The Avenues pretty much ran Chambers Shoe Shine Parlor. As a kid, in the 1960's, I got my first shoe shine there. 85th & Central Ave.

I remember back in 87 my best friend moved from Highland Park to Nickerson projects (Watts) and one day he came back to visit Highland Park , We where walking and he seen a Black guy and got nerves, and Started to tell me about Friday Mexicans will get beat up, He was traumatized. I lost contact with him, But I will always remember about Mexican day and wonder if it was true, and this is the first time after years hearing about it again. My childhood friend was saying the truth.

One of my lasting memories of the Watts rebellion was the smell of burnt watermelon and other fruit. That area by the Theater was all set on fire, he brings back a lot of memories. This Brother is a history book I live in the south and have never been called a nigger here but in LA It was common during that era.

So.. the Avenues actually filled the void between the Businessman, Slausons.. they fall in between them and the birth of the Crips... all of were adolescent gangs that’s should’ve faded after 4/5 years... except they didn’t

It’s crazy because I grew up in 92nd Bishops hood and back in the 70s when I was a kid there was no animosity between black kids and Mexican kids we were pretty tight. Once we hit Drew it was East Coast and F13 fuckin with us. Once they saw us cross that bridge underpass on Firestone it was a wrap lol due to The Bishops and the Mexican gangs Hickory st Watts, and Elm st Watts being on that side of the train track overpass. Now it’s the Blue line.
