Anyone else miss GOW? I know there are 8 million ways to watch baseball, but GOW was and will always be the gold standard of baseball on TV. Some local markets do it right (NESN. MASN, SNY) but Fox is a train wreck and CBS was worse. And don't get me started on ESPN (nauseating since they dumped Jon Miller). Used to be that you could set your watch on Saturdays to 1:05 on NBC. Now, you need a search party to find a weekly national game. Thanks for putting this up. Now we just need full GOW from the 60s and 70s.

Sad to see the interview with the Kid, Gary Carter What a positive and upbeat way he spoke about Gooden. Carter was a class act and great leader in clubhouse. More important, he was a believer. Amen!!

I still remember these guys so well! Webster's hop-step when he threw from the outfield, Galarraga's lunging swing (resulting in lots of HBP), Burke's haircut, and the faces in the dugout of Bryn Smith, Floyd Youmans, I even recognized Herm Winningham! That was the year I paid more attention to baseball than any other in my life. By September I was living in Toronto and witnessed the Jays' epic collapse.

The Mets had all the components to defend their title in '87, but so many distractions occurred, that they petered out by September. The Expos had a good year in 1987, too, as Nick Johnson said.

I was a 13 year old Cubs fan duel watching the Cubs vs Padres on WGN TV Chicago and this game of the week on NBC. The Cubs had already signed Andre Dawson in the off season from the Expos as a free agent (who homered in the game against the Padres this day). And I heard all the news and reports about Tim Raines holding out for a new contract. Then it was announced the previous day that he was returning against the Mets the next day. I started following the Cubs and MLB in 1986 and I learned quickly about how good the Mets were and I disliked them for seemingly to be cocky and arrogant. I thought the Mets were soooooo lucky in the NLCS against Houston and the World Series against Boston. Nevertheless they were the best in baseball and were reigning champions. To see Rock Raines absolutely destroy the Mets that day was an amazing thrill of awe and delight. I only express it that way because the Mets despite the distractions and issues were still so loaded with talent.

If the city of Montreal had built that proposed downtown stadium, the expos would probably still be in Montreal. They had plenty of talent during that 1994 strike year. Also, they suffered from a lack of revenue with no television contact. Not enough support for major league baseball in Montreal. You have to wonder if their fortunes would have been different if they made it to, and won the world series in 1981.

Two things stand out to me about games in those years. One, no walk-up songs. Two, no in-game information. You needed to pay attention because the balls/strikes/outs were not constantly on the screen. The score was shown only at the end of the inning. Unless the camera showed you, you couldn't tell if there were men on base. I like the way things are today.
@brianoneill71865 жыл бұрын
I'm used to the on-screen score and info graphics (25 years after ESPN introduced them on the World Cup, just before NFL on Fox). Don't care for walkup music(although a lot of organists in old ballparks used to select songs that alluded to the batter's name).
@BookClubDisaster5 жыл бұрын
I loved the old way. I still mentally keep track of the count without looking at the screen because I grew up watching games where it wasn't spoon fed to you.

tim raines hall of famer! i'm still getting used to the idea he's in but worthy or not, he "eeked" his way in through election in the late years of his eligibility. after Rickey Henderson, he's the greatest leadoff hitter I ever saw. my only beef with raines was that for all the years he played -23 I think- he still did not get close to 3000 hits.

In 1987, the expos finished in third place with a record of 91-71, four games behind the cardinals. If Tim Raines had played in April, do you think the expos would've won the NL east?
@ExposClassics947 жыл бұрын
Nick Johnson no, I think the amazing start Raines got to was due to fact of him not playing in spring training
@pierrelevasseur27016 жыл бұрын
While it's a nice sentiment, I don't believe so. The Expos had played the Cards twice in early April and won both games. Most of the games they lost in April were not close. Only 4 of their 13 losses were by a run. Although you could argue that Raines could have turned those games around, they would have tied the Cardinals with 95 wins, chances are that they would not have won all four of those games with Raines. Check out www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MON/1987.shtml This game however with Raines returning helped get the Expos back on track, even if manager Buck Rodgers had Candaele lead off well into July.
