Hot tip: If you don’t want sharpie to smudge, and REALLY want it to be permanent, keep a small can of clear acrylic spray paint on hand. Wait for the sharpie to fully dry and give it a wick shot with the clear. Once it’s dry, give it another quick shot and it’ll never wear off.

Wow I showed this boat I believe just 4-5 years ago. I walked into the barn and told my customer this is too nice for us! Was incredibly nice. Went through the boat and he looked at me and said "But it's not a Swan" . We had gone east to find a fast cruiser, preferably a cruiser racer. Looked at least 10 boats. Second boat was a Swan 47. Came close to a deal but da fail and my client bought a Swan 46. The Pedrick had a great back story and is so incredible for because of such little use and deep pocket owner.

Okay, I'm going to mention something about mid-eighties Cheoy Lees - or at least the 1985 built, Robert Perry designed CL 48 which I examined thoroughly about four years ago in the Seattle area. The boat was dirt cheap, having deck damage caused by leaking teak bung holes and was abandoned by the owner - it was being sold by the yard for back rent. The teak deck had been removed; the screw holes epoxied. The interior was stripped, and it was easy to see how the boat had been put together. The big problem we discovered was that the boat's fiberglass layup was ENTIRELY matt and resin - not a single layer of woven roving. And woven roving is the big strength factor in fiberglass hulls. The bulkheads were tabbed in on one side only with matt, not roving - and not even attached to the deck! We could look at the layup where thru-hulls had been removed and confirm our examination. The deck core was widely spaced strips of plywood, often with extensive gaps. I was not impressed with construction of the boat at all, but to the average boater, when it was factory new and with furniture/headliner covering everything, it probably looked very nice and Perry's design was gorgeous. I have read of large Cheoy Lee powerboats turning out to be built with nothing but matt - and at least one was damaged when hauled out due to the brittle hull cracking while being on a Travelift; and I recall the owner sued. I'm sure other years of CLs are okay, but something was going wrong around the time this featured Pedrick design was built, so I'd look carefully to see if the hull actually contains alternating layers of roving/matt. My entire opinion of CL changed after that inspection.

Pedrick is an engineer as well as a naval architect and would have provided a laminate schedule along with the design. Pedrick would have included contractual obligations by Cheoy Lee to build the boat as specified in his design agreement. I did survey a 1967 Sigma 38 built by Cheoy Lee to an S&S design and it was a proper laminate although laid up hot. That said, yes, corners were cut all across Asia.
@Morrisfactor

@@BrianNavalinsky I read an article where Pedrick himself was arguing with CL for not following his laminate schedule. I believe he quit designing for them after that dispute.

@@BrianNavalinsky Following is a quote on R. Perry's SAILING ANARCHY: I had a customer call me out to look at a project once. It was a 100ft+/- Custom Cheoy Lee yawl. She had gone into a shipyard in Bayou La Batre AL for a bow thruster installation, they put her right into the slings and picked her up,,,,,with full tanks. :eek: The hull pulled away from all the bulkheads and stiffeners allowing diesel and freshwater to flood the boat. . The hull was a total loss. Now this was an much older boat but the very interesting thing, when we took hull samples, she was constructed entirely of Chopped Strand Mat.. Not a stitch of roving in the entire boat. Never had much faith in CL's after that.

@@Morrisfactor It doesn't surprise me. When you had yards in Taiwan using newspaper and polyester resin for keel fillets and woven hemp for woven roving, all bets are off. I saw bamboo coring in a deck laminate on a trawler. I also saw a filler that looked like peanut butter with the consistency of peanut brittle only to find out it was rice flower mixed with cheap polyester resin. It was a nightmare, but a few yards hired me to clean up their act. I will never forget when laminating rollers I ordered from Japan showed up at one yard. It was literally like when the band instruments showed up in Music Man. The entire crew was in amazement.

When you think you can charter this boat for a week and check out the bugs under sail it becomes a no brainer at the asking price. Cheoy Lee has a pedigree that is almost like it takes home "best in show" more often than the other dogs out there. All that's missing is a 20 knot push and a star to steer by. You may need to expand your scoring wheel size at this rate Captain Q. I too wish to see the Randay progress since the sea cock conundrum. Happy trails boys.

