I understand why the Reagan Administration wanted to trek a middle ground between two crucial allies who were suddenly at war, but I can assure any British here in the comment section that US public opinion was firmly on the side of the UK. We could destroy Argentina's land forces on the islands using just our submarines with their cruise missiles. Never mind the fact we'd see an invasion coming long before it got there now. Argentina wouldn't be able to hide the troop movements needed to mass a force for another invasion. Also, Argentina's military capability has significantly diminished since 1982. While our forces are smaller than they were, technologically they are vastly superior than what we had in 82. Argentina doesn't even have the amphibious abilities now to invade. They just couldn't do it.

If Britain lost a carrier they had an offer of a loan of one from the US. Thatcher would never have abandoned the Falkland Islanders, particularly after UK forces had been killed liberating them.

The Argentinians would have had plenty of time to better prepare it's defense. I'm really not sure how that would have gone.

The "point" was to deflect public attention and opinion in Argentina away from the failures of the Military Junta and it's increasingly oppressive rule and to try an unite the country by means of a quick, cheap and easy military victory. Unfortunately they chose the wrong place and country to try it against. Still, at least at the end of it the Junta was overthrown and civilian rule and democracy was re-established in Argentina, you have the UK to thank for that if nothing else. A great pity that even to his day Argentina has yet to fully develop as a stable democracy though.

No. They made one attempt to go in and they got painted by radar, then the pilots and the troops had a disagreement to where they actually where. Then they flew on towards the Chilean border stopping to drop the sas off close enough to walk into Chile while the pilots flew the chopper into Chile and tried to sink the chopper in a lake in puntas arenas on the Chilean side of the border. The sas got to the Brit embassy and flew home on commercial airlines. while the pilots handed themselves in because the failure of the chopper to sink obviously compromised them and they realised handing themselves in bought the sas lads some time. They got paraded in front of the press and claimed they'd got lost due to weather conditions. After that the only observation on the mainland was naval and aerial with some keyhole stuff of the Americans. I think you can find the helicopter pilot news conference on here. The patrol commander who was chosen to lead the patrol was the legendary fijian known as nasty Neal. Bit of a livewire even in his later years

You can find it on here along with news footage of the chopper been discovered. Fact is after a certain date they didn't need recon teams on the mainland, the war was been won as it was. Plus certain allies, Chile, America and certain parts of French intelligence gave them all they needed. Plus if they'd had teams on the mainland the planning for the Entebbe style raid to kill pilots and destroy planes would have had excellent intelligence when in reality they had virtually none which is why it was 100% considered a suicide mission.

Thanks for uploading this. Even though I was just 10 at the time, I remember these newscasts quite vividly as a kid in Canada. In those days before cable news and the internet, we would rush to the news stand every morning to get the paper and tune the shortwave radio to the BBC World Service to get the latest news on the conflict. It was a war that should never have happened but we were glad Britain regained the islands and an aggressive dictator chastened. BTW, this is the way the news should be delivered folks. Professional, calm, impartial, factual. Quite a contrast to the nonsense that passes off as news today.

Argentina was a colony and it's habitants (our national leaders) expelled the spanish rulers in 1810, which was an empire. Does not have anything to do with Spain nowadays; Argentina is a mixture of many races. But form the very first moment of its history, it existed due to the decssion to fight colonialism, in fact it's your country who is a colonialist power. Great Britain is in fact at 8.000 miles of Malvinas, there's not any logical explanation of how England can be occupying a territory at that distance, if not by having been around the world seizing territories and in sme cases by force. Argentina instead expelled the british from Buenos Aires three times in 1806, 1807 (that is ten years before the independence), and 1845. That and during the struggle to freed Argentina from spanish rule, also our national leader San Martin freed Chile in 1818 anD Peru in 1820, before giving its forces to Venezuelan Simon Bolivar who freed Ecuador, Venezuela itself and Colombia. But surely you don't know the spanish were in all south america; we all have the same origin but we do not own anything to anybody, we freed ourselves. From the very first breath as independent country, Argentina fought colonialism. England can't say the same, since it occupied terrtories in 90 countries worldwide, plus changed their languages and flags. Their gov. speak about self determination. In fact, check british website naval history and see by yourself how much ships were hit by argentine aircraft. In just 44 days since 1st May and 14th June. It's the biggest loss of Britain in the Cold War; a fleet supposely meant to fight a power like the USSR, and instead almost was sent back to UK by Argentina. In fact if all the british bombs had exploded, that is what would have happened. Still, in any of the books of history of the Cold War the only british vessels sunk, was not made by USSR or China, but Argentina. A latin country, almost unknown by England in 1982, with no experience in modern warfare, and whose main aircraft (used to attack the fleet) was the A4 Skyhawk, which was a model of the 50's bought second hand from US, and armed with non guided bombs that did not explode. On the contrary, BRITAIN'S BIGGEST SUCCESS was sinking a WW2 Cruiser; from 649 argentine that died in the war, 50% were lost in sinking of General Belgrano, former USS Phoenix and survivor of Pearl Harbor in WW2.

