I have the ruger 57,ruger lc,keltec p50,psa rock57x2(optics & non optics). Cmmg 300mk 57 upper. Something about that 5.7x28 round,been in love with it since i discovered it a few years back. I know that ammo is pricey atm but the more manufacturers that make more firearms that use this round,the more the price should drop. I think this round is a good home defense round due to the penetration not being so deep & the speed of it is more than enough to do the damage needed to stop an intruder or small game. I like the 22 magnum as well & own a few firearms that use em,but what i like about the 5.7 round is the ability to carry a massive ammount vs 9mm or 556/223. As with any ammo,all can get the job done if the placement is right. I will be taking all my 5.7,s to the range here soon to sight them in(after i green dot bore sight em) then i will be doing some small game hunting with my ruger precision 22mag this year. But my 5.7's rock 57 has become my EDC. This pistol is just B.A. & the low recoil def helped my accuracy a lot. Stay safe,great video & yall be safe out there.

From Federal's website for the Speer TNT ammo: "When you rely on rimfire for putting down distant varmints, reach for Federal Premium Speer® TNT®. The bullet's thin jacket results in explosive performance on impact, and its reliable priming and propellant provide extremely consistent ballistics. Extreme accuracy Explosive expansion on impact Speer TNT bullet design Reliable priming and propellant" Seems to me like the idea is for it to expand reliably at longer ranges. If you're up for it, maybe try the TNT in gel at 100+ yards and see if it expands instead of fragmenting once it gets downrange a ways. That said, if it will fragment reliably at shorter ranges, it may be a good choice for short range pest control where overpenetration may be a concern.

.22 WMR remains a fine choice for general mucking around the family property and woods scrounging. Varminting with lighter projectiles or small game hunting with less explosive rounds. Now that was a really interesting test Tools. I sure didn't expect those results. From all the hype about the 5.7 I sure expected much better results from that round. I will say most of the test I've seen of the 5.7 have all been shorter barreled handguns. The TNT sure did "explode" on impact. Would be interesting to see if it's any good against a real life target, most likely only for some small game. I wonder what it would have done vs. some kind of barrier, be it clothing or otherwise. Now the other 22 mag seems to have performed very good. With cost of both equipment and ammo the 22 mag is my choice over that 5.7. Be safe and ever vigilant.

@donrichter3523

Well, no, it doesn’t. Tools calculated the energy. On top of that, the bullet action was pathetic. If it can’t penetrate 12 inches of clear gel, it sure as hell won’t in 10% or in actual bodies. The round is pure hype. Even 198LF will only penetrate a few inches in gel after going thru a lvl2 panel. Sure it penetrates, but does little after doing so.
@snowballsvlogs621

Don’t forget the round is designed to tumble as well, not designed just for penetration. The wound tract of the 5.7 is devastating and is designed as a military round.

@@a1racer441you do know they are like super identical ballistically right? Speed , weight , size.. 5.7 is just center fire, and has better ballistic coefficients. 22 mag is 2200fps with a 30 grain bullet, the 5.7 he was using clocked around 2300 with a 27 grain bullet… lol where do you get 3 times the power? The 22WMR TNTs are great on prairie poodles and European starlings. Very low chance of ricochets or pass-throughs, and they drop the vermin decisively. Not great on critters much larger than jackrabbits, though. I think that with the proper ammo the Mag will more or less hang in there with the 5.7. The 5.7 has pretty much priced itself out my range while the .22 mag hasn't gone up quite as much as most other rounds. I'll just stick with the 22 mag until I suddenly get rich or a 5.7 falls out the sky and lands in my lap! Cheers, crkckr

Good video. I'm still trying to think of the niche that the 5.7 fills for me. Value? Performance? Even if it were cheaper than 5.56, I still can't think of a benefit, beyond being lighter, and more rounds in the gun. I don't really use my .22 magnum for anything either, but my sons father in law shoots coyotes with his rifle.

