Humans have been responsible for extinctions in the past, and for the low populations of many endangered animals. But there are also a lot of humans determined to amend our harmful actions and to bring back the organisms that have had to suffer because of us. In the spirit of Earth Day, here are 5 animals we've saved from extinction.

The best thing that has happened is the recent Asian prosperity boom giving Asians the ability to get real & powerful working meds rather than traditional guesswork medicine. Some of the stuff they use really is proven to work but then there is a lot more which is just a scam, like horns which are either the same stuff as finger nails or enamel as in teeth, either way not miraculous drugs at all.

Lord Howe island stick insect Whooping cranes Panda Nail tail wallaby Chatham island robin California condor Mauritius kestrel Round island ( the entire ecosystem) Takahe Southern right whale Blue iguana Reunion coffee plant ( it's not an animal but it's a pretty cool story) Seychelles tortoises Pigmy hog Western short necked tortoise Sadly these are just specks of brightness in the massive sea of the Anthropocene extinction, but we can live in hope. [I've been involved with wildlife conservation for many years , it's a depressing business most of the time ]

For several years now, I've been getting my (adult) sister a NWF plushie as one of her Christmas presents. She's an adult but LOVES stuffed toys. Both of us like the fact that the money goes where most needed, so that the cuter animals don't get all the attention. She usually wants really odd ones (her first one was a bat, one's an octopus, etc.), but one year I convinced her to let me buy her a red wolf toy. So few people know about the red wolf and it is in such dire need of help. Well, all that to say, it's super nice to find someone else who loves those sorts of things :) (P. S. I know this comment is 5 years old, but I just had to say something) :)

Ben G Thomas, The humpbacks were directly targeted and so could be "untargeted". Other species at risk are not the victims of intentional harm but are secondary or tertiary victims of changes caused by humans. These changes are, perhaps, not seen as harmful (from the limited viewpoint of humans anyway). We don't "know" we are harming them because we do know we aren't trying to harm them (excepting bald eagles). We need to pay more attention to other life forms and that's pretty hard to do. It like asking Americans to pay more attention to news from other countries, they (we) are too filled up with news from the home front.

Can I just, well done. You took the criticism of your mispronouciation of Maori in another Video, and made a real effort to pronounce it more correctly. It was still slightly off, but only in a way a Kiwi would hear. I am a bit sad though that this list mainly concentrated on charismatic megafauna. I love the Kakapo, but I do feel the rescue of the Black Robin of New Zealand a much more impressive feat of saving an animal from extinction. The Black Robin was down to 5 individuals, with only one of those being a female. They now number around 600, all descended from that one female.

Many were poached during the 80s and 90s for the pet trade causing many different species to tank in population because they grow very slowly. They thankfully are now protected and have rebounded because they are easy to breed.

In fifth grade, one of our projects was about endangered animals. We had to choose 5 from a provided list (this was in 1995 or '96), and then research in the library and make a little booklet. Two of my choices were the red wolf (still in dire peril) and the helmeted honeyeater (which I think is doing better). I am happy to see the golden lion tamarin on this list ... that was one of the choices. I only remember because a girl in class couldn't find anything about it in the library XD

Douglas Adams, the author of hitch hikers guide to the galaxy. did a a book on endangered animals and one of them was the kakapo. at the time he did the book the kakapo looked like it had had it same as the Yangzi river dolphin. that fully, unlike the dolphin the kakapo seems to be holding on.

For reference, before man arrived in New Zealand, the only mammal present was a fruit bat. NZ is the only island group ever to be dominated by birds who filled every niche of the ecosystem. Case and point: Haast Eagle vs Giant Moa

I needed this video- my recent interest in paleobiology has come with a growing hatred for what humanity has done to wildlife, so this is a welcome parting from the "top 10 animals we've made extinct"that are so prevalent.

Yeah, when I made one of those videos a while ago it was suggested to me that I should do a more positive video like this as well. It's important to realise the destruction we've caused, but also important to understand that there are many people trying to help and that we can save species too.

We'll definitely consider making another part, as you say there are certainly many other animals that are recovering from a human-induced near extinction.

In New Zealand we also have a bird called the Takahe that looks like a fat dopey pukeko. It was thought to be extinct, until a farmer found a breeding pair and had his chickens raise their eggs away from predators. Now they are still really rare with only a couple hundred breeding pairs but sightly more organized conservation it's young the numbers

Another species that has come back from near extinction is the saltwater crocodile, Crocodylus porosus. By the time that hunting was banned in the early 1970's in Australia they were racing toward extinction, and in less than 50 years their populations have bounced back to the point where they are more numerous now than they have ever been. A lot of their survival is credited to intact habitat and the protections of CITES, as they are a very commercial species and is farmed commercially for leathers and meat. C. porosus is still vulnerable throughout the parts of the rest it's range, but in Australia they are at the point where culling is definitely a viable option. Interestingly, the Australian population has been speculated to be a distinct species from the populations in India and SE Asia based on morphological characters such as larger head and shorter tails, but this could be attributed changes due to ageing. Anyway, another great video.

Ironically there was a recent study that found humpback whales are not singing as much anymore because there is too much competition between males. It makes me wonder if they only started singing because the low population made it harder to find other whales.

It's important to remember that any of these animals wouldn't have been endangered in the first place if humans didn't kill them or destroy their habitants. So even though it's great that the humans have managed to bring them back, humans were still responsible for the situation at all

For future reference, when saying Maori, it’s similar to “Maui” with an R. Good try though. Interesting fact: NZ also has a ground-dwelling bat, and nearly-flightless (after it’s eaten, because it’s so greedy) pigeon... Tbh, most of our native wildlife are either flightless or weird XD Usually both XD (Still love ‘em though)

When zoos clearly can do a lot of good, I just don’t get why some people get so bent out of shape about them. I’m sorry, but you’re ignoring the facts if you act like ALL zoos are bad. Yes, some zoos are pretty bad but there’s plenty more that care about their animals and make a difference in the world!
