Absolutely buy one!!! I bought a 1994 Toyota Corolla brand new and owned it for 23 years with this motor. I put 389k miles on it before I donated the car to the Salvation Army vehicle donation program. It still was running fine and drivable when I donated it. I got rid of it because by that time it was just a 3rd car and it was rusted badly as I live in the northeast (outside Philly). Those engines are as reliable as the day is long.

Hello Mr Grumpy, This John Chan the fisherman. At the moment my wife and I own six(6) TOYT, 2007 tundra 5.7, 2013 rx350, 2018 nx300, 2023 gr86, 2007 rx350, and last but not least a2009 Yaris with 155K miles on paid about 5 k $ for it. My wife, my kid and I drove the Yaris to MN. This yaris was fully loaded. Luggage at 150 lbs. This little 1.5 liter got us to the destination for approximately 1500 miles. It average at 35 to 36 mpg. At MN I checked the oil and had to add 1/4 quort of oil, that's it. As you can see, as I got older and wiser I only stick with toyt. Oh yeah my tundra has 191K on it and pull my fishing boat (22 ft) every summer. I like your video and I watch the whole clip. Thanks young man.

Informative video, thanks. I have an 04 Toyota Matrix I've had it for 3 years and it has 158,000 Mi on it. I change the oil every 5,000 miles with full synthetic. The oil doesn't even get dirty between oil changes. Doesn't burn so much as a drop. 20-year-old car with almost $160,000 MI. The car has no shakes or rattles or vibrations truly runs like a new car. That's all I got to know bro

A data point to show how far the Corolla has come… a brand new Corolla with the 2.0 does 0-60 in about 8 seconds and gets over 40 MPG. 20 years ago that would have been absurd.

The current 1.8 is a great engine especially for the Atkinson cycle hybrid engine which I have in the current model corrola smooth reliable and epic fuel economy I'm getting 70 mpg UK not sure what that is in US conversion but great better than anything out there on the market, thank goodness that at least one current manufacturer still remains engineering lead rather than most car manufacturers being run by pen pushing accountants

Is there a big difference between the Japanese and American made 1.8? I have an 03 Japanese Corolla with a 04 American made engine. It runs super rich but the computer trims the fuel (-40 long term) and it runs great other than a slight rough idle, 35-40 hwy mpg. Changed plugs, O2 sensors, MAF sensor, and fuel pressure regulator, and checked for vacuum leaks, all to no avail. So I took it to a mechanic who was at a loss because of the engine swap done before I bought it.

@GrumpyMonkeyGarage

Matrix and vibe are fantastic cars, I do think the exhaust is different so make sure it has the old exhaust on the matrix when you swap it. I don't usually swap platforms but I do know when you price a long block they're the same.

I have a 2013 corolla 1.8 with 143k miles.. The dealer said it is leaking from the timing chain tensioner. It looks like this is a common problem with the 1.8L since there are so many videos on youtube about it. It is losing about 1 qt every 5 k miles. Is it worth trying to fix it? Or are trying to fix oil leaks on older cars like playing wack a mole?

Had a 1989 Corolla RS and gave to my step son in 2009 after purchasing a new 2009 Corolla. Drove the 09 for 11 years until this drunk butthead decided not to stop for a red light at an intersection. T-Boned me on the passenger side and only God’s grace I was by alone at the time. She was totaled and had almost 300,000 miles on the clock. She was easy to maintain and only replaced the water pump, alternator, struts, and regular maintenance and that’s it!

I just discovered your channel, I thought it was very good, but it would be great if you responded to the messages. I'm glad to know your girlfriend has a 9th Gen Corolla E120. At home (Neuquén, Patagonia Argentina 🇦🇷) we have one, year 2007 with the 1ZZ-FE that you mentioned, but 5 speed manual. Here, when choosing a used car, people usually buy manual ones to avoid future problems, since there are few owners who provide proper maintenance for an automatic transmission, not to mention that they are more expensive in every way, from maintenance to requiring the ATF and specific filter, until repairs (in the worst case). Greetings! Saludos!

The 1zz fe is complete junk in my opinion! From the late 90’s to 2005! They will use a quart of oil every 300 miles after you get 50,000 (if you get) you obviously never owned one! The timing chains always have trouble, the vvt system is junk which started in 2000 by the way. Your lying about your gas mileage too! Do some research on the 2000-2005 1.8 disaster!