Well, its Admiral Snady Woodward who stated in 13 June in his personal diary they were near to be defeated; and by coincidence Argentine's military Gov. General Menendez decided to surrender in 14 June. General Moore, commander of land forces admited to have survived, by one minute of difference, an air strike by A4 Skyhawks, which in 10th June bombed his own camp liocated in Monte Dos Hermanas. The Argentine Air Force and Naval Aviation were deadly, sunk many ships and damaged others: -Destroyer Sheffield Sunk in 4th May -Destroyer Glasgow baldy damaged in 12th May and withdrawn fo reparations in UK (did not return to the campaing duties) -Frigates Antelope and Ardent sunk in San Carlos Battle, in 21st and 23rd May respectively. -Frigate Broadsword hit by cannon fire twice in 12th may and 21st May and had its helicopter destroyed while it was in her deck.. -21ST may Antrim hit by two unexploded bombs and cannon fire, and left for reparations, being inactive fro the rest of the war and waiting in Georgias' waters far from the range of Argentina's Air Force - In 24th May RFA Sir Galahad was hit by unexploded bomb and abandoned temporarily, RFA Sir Lancelot also hit by bomb and later disabled while it was inside; both RFA Sir Bedivere and Frigate HMS Fearless also hit by cannon fire.. -Destroyer Coventry sunk in 25 th May, also that day logistic Atlantic Conveyor sunk toghether with his charge of 10 helicopters (among other stuff) - 30th May modified C-130 Hercules damaged a RFA Ship with non guided bomb (slight damage). Also that day Super Etendar and Skyhawk joint attack to HMS iNVINCIBLE (R-5) which was put out of action -8th June, at the Fitz Roy raid, destruction of both Sir Galahad (sunk) and Sir Tristam (burnt and abandoned in shore), plus the sinking of Landing Craft ''Foxtrot 4'' from the frigate Fearless -Destroyer Glamorgan hit by land based Exocet in 12th June, burnt and put out of action, abandoned for repairs. Plus: - in 24th April two british helicopters crashed by accident over Georgias during Operation Paraquet. -Many Harrier jets and Sea Harriers (shot down by argentine artillery at Goose Green and Pt Argentino), at least 7 according to british sources - At least two attacks from argentine sub. ARA San Luis, whose attacks, although did not sink any ship, made the british fleet to spend 6.000 flying hours by anti submarine aircraft, trying to locate it, but never found it. - 18TH/19 TH May one helicopter Sea King (number ZA-290 or 294) lost in Punta Arenas, Chile, due to climatic conditions, while trying to reach Patagonian airfields to attack. -21st May two Gazelles and one Sea King shot down and destroyed by a 40 commandos of the argentine army, out of San Carlos - 27th May a Pucara shot down, one destroyed on the ground (a Scout and a Lynx) - Also 27th May both Canberra and Skyhawk attacked the San Carlos defences and caused heavy damage - The already mentioned attack to british HQ in 10th June All this happened in just 44 days, from the 1st May in which british Task Force reached South Atlantic and operations started, and Argentina's surrender in 14th June. The Air Force lost 36 pilots, plus 19 personnel lost in land due to several reasons (british air attacks, naval bombardment, etc), and the Naval Aviation lost only 4 pilots. Most of the casualties among those forces were due to missile Sidewinder, which US provided and this was admitted by John Leman and also there's proof in british website naval history. Argentina's total losses are 649 with 1088 wounded. From those 649, nearly 50% were killed in the General Belgrano attack in 2nd May, out of the exlussion zone. From the remaining 50 %, many were civilians forming the crew of requiitioned boats, such as 20 men from ARA Isla de los Estados, an unarmed logistic that was sunk by frigate Alacrity in the night of 8th May and nearly all the crew (WHICH died) was civilian sailors, very brave that were trying to reack food to Port howard garrison. The only 3 civilian dead in Malvinas, was DUE to a british naval attack in 11th June. In british website naval history, they explain that RFA and RMAS was integrated by asian civilians hired by the british and form which probably not all the losses suffered are recognised, since they're not british. The army of Argentina was almost entirely made by conscript, very well armed in general, but with inadequate clothes, no experience in combat and some of only 3 months of training. Even so, they faced with dignity the british forces. In the Battle of Mount Longdon, Monte Dos Hermanas, and Monte Kent british reinforcements had to be called, and still it was very difficult to made them withdrawn. The argentine artillery had a very good performance in the battles of June, in spite of the lack of experience and the fact tha british artillery had longer range. No abuses were reported by civilians living in the island, plus not a single women was raped or houses destroyed; what is more, civilians in Port Argentino had commandos living among them in their houses and they still were not shot or searched.

The only element that 'nearly defeated' the British, might have been having to travel 3000 miles to fight, something that had never before been achieved in military history. Not to mention most of the conscripts were further demoralised once they got to the Falklands. There are a bunch of reports about how the conscripts became confused once they realised how British the Islands were. They expected Argentinians under British rule instead they found an English speaking people with the British flag flying proudly over homes and in pubs. Conscripts can do well if they have the numbers and the commitment to stand against an enemy force, they didn't have the commitment so surrendered in droves.

It is quite simple really. Never ever give up you deterrents. In Britains case, the large supersonic jet carriers of the fleet air arm. The Argentinians knew this, and that's why they gambled and Britain had to scrape together a helicopter carrier and a old nearly decommissioned carrier to take slower limited range jump jets. There was a post script to this war, that came close to souring the UKs relationship with the USA. In 1983 US forces attacked the Caribbean island of Grenada. Although Grenada had become independent from Britain it was a member of the commonwealth, with the Queen as head of state. As such it was entitled to the protection of the commonwealth. The news provoked anger here in the U.K. and especially in Canada. So would there be a task force? Were we involved with a limited war with the US? In fact all ended amicably. The British governor was restored. The US departed friends even with the islanders. Just embarrassing. It left a feeling here that the US just wanted an easy little island war of its own. Not really understanding the workings of the commonwealth.

I saw an interview years ago with one of the British commanders who had written a book on military history. He had interviewed some Argentinian generals for his book, and had come to the conclusion that, because we Brits were close allies of the Americans like the Argentinians we would follow the same strategy, and head straight for Stanley. But, because of the logistics train, especially after the sinking of the Atlantic Conveyor, we took a more subtle approach.
