In Slovenia we have a similar traditional "beings" that serve for escorting "sv. Miklavž" (saint Nicholas) besides some angels. We call them "Parklji".

Halloween is quite similar in that it came from paganism (just like all the good/fun things), and you're supposed to dress up to look as scary as possible to drive the evil spirits away. Christmas came from paganism again. Try to take everything pagan away and you get something like protestantism, which is outright dull. Catholicism, on the other hand, borrows pagan traditions heavily - whether it be holidays, the way gothic cathedrals look and what not. This is why Catholicism looks most appealing to the general population, where they have saints, beautiful singing, beautiful churches, etc. Old traditions haven't died completely. They live on, even if in different forms.

first of all... they are normally very kind to little children. and the kids are not afraid of them. Only after years of socialication, they learn which look is evil and which is not. THEN, they are afraid of them. I live in Austria and I grew up with Krampus&Co but it seems, that I am quite normal.