Another beauty, Captain Q, and one that provides an element of deja vu. A similar - or the same? - boat was owned by a friend, who I flew out to Maine to sail with on his freshly acquired vessel about 12 years ago. She was named "Arc d'Or" and I loved my time aboard. Without doubt the best laid-out sailing vessel I have experienced. She was in good order for her age and my friend, a true perfectionist, subsequently spent significant sums rendering her near as good as new and, in some respects, better than new. I had hoped he would transat her over to Europe (with me as crew), but he retained her in Maine for occasional only summer use & had her cocooned indoors each winter. If I had the money & time, I would without hesitation purchase her.
@grahambridge2398
@grahambridge2398 2 жыл бұрын
My footnote: Have dug-out photos of "Arc D'or" taken by my friend in about 2015 (after I had sailed on her, & with her subsequent improvements) and the main items in galley, chart table area, etc appear to be exactly the same. However, she was by then fitted with a Monitor windvane, which I note the boat now for sale lacks. Having installed and used a Monitor vane on my own boat some years back, I find it hard to believe anyone would divest themselves of such a brilliant piece of kit - always performed perfectly & absolutely no back-chat! So, No.1 'crewmember', rendering solo sailing practical.

i have only sailed with a monitor for about an hour but i dream about their use and all the similar products as well my son in law and daughter just sailed to greenlamd with their Hydro vane in 40-50 kts of wind in the Labrador sea in total comfort wow

@@YachtHunters Congratulations to your daughter & son in law, that must have been quite an experience! For oceanic single-handing I'd probably be tempted to pay extra in opting for the Hydrovane, if only for its capacity to be utilised as an emergency rudder. It is of course a very well proven piece of kit: not in the least by Jean-Luc Van den Heede employing one in winning in 2019 the Golden Globe Race in 211 days in his hard-driven Rustler 36.

I did a number of surveys, mostly as an owner's rep, in Asia in the 80's and 90's on yachts under construction. Cheoy Lee had their own way of doing things. They were fair to middling, but I think their association with Pedrick brought them along to building a better boat.

WOW Episode 100 !! Way to go Captain Q and Randay !! To borrow a phrase: "this is the stuff that dreams are made of". At this price point one has to wonder if there is some big hole in the hull or an infestation of squirrels in the bilge or something. It's an affordable ocean going home. I could see myself living aboard until I can no longer care for myself. That galley makes me drool for some beef stew. The engine looks like it was rebuilt 1 hour ago. Wait, I figured out the low price, no bow thruster ? This is a sale waiting to happen, no pun intended. I would be shocked if this beautiful boat isn't already under contract. If I had the cash (or the income) I'd be on the next plane to Southern Maine. There is literally nothing I can see that would keep me from moving on board and heading out to sea. With the current political climate I might be tempted to never look back. +2 points for the nav station, so a TrueScore of 51 ! Amazing boat, always good to see you Captain, looking forward to the next 100 episodes with you and Randay. Cheers !! 💯✌

I do have a question about the stainless steel grade used on this boat? Heard there was a problem with the early 304 stainless steel used at this time. Especially if the chain plates were then encapsulated in the fiberglass (airless environment). The 304 SS would corrode to failure. Causing the standing rigging to fail. Thus the mast to fail. Chevy Lee and Island Packet suffered the same failures until the 2000s when 316 stainless steel was introduced. From the pictures you showed, it looks like the chain plates on this vessel are this very type?

