In Hebrew, we write 'Funk' as 'פאנק', and 'Punk' as 'פאנק'; So there's the shitty running gag of recommending punk to those who ask for funk albums, and the opposite. Not sure why i felt the need to comment this unnecessary info. Anyhow, great video as always

I haven't listened to a couple of these so I can't 100% argue. However, I think listening to James Brown - whether you go all in and pick up the 4-disc Star Time set, the Funk Power: 1970 compilation, or the original Sex Machine record - would be a great place to start. Hard to keep James Brown out of the discussion of where to begin with funk.

Hey, I loved the video, however just 2 let u know that Maggot Brain was not the first Funkadelic record. They released a self titled and Free Your Mind... before that record. Both albums are quite rugged and psychedelic releases, which where pretty much forgotten after the great output afterwards. I love Parliament-Funkadelic and adore all of there records. My favourite Funkadelic record is Let's Take it to the Stage (1975) and I've got a beautiful blood red transparent pressing of Mothership Connection. Thanks for suggesting these great records.

What a great list!! Can't disagree one iota, though, nice to see you acknowledge the great Betty Davis as essential. When it comes to Sly I personally prefer "Stand" but it's true that "There's a Riot" has had a more of an obvious impact on today's sounds so it's a great gateway to Sly's genius.

"Mothership Connection" was what got me into funk properly. Parliament and Funkadelic have a fair few classics in their catalogue, I feel like you can't go wrong listening to any of them, but "Mothership Connection" manages to trump them all. One of my favourites of all time. Love the Betty Davis shout also, I'm too bewildered that her legacy isn't as big as it really deserves. I'd argue her debut is just as good at getting someone into funk though.
@ThisBirdHasFlown

I think this is my third time returning to this video. First I listened to Betty Davis based off of this video. I quite like it. Then it helped me get into Parliament/Funkadelic, who I was already a bit familiar with before. Now I've spent about half a year obsessing over P-Funk and their many "solo" releases and am still journeying through them. I adore them and they've helped me get through an awful last few months. Funkadelic, Free Your Mind, Let's Take It to the Stage, Motor Booty Affair and Game, Dames and Guitar Thangs rank as some of my favourite albums ever, and I enjoy every single album I've heard. I hope you return. You make great videos.

I first got into funk and discovered Parliament-Funkadelic when i was 15. I was mostly listening to rock at the time and my favorite band up to that point had been Red Hot Chili Peppers. When we finally got an internet connection, i found out what their genre was called and what their influences were. I also got into Prince and became totally addicted to the grooves of funk, which then led me down a path of musical discovery. I got into reggae, dub, hip hop and breakbeat electronica among other stuff... which initially made me realize i had almost forgot about rock. So eventually i found my way back to where i started but this whole array of musical styles kept me open to pretty much anything. But still to this day, i just love grooves. Doesn't matter if it's jazz funk, trip hop, ska punk, groove metal, whatever. Also the fact that i play drums might play a part in this, of course.

@fabriciomendes4320
@fabriciomendes4320 6 жыл бұрын

Great video mate. You're verbose, knowledgeable and concise. Getting into Funkadelic now as my introduction to the genre. I was already familiar with their debut being a huge psychedelic fan which I adored to death, as well as the Maggot Brain song, but am now getting into their other albums. Totally forgot how much different material Parliament put out so I'll definitely be checking them out and Betty Davis sounds great too. Cheers!

Enjoyed youth Funk top five. You got me to buy, after years of thinking about it “super Fly. I agree with the titles you picked. Not what I would have picked but all great albums. I have to admit I have a huge music collection (over 3000 titles) but it has only been the last year that I dove into funk. Well I find I am having the same issues I had when I got into Jazz 30 years ago and that is every best Of list has the exact same records on it. Which is great because people agree those are where to start. But have you thought about doing an episode on lesser known release in the idiom of funk. As always I have enjoyed your show.

Great recommendations! I probably would have chosen the same records, with one exception... I think you should have included a James Brown record ("The Payback" would be the only flawless one), because he was such an important musician in that genre and developped such a unique funk-style. Together with his backing band the JBs, who are probably one of the three greatest black music band-formations in history (the others would be Parliament/Funkadelic and Africa 70'), so i think you should have included one of their records ("Food for Thought" for example). Still, i think to make a list of only 5 records is a hard job, so i don't blame you for anything. Its just my opinion ;-) cheers, Paul

There was a funk based musical style in the 1980s that has a prevalence of drum machines, synthesizers, syncopated bass lines, lots of jazzy chords, and soul singing. Some have the bass drum on Beats 1, the & of two, and three. Some employ a break beat style kick drum pattern. Others have the steady four on the floor. Is that style post disco? Boogie? Electro funk? Garage house? Proto house? 80s disco? Early NY garage music? Crystallized Soul house?

I couldn't help but notice two tiny mistakes: 1. Maggot Brain is Funkadelic's third album, not their first. 2. Superfly came out in 1972 (the same year as the accompanying film), not '71.

Good one! Thank you for creating more Funk fans. I love Funky music and Funk!!! I'm a huge Funk fan/lover..... I love rhythmic, groovy, funky music. This genre has so many older fans, not much teenagers/young adults. It's my favourite genre... I'm a 20 year old white man. lol. I personally prefer mole polished 70s 80s Funk compared to the P-Funk, Parliament/P-Funk is okay though, not bad! Some songs are good. I prefer more pop funk/polished funk I guess, that's the problem... When some old funkheads are snobby and have to praise P-Funk and be against newer Funk. In any case, it's all good :).

It’s just an utterly perfect album. Make my funk the P-Funk, indeed! I’m sooo glad you didn’t leave off “One Nation Under A Groove”, it’s essential funk. It’s insane how prolific George Clinton and the gang were during the 70s, man. I can’t tell you how much fun I’ve had tripping my balls off listening to “The Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)”, and laughing to the point of tears. The lyrics are as equally brilliant, as they are hilarious, and that guitar work is face melting goodness! I have one issue with this, though: you said that “Maggot Brain” (another masterpiece) was Funkadelic’s first album, but it’s actually their third album. “Funkadelic” and “Free Your Mind, And Your Ass Will Follow”, both proceeded “Maggot Brain”. Perhaps you’ve not heard those, thus the mistake? I promise you I’m correct on this, I own all 3 on vinyl. I’m actually sad to admit, I have not listened to that Betty Davis’ album, and considering that you said she introduced Miles to funk, thus helping ensure the production of some of my favorite albums of all time, means I will be listening to this album before the day is out. Thanks for including this, Olly! “There’s A Riot Going On” deserves to be here for it’s importance, though I have to admit I’ve never fallen in love with it, or any other Sly album for that matter (though I love many individual tracks). Perhaps it’s something I need to return to. Finally, “Superfly”, what an incredibly underrated album. Yes, it is a legendary album in the funk world, as well as soul world, and amongst many serious album lovers, but I feel like it really doesn’t get the credit it deserves. *Now,* as far as omissions, I get that there’s only room for five, but considering you left it off of the “5 albums to get you into fusion list”, I really am missing Herbie Hancock’s “Head Hunters” from this list. Even if it had been an honorable mention, I mean it is arguably the pinnacle of funk jamming, and arguably (certainly imo) the best jazz-funk album ever produced. Really, that’s my only qualm, though this is still great, and I’m still grateful as fuck that you made a “5 albums” vid for funk! As always, mate, love what you do! ✌🏼
