I first heard Filth and thought it was some late 90s NIN copycat shit, but then I learned it came out in 1983.. how the hell isn't this album more recognized? there is literally nothing this dirty and heavy sounding from 1983.. it's monumental

No Wave has to be one of my favorite genres of all time. I really just love lightning in a bottle creativity and the act of pushing a sound with little to no intention of doing something in attempt to make something accessible.

DNA on DNA is the definitive DNA release, so glad I own it. Of course, being a Swans devotee, I own and love all their stuff but what baffles me most is that I still can't land an Ascension copy. Branca was like a God especially to bands like Swans and Sonic Youth and for good measure.

Terrific video. You really do your homework. I would quibble though when you say No Wave wasn't inspired by many other existing bands outside Suicide. I think Captain Beefheart was a huge influence on James Chance and I think Velvet Underground's earlier, noisier jams on White Light White Heat and the Warhol record were very inspirational to that scene.
@deepcuts
@deepcuts 6 жыл бұрын
Some good points there Cassidy. I suppose I meant that there was no direct influences, but of course bands like Beefheart and VU would have been a huge influence to so many artists

Nice list. I would have added Rosa Yemen or Lizzy Mercier Descloux’s debut album instead of Swans not only to show that no wave also occurred outside of America (in France in this instance), but also as they were playing during the exact same late 70’s period and are a much more typical no wave example.

This seems like a good place to ask this question, does anyone else think that some of the most innovative but least talked about guitar work comes from bands who employ the duel lead style, bands like television, slint, women and even some stuff from the strokes, they are all so different but benifit so much from the duel lead stuff, just feel like people dont talk about it much

I could never really get no wave due to how rough things felt to me. However, I'm thankful that you've posted this video. Your videos always offer me a new vision in regards to a certain genre of music or a certain album, and I'm most definitely interested in checking these albums out now. Your videos are also stellar and I'd like to thank everything you've made. Very nicely done. The Birthday Party led me to Teenage Jesus and then the rest of No Wave in general. Now one of my favorite genres. Films I would recommend in relation to No Wave are Blank City, Downtown 81, and My Uncle Howard. The thing about No Wave is that it wasn't just music, it was all forms of art encompassing each other.

Filth is such a visionary album. Literally nothing else sounded like it, and it still sounds like nothing else in the world. It's terrible that it doesn't garner tremendous recognition and acclaim, but I have a theory on why that is. Back in 1983, hearing an album like Filth would have been the most confusing thing in the world. Almost no one knew what the hell to make of it. Is it rock? Punk? Metal? And how the fuck are we supposed to listen to it? I know that the first time I listened to it, I didn't get it at all. I was really confused as to what I was listening to. It's so heavy, angular, repetitive and squalid, and it has the bare minimum of structure. It's amorphous craft is why it predates many other innovators. This album single-handedly pioneered industrial metal, sludge metal, noise metal, experimental metal, grindcore, and even grunge. Industrial metal because it was 5 years before Godflesh and Ministry did it. Sludge metal because it was before the likes of Black Flag and Melvins. Noise metal because it was before Today is the Day. Experimental metal because it was 4 years before Celtic Frost released Into the Pandemonium. Grindcore because it predates the likes of Siege and Napalm Death. And grunge because it was before Green River released their debut EP in 1985. It's insane how groundbreaking Filth was and still is. It deserves all the credit and love that the world could possibly give it.

a notable non-record release is the movie downtown 81, which is very no wave centric but still offers a wider scope of how intertwined the scene was in new york, with the punk and new wave movements running close to no wave as well as the boom of new young artists like basquiat in manhattan.

I can hear a lot of Glenn Branca's sound in the Red Crayola's album "Soldier Talk" recorded a few years earlier - I'm confident he was influenced by this great and underrated texan band which was probably technically more advanced to be listed as No Wave (and the songs are more eclectic)...

Some good choices, I bought the majority of them on vinyl back when they first came out and still have them, and also bought the CDs once they were available as well. I also recall that back in the day, I went to a theater that was showing what I think was billed as a "punk" collection of film shorts. Not sure what it was called, but I've looked for it since and haven't been able to find it again. It had a short by Contortions/James White & the blacks, that was a professional studio filmed segment of the later JW&B version of Contort Yourself-- it was amazingly great, I wish I could find it again...

Another great guide to this music and the art scene surrounding it is Jack Sargeant's book Deathtripping. I spent years following up all the threads in it and chasing down this or that artist, band, or filmmaker. I actually had to buy a second copy of it because the first was so worn out it fell apart.

As an extra listen to Sonic Youth's first album/EP, I think it qualifies as No Wave

Confusion is Sex (their first studio album from 1983) is definitely a no wave album. The eponymous EP from 1981 is a more accessible version of the genre, some people say it has post-punk undertones. But I love both records ;)

An album that has always give me some No Wave vibes without been actually from that genre is Possession by God, a band with Justin Broadrick of Godflesh, Kevin Martin aka The Bug and some production from John Zorn (Naked City)

I fucking LOVE “Buy”, and James Chance’s music in general, so yeah, I’m very glad, but completely unsurprised, to see that album here! The only other album I’m not surprised to see here is “Filth”, which I figured you’d include given your love for Swans (don’t get me wrong, it deserves to be here). This Glen Branca guy, I’ve never heard of, but it sounds extremely intriguing! Ten minute + no wave freak outs? Yes, please! I trust your judgement on this one, whether it’s actually no wave or not, so I’ll be tracking this down for sure. Thanks! The others two here I’ve not listened to, but I’ve heard of.. if I remember correctly, they were recommended to me by the same friend who turned me on to James Chance’s genius. Anyway, I’m definitely going to try to find that compilation on Spotify and/or iTunes before the sun sets since Eno has his fingerprints on that shit, and mark Teenage Jesus down as something to check out soon.. One band I half expected to see here was Sonic Youth, specifically the album “Bad Moon Rising”. I realize most of their music wasn’t true no wave, but their albums pre “Evol” were fully no wave. So, you didn’t include them here, but I’m guessing you’re a fan, yes? Will we ever get a video on the discography? PLEEEAAASSSEEEE?!?!? Anyway, thanks as always, Oliver! I’ve been waiting for this one for a long time, and it’s exceeded expectations and given me some unheard music to discover! ✌🏼🙏🏼

deep cuts Haha, you do you, boo. I was just joking with the Sonic Youth mania, but yeah, I’ll be looking forward to that. I’m VERY grateful to you for including Branca in that list btw. I found “The Ascension” on KZbin, and it’s absolutely amazing. Can’t believe that such a great album from the late 70s (a period of music that includes possibly the majority of my favorite albums) had gone under my radar, not to mention all the other great work I’ve found from him on Spotify. I look forward to immersing myself in his guitars. Thank you! 🙏🏼✌🏼

Swans are post no wave. They are an inspired by just like sonic youth...suicide’s nihilistic lyrics paint no wave well. Deserve a spot. Also TJ&J were great but I’d put mars ahead of them, Lydia lunch would put them ahead as well. Strongly agree with he Branca inclusion though

I have the compilation album "No Wave To Go," which is probably not No Wave... ...but the LP itself was physically visually stunning. I'm not aware of many LPs that have embedded photos / artwork. (I was googling that and ended up here.)

No mention of Bill Laswell/Material/Massacre/Golden Palominos. I might have switched out Swans for something Laswell related.

Hey man! Awesome Video! Have you ever checked out the documentary "Kill Your Idols?" It used to be on Netflix... It's a fairly basic introduction to the No-Wave scene, but there's some pretty great footage in it as well.
