The Bombay High Court has given the green light to the ₹5,000 crore Dharavi Redevelopment Project, marking a turning point for Mumbai. This project, covering over 600 acres of prime land, is set to rehabilitate 100% of Dharavi’s residents while preserving its unique economic ecosystem.
In my conversation with Sandhya Ravishankar on NDTV Profit, I shared my thoughts on this transformative initiative. We discussed the challenges of redeveloping Dharavi, the importance of ensuring a better quality of life for residents, and the use of advanced construction technologies to speed up the process.

Living in slums is what the market supports for slum dwellers, given their skills and earning abilities. We are interfering with the market. Based on past data from various parts of the world, old residents always get replaced. Their earning capacity is not enough to enable them to live in the housing forced upon them. Even if the housing is free, recurring costs are higher. To achieve the same end though, we should have instead spent on up-skilling these working-class folk so that they could themselves afford a much better life. Then the market would have liked it. Our priorities are wrong.

@@avinashh34 The market decides whether slums should be developed. Meaning, the slum dwellers choose where they want to live and how. In other words, they have to have the freedom to choose. In India, though, few have that freedom. That’s not capitalism, which is based on the concept of individual freedom. There is no human who does not want the freedom to live in better conditions, provided the society enables it to afford those conditions. Time to forget political parties and the wealthy. And think about how to transform society into one that enables every person to afford healthy living conditions. Can never beat the market! This is reckless spending. Bound to add further to the already high inflation and further increase inequality. Inflation is a silent tax to which the poor are the most vulnerable. A neat trick. Nothing could be more blatant.

@@pbxxxxx So it’s a money game, dlf versus Adani, isn’t it? That is just not capitalism. We all should worry about the market getting angry. Over seventy five years since we got independence from the British, but we haven’t still given ourselves independence from each other. Individual freedom to choose is the only basis of capitalism. It has nothing to do with being on the side of businesses and/or startups and beating one another with money to get one’s hands on lucrative projects. The market is going to be very upset now. It has already been upset for over seventy five years. How stupid are we? We have not yet been able to recognize the market’s wrath for over seventy five years? It is like not being able to recognize Ram the divine itself. Endless cycles of Poverty and massive amounts of Corruption are representative of the market’s wrath!

We also need A slum - free India too… Wish this has solar system, clean water reservoirs, proper drainage system and well connected roadways or railways waste management system which the whole India needs. Residence waste management system, industries waste management system should plan well. It can be high rise building but it has to be plan and built at par with the ecological environment. Vendors should get a different proper building instead of laying on the streets and they too have a storage area, waste management system. Basically a clean India and best sustainability. We have to set a bench mark for clean India, best sustainability and best ecological environment and more Natural materials.

I might not be able to buy flat in Hiranandani now , but I know Niranjanji is the real Hira in manufacturing houses of US/Europe Quality in India, and there is no doubt such type of houses can be built by other tapori builders (like Adani/Godrej etc...) due to which life of buildings is declared as 35-40 yrs by BMC.

As long as people are not skilled, and don’t get jobs after which they can afford decent housing, no matter what you do the question of slums will repeat again. The thing with dharavi is by redeveloping the area we might get rid of world biggest slum tag but there would be slums, and congress strategy is to keep people poor so they can be shown the illusion of roti, kapda, makaan or freebies and make them their slaves. I hope we do real rerorma and become manufacturing hub which would absorb all this poor people and we can rise as a nation together where disparities would shrink otherwise its same story over and over again.

I hope city planners plan Dharavi on a grid, keeping vastu in mind. Make small efficient homes with materials that are fit for the purpose. Adopt old ways of architecture to make it naturally cooler, green, drainage, rain water harvesting etc wherever possible. Self sustaining model is the need for th3 hour.