Just found your channel and this is the first video I've watched and it was wonderful. You guys are great together as a team and it seems as if you have lots of knowledge and wisdom of boats and sailing. I'm new to this sport and always wanted to do it but being a professional chef and owning and running my catering business for 30+ years didn't allow me much time for myself. I'm now 53 and semi retired and very excited to learn how to sail and eventually purchase a sailboat. Glad to know there are beautiful used boats like this one for reasonable prices. One question: do you think I'm too old to get into a hobby like this? I know most sailors start out much younger than me and have bought many boats over their lives starting small and working their way up to bigger ones. Since I'm already up there in age, I feel maybe I won't have the time to start small and move up slowly but I also realize that it's probably better to start small to learn the basics. I'm afraid I won't have enough time. Does this make sense? I'm not rich either so I wouldn't be able to buy several boats and resell them at loss and still have enough to buy my dream boat. I would like to eventually sail down the east coast (I'm from Pennsylvania) into the Caribbean and live on my boat with my wife for maybe half the year and then work the other half to finance our trips. Anyway, it's a dream of mine. What would be your recommendation for someone like myself who is new to the hobby and my age? I'm fit and healthy (yes, even as a chef) and love to get my hands dirty. I'm pretty handy with engines, plumbing, woodwork and some electrical too. Not afraid to work. Thank you for your time and sharing your many years of knowledge with all of us in these videos. I'm looking forward to your thoughts and more videos and more learning. Best of luck with your channel! You've got a new subscriber! Take care and God bless!

Bon appétit Phillip You are absolutely in perfect situation to start your sailing career. 53 is young you have some money in a business behind you, you have some skills other than boiling lobsters or flipping burgers. You are ready to take a boat and head to the islands and when Cash gets short cook up a banquet. Seriously all you need to do is find a sailing school nearby learn to sail a small boat and I recommend something between 18 and 20 feet. I taught in Rhodes 19s which is a perfect learning tool. The beauty about selling is that if you can sell a 19 footer you can sell a 50 footer or more. The only difference is learning how to fix all the extra stuff that we think we need to go offshore like engines and icemakers electronics etc. etc. etc. As far as learning all the extentricities in the menusia of sailing I would recommend offering your body up as rail meet on some local racers Windward rail. You will learn a lot very quickly and be comfortable making the boat you choose able to go in light air or survive a storm or claw your way off a Lee shore As always I recommend reading anything you can get your hands on so that you immerse yourself in technology and terminologies involved with boats that you might choose to live upon. I would love to have the 35 years back myself but trust me you’re in great space. My way of an example, my son-in-law taught him self how to sail about six years ago and he is in his early 50s right now and as we speak his navigating His own 46 foot boat through the Northwest passage dodging icebergs etc. he will be able to read his story in a national geographics publication sometime next fall I imagine. While you’re learning be sure to watch as many videos as you can especially Captain Q episodes and scour the local craigslist as well ascruisingworld.com. You are not gonna believe what you are about to experience Sailing is right up there with great sex and a perfect Beef Wellington (Or for some of use a superb Dinty Moore on egg noodles)

@@YachtHunters wow, thanks Captain Q! I was a little concerned that I may be a little too old so this makes me feel very happy. I will try to see if I can find a sailing club near me but since I'm in SE Pennsylvania it's been a bit difficult. Any particular books, channels, websites you'd recommend for a beginner like me? If I understand you correctly is to try to learn as much from other sailors on their boats and maybe rent out a smaller boat a few times to learn and then buy my dream boat? Is that what you meant? What I'm most concerned about is when I go to look at my dream boat (it will be used because I'm not rich) how do I avoid being sold a lemon? When it comes to classic cars and some motorcycles I know what to look for but sailboats are new to me and I don't even know all the lingo. What did you mean about "offering my body up as rail meet on some local racers...." or something like that to learn? I think this was a typo, lol! I am still amazed with some of these boats you feature. Where do you find them and since I'm from Pennsylvania where would you suggest I look for my dream boat when the time comes? Up in New England or along the east or west coast, Florida, Texas? Where is the best place or I suppose it could be anywhere. I've looked online but never saw good deals like you seem to feature in your videos. If I could find a ready to go bluewater sailboat over 40 feet for less than 90k I'd be ecstatic! Very cool about your son in law too! Thanks for relaying that story as we seem to be about the same age although he had a head start on me learning how to sail. Thanks again for your thoughts here Captain! Appreciate them. Sailing better than sex?! Hmm, I guess we'll have to find out, lol! Just because I'm a professional chef doesn't mean I can't appreciate some Dinty More over noodles, haha! I'm half Italian so I love pasta!🤣 Take care and God bless!
