I sailed on a brand new CAL2-30 hull 203,nin Hawaii. I think it was the second to last 2-30 built before the 3-30. It is very quick off the wind.. Yes a mini CAL 40. Wish I had seen this video when you put it out, I would have bought it sight unseen.... The 2-30 I was on the owner won a lot of races in Hawaii with it. That boat you show is not that bad, but that baby blue paint, someone had to be on drugs. Thanks for showing it.

I'd love to see more attention paid to sail inventory and condition on these reviews. Oftentimes that is a *huge* variable on used boats, and can make the difference in whether it's a good buy or something that you need to spend 5-figures on before you can go sailing.
@YachtHunters2 жыл бұрын
Great point… often times the sails are stored and out of reach… it’s definitely one of the first few questions we’d suggest for the seller/broker as you’ve said it can be a big $$ item. Often times what we’ve heard is either ‘serviceable’ or ‘in good shape’ but you really don’t know until you get a full report from a surveyor
@2011mendo2 жыл бұрын
I'd always go into any deal on a sailboat knowing that new sails needed. Unless it's been used a lot in the last year, then "maybe",,, Rigging, and sails, should make one feel a lot safer in any case...

Hey you two! I think the captain pre-dates me, but these exemplified the sort of boat I learned to sail on! (not counting the little Moth scow on the Muskoka lakes in Ontario) As a teen, I would beg to crew on these sort of boats - races across Lake Huron and Erie! Perfect boats for the Great Lakes as weekend racer/cruisers, and the short peak to peak of Great Lake waves. (after a big westerly blow, even Lake Erie could get 16’ers, though!) These we’re “big” boats to me then. Great vid - many memories! Cheers

My previous Cal34 Mk1 had a nearly identical layout with a much more commodious fore cabin. My current Cal34 MkIII has a more "deluxe" interior and fixes a few of the issues you noted here: steel beam for the mast post, bridge deck, bigger head. lovely folding table, more conventional galley on one side of the companionway, .... BUT, I love those quarterberths: excellent motor access and really easy ingress and egress (there you go Alan...) and big enough for a big guy!!

One of my brother-in-laws is a boatbuilder, retired, who says the worst cases of osmosis he saw, came with the advent of chopper guns! Hand laid up hulls didn’t give near as many problems! I used to spend a bit of time in a local yard, here in NZ, where many US boats got hauled out for osmosis repairs. One hundred percent of those hulls had been built using chopper guns! When stripping off the outer hull skin, not only would water literally gush out, but the areas, with little resin in the matting, was unbelievable! How they passed hull inspection can only be described as criminal, in humble opinion!

In my opinion, a 27-30 foot sloop is in the “Goldilocks” zone...not too small to enjoy out past the buoys, not too large in needing the varsity football team to trim sails....she’s “just right!” As a day sailer, could be a very nice “Jack and Jill” boat. Cotter pins should be bent however to facilitate easy removal. I LOVE the Atomic 4. I have known many who replaced them for big bucks and regretted that move. This is a boat that can and has circumnavigated the globe. At least her little sister (29) did. Her captain nearly went over the fan tail taking a piss. So while I am on this issue,,,,, piss on your knees over the side/ fan tail whatever. Never piss over the side standing up on a small vessel. 90% of the pleasure vessels are powered by gasoline. That engine (NOT motor with all due respect) is still running fine after all these years but the upgraded diesels offered at the time can be shit finding parts for. This is a very fine vessel for a very fine price. That engine can be rebuilt with new rings and whatever with only a light honing of the cylinders. No over-bore needed. There will be good and plenty of those A-4s celebrating their 100 years in marine service. PLUS gasoline does not present the black sea snot issues diesel fuel does. Many look down their nose at the A-4,,, I however do not. Yes, "cruising range" with an A-4 is something to be dealt with but c'mon she is a SAIL BOAT. If you want a motorboat then buy a freaking motorboat. I am no fan of the Cal 40 honestly. This is a totally lovely vessel. The "SCIENCE" of lightening 'protection' is still on the drawing board,,,,,plenty of money being made via promises through selling stuff. You and Ran,,,DAY are my favorite youtube channel. You get right down to affordable sailing.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,CARRY ON! PS,,the A-4 was originally designed to power U.S. Navy lifeboats. That one there is like 2nd or 3rd iteration.

A year on the hard, with a few drops and test runs from West Palm Beach each to the Bahamas, ( which is the greatest reason for boating). A weekend or two that will keep you wanting to continue the project. In the end, you'd have maybe another $10k into it. Then off to St Thomas or Puerto Rico... Spend a month, come back all refreshed. $15 k out the door, and memories of a lifetime. Yep this is a deal.. Caribbean cruiser !!! Get now, test after hurricane season. I'm buying a Cheoy Lee 27, I'm paying less, but, it's in pretty good shape. If not, I would try this one. The A4 is a lawnmower engine, if you can fix one of those, you can fix an A4. I'm actually thinking about putting in a rebuilt or a Palmer, it has nothing right now. Everyone wants a diesel, but an A4 is so damn simple it's almost ridiculous. I had one in my Tartan 27 and it ran like a sewing machine, smooth and like CQ said, quiet. Just like any other system on a boat, it needs to be maintained. I love how CQ tries to go to Instagram, that cracks me up every time.

I raced on a cal 2-30 on the southern Chesapeake bay fast but gets cranky in strong wind downwind and you really needed to use the blopper also the mast is stepped on a steel fittings that can rust I had previously raced on a Kirby 25 so doing foredeck was a bit of a shock and you definitely need a reaching strut but get rid of the wire halyards. If your racing area allows you to race in phrf c you will kill the fleet worth putting the fixed prop to get there