@@___meph___4547Thanks for the feedback. I am looking for a reason to get something in 5.7, but I already have so many mouths to feed, I need a good reason. The 5.7 is (in my humble opinion) a round that is only useful for target/plinking shooting. It is only for “the fun and exhilaration” of shooting it. The experience is (although quite expensive) quite a bit of fun. Problem there is: often times, you will forget how much you paid for the ammo because of the exhilaration of shooting it.

Would be cool to see the american eagle fmjs or FN 198s tested next to these. Maybe the gold dots if they can be found and the price isn't obnoxious. I did expect a little more from the 5.7, but really fast lightweight rounds do tend to decelerate faster than heavier rounds so I really shouldn't be surprised. Excellent test.

I love 22 magnums. I use it quite a bit. I am interested in those 5.7s though and hope they start making them in pocket pistols. To me it’s kinda like a 22 magnum center fire. I love my 22 Hornet more than the 5.7, but There doesn’t seem to be much interest in making small handguns utilizing that superior cartridge.

I have the Ruger 57 bought it just for fun but with the 5.7 x 28 ammo prices I don't get to have much fun. I am thinking about selling the 57 and picking up one of the Rock Island Armory M1911 A1 XT 22 magnums. after seeing the Armscor performance I may do more than just think about selling my 57. at the very least I will be able to afford to shoot the XT 22 magnum more.

This is a great comparison video - The 5.7 doesn't make sense to me out of a rifle, I think it is a really cool round from a pistol but for rifles there are much better choices (.223 or 22 Mag). Both 223 and 22 mag have way more ammo choices and they are less expensive plus they perform better than 5.7 however, from a pistol the 5.7 is really fun and doesn't have anything that compares too closely besides maybe 22 mag but centerfire is always way more reliable than rimfire especially from a pistol. The TNT rounds are meant to do exactly what they did in the gel - explode like TNT.

Those Speer TNTs might work better out of a pistol and a tad lower velocity. You should try those in the PMR30. The 5.7 did exactly what it was designed to do. Tumble and yaw while dumping the energy into the target creating a very nasty wound but I’d like to see a bit more penetration out of those. A very good video comparison and proof that the 22 mag isn’t such a bad choice for self defense it’s only draw back is the rimfire which isn’t always as reliable as a center fire.

Great video! Good subject. The olʼ 22 magnum does pretty good in a fight that it didn't even know it was in. It's like the Five-Seven has an inferiority complex so it's always looking for someone to pick on to prove how tough it is. I've seen most of the tests on KZbin. The most embarrassing was The Military Arms Channel who offered a skewed test to cover for the Five-Sevenʼs mediocre performance. So, does the Five-Seven win the 22 caliber cage match against the venerable 22 mag. Of course it does. It's centerfire. It has versions with heavier projectiles. It gets faster velocities from shorter barrels. It works better in semi-automatic weapons. It's better in every way. But, is it better enough? Let's just say it shouldn't look back over its shoulder because the olʼ 22 mag is right there and coming up fast. And it should not start feeling too good about itself because it's nowhere near as good as the 5.56. I'll file it on the shelf next to the 30 super carry.

Yes, the Speer TNT is designed to do that. It is a bonded bullet, made exactly like a gold dot, but the jacket is much thinner. With your demonstration, it's obvious that factory 5.7x28mm doesn't really make sense vs factory 22WMR, just about regardless of the barrel length. My PMR 30 never has issues anymore. As reliable as a center fire.

It would be interesting if you really ran the test with R&R Weapon System 5.7x28 rounds, which are actual defense rounds and are getting closer to 525 foot pounds of energy out of PS90 barrel. The FN cilivan offerings of the 5.7 are really neutered down in performance in comparison to what FN offers police and the military, the R&R 5.7 ammo is a lot closer to Law enforcement and military capabilities. I also believe that Vanguard Outfitters offers a similar round called the Black Dragon Fang...again although the FN ammo is way easier to find its far from the best in what is out for 5.7 defense ammo.
