCars Roger that.
@tcommonsense
@tcommonsense 4 ай бұрын
@@HobTecCars Question though : since the IACV has some coolant pipes going in/out of it - how worried should I be disconnecting those and letting some of the coolant leaking out while attempting to clean the actuator/magnet from carbon buildup?
@HobTecCars
@HobTecCars 4 ай бұрын
Fair question. If you are disconnecting coolant pipes you will loose a small amount of coolant. When removing the pipes have a friend block the pipes or pinch them or tape them to stop them draining. Then once the IACV is refurbished and everything is back on the car. Remove the radiator cap and let the car idle for an hour. Air bubbles in the coolant will bubble out safely. Then reinstall the radiator cap and top up the coolant in reservoir (if required) When idling the car if the front of the car is slightly elevated on a hill it is better. As the air bubbles from the coolant will remove themselves easier. Happy DIYing

and the most important question - is it any diffrence between this two throttles?
@HobTecCars
@HobTecCars 6 ай бұрын
Hi there, I've been thinking over your question the last 24 hours and it isn't a simple answer. I'll try to be clear as I can. You cannot use the part number I've listed for the Throttle Body. If your car is an automatic with an electric Throttle Body you'll need to buy that version. It is completely different vs the manual version. See an image here on the right. uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170220/4b3d1c6d79c50b4accd7025170fd14b0.jpg Then in theory you ou need to wire your 3zz throttle wiring loom into the new 1zz throttle body. I don't know of the wiring matches up so you might need to create a custom loom to match up the wires. The part number you gave me '89452' is just a Throttle Position sensor. It won't do anything to help the situation. In Europe, there are very few Automatic cars from this era. (I've never seen a ZZ engine in Auto) HOWEVER, I'm sure someone in the world has done this swap with an Automatic (Electronic) Throttle Body. I'm sure some searches from US websites or Facebook groups will have the answers you need. In my head it should be possible to does this swap, I just don't have the hands on knowledge to help you. Hope that helps a bit, thanks!

Hi, it depends on which intake manifold you have bought for the modification. I used a 1zz Celica one which has an extra vacuum inlet. It's located on the bottom lower right of the manifold. It's very small and about 4mm in diameter. The bottom of the T Joiner connects to that. Then the Left and Right sections of the joiner just run into join the pre exisiting vacuum lines that are already on the 4zz or 3zz. You will see these when you remove the throttle body and intake manifold. They are about 8mm in diameter

Hi there, short answer is YES. However, stroking these engines is fairly involved. By the time you buy a 1ZZ crankshaft, Pistons, and Con Rods and factor in labor costs..... you could have bought a whole 1ZZ-FE for the same cost. As regards Turbo-ing the engine, either stroked or factory low PSI boost would be best. The 1zz is a light block, TTE made a 1ZZ Turbo kit in Germany running low boost to make 180hp on the 1ZZ.
