One thing I've learned from my many travels is that you have to be really careful assuming you 'like' a certain type of architecture. The beautiful Tuscan architecture can often become very depressing if not really done well as it can be awfully dark and sometimes remote, even for one who loves remote. The gorgeous hillside cities with cobble stone streets and wonderful palace apartments can feel claustrophobic after awhile, especially if you don't ensure that you have a larger terrace to actually get out from under the close in tightly packed buildings. Coastal communities all over Italy are beautiful but the architecture in the affordable areas is often times lacking. Much like the East coast of the United States, there's a lot of 'crap' with sea views because you're paying for the view and not the architecture. If architecture is important to you, you may not enjoy the coastal areas (unless you can afford a historic villa with sea view in the posh areas). If you love greenery, than perhaps Umbria and some areas of the North, perhaps Lazio area. If you like dry more desert conditions, perhaps Puglia. What I've found is that one almost needs multiple places in Italy to somewhat 'snowbird' your way around the beautiful country to enjoy all parts of it or incorporating a robust rental plan to live in various places. Living in just one place in Italy is almost a crime. And yes, that's the ultimate first world problem. Saluti!
