In ancient Greece it was big pride to die during a battle. This is why people were fearless, they wanted their names to be written in history! And they managed to do it. I am really proud to be Greek

***** Why do you even freaking care? Are you jealous because your ancestors didn't do anything that could make you proud? So fucking what man theres so much things going on in the world right now and you're caring about Greeks who are proud of their culture. Why don't you go to videos about turkish/albanian whatever culture? You will see people talking the same way about their country.

this practice had a purpose it was to teach the child about stealth and covert to move without being seen or heard so when they are in a war the soldier can walk up to the enemy in silence and kill them or to scout the area in front of the army for enemy soldiers

'Return with your shield, or die on it.' This relates to the significance of the shield in Spartan warfare and as such, losing the shield at all was another huge disgrace. Not because it was valuable, but because the shield was used to protect other Spartans, as well as the wielder. Also, Spartans caught stealing wouldn't be flogged because they committed a crime, but because they had been caught.
@jsphlml
@jsphlml 9 жыл бұрын
Coming home without your shield was disgraceful because typically you would if you were retreating you would drop your shield to run faster. I believe another example was coming home without blood on your blade.

TheDanzomanzo In the movie it said your shield protected the soldier on your left, just like the phalanx. I also thought it said in the movie it went...1 sword, 2 shield, 3 spear. Sure was a tough life, but you'd have a strong inner circle of citizens. Seems like every other person was a slave. Sounds like early Greek to me.

Number 6: Spartans were kidnapped at age 6, replaced with a clone designed to die, so their families would think their child died, meanwhile, the UNSC trained the Spartans hard, and augmented their bodies, a process which would kill some, disable some, while only a handful survived. They would then be given armour, and sent on suicide missions at age 15, then through the rest of their life, they-wait a minute, this is the wrong type of Spartan.

Isn't it hillarious when someone calls Spartans "barbaric" ? 'Cause, you know, the original meaning of the word... !
@Skerdy
@Skerdy 8 жыл бұрын
+Antonis Rountas Lol, yeah, thinking about it you're right... although, really, they *were* barbaric, that was one of my major problems with 300: I know history enough to say with conviction that Spartans were the Original Arseholes! I mean, I find it difficult to get engaged with the fate of some warriors from the Ancient Greece version of Nazi Germany. Persia was a much more free country than Sparta ever was or even wanted to be, and in the end they faded away 'cause they were so racist and they culled their population so much that they become irrelevant and no one gave a fuck about them anymore... ah, karma is a wonderful thing.

+Skerdy Nazi.? Spartans? you r confused my friend spartans did not invade in 10 foreign countries and killed so many people kids and women mostly.... Spartans was the best fighting machine for at least 500 years. If a Spartan was going to kill children's instead of real warriors he would prefer to kill him self rather to disgrace his shield and sword. Don't be so ignorant think first and read many books of history to have an opinion about other people's history. I m guessing you are English and you are telling this things about spartans? do you know what your people have done in cyprus?

Barbaric meant.. barbaric. The saying was "all non-Greeks are barbaric", so unless they were going for a tautology "non-Greek" was the last thing they meant. The title is at the very least provocative; although everything could be construed as civilization, and therefore no society can ever be truly called barbaric, solutions derived from rational thinking and empirical knowledge are far more sophisticated than those stemming from morality and religion. What the Spartans did may have been cruel, but it worked, and that's all they were going for. So, pragmatic and devious, yes, barbaric and stupid, no.
@Skerdy
@Skerdy 8 жыл бұрын
Ioannis Giannakaras I think I have to disagree with that. First, your point about the meaning of the word. Obviously you know (maybe unconsciously although you might not know the terms) the difference between *denotation* and *connotation*. Denotation is the literal (vocabulary) meaning of the word. Connotation is the idea and feelings associated with it: e.g. the "white dove" is just a bird, but the ideas of peace and love etc. cannot be denied when we mention the bird. That's why you're not going to see a horror movie or book with white doves to create suspence but you're going to a see a lot with crows... even, if you think about it, they are pretty similar birds. Same thing with, barbaric: it might have meant "non-Greek", but even in Roman times it had the connotation of "uncivilized behaviour", in fact, we talk now about barbaric behaviour when we talk about a certain type of behaviour and that has nothing to do with ethnicity... and that brings me to your second point, which was, and I quote: " So, pragmatic and devious, yes, barbaric and stupid, no." Really? How do you know? The only thing we know for sure about Sparta was that they were very religious, they despised other Greeks (especially the "effeminate" Athenians and the very much feared and enslaved Heliots) and anyone who wasn't Spartan, they despised philosophy, they despised knowledge beyond being able to read enough to comprehend orders, they despised innovation (they used the same identical tactics of old without a change, ever: they mocked the Athenians for using archers and for using their ships and they kept using the old lances even when Macedonians came up with a new version of the phalanx), they despised even work: everything in Sparta was done by Heliots, Spartans only trained! In fact, can you point me out *ONE* single thing they built who survived? One single Spartan heritage? One single invention? One single new idea? No, you cannot, because they didn't build, or invent or even think: they lived to kill and that's the only thing they did... *for centuries*. And you are telling me we cannot call these people "barbaric and stupid" because they spoke Greek?! You don't say?!
@InteriorGaming
@InteriorGaming 7 жыл бұрын
But they did enslave and terrorize their own neighbors. Persia was famous for letting the conquered nations do whatever they wanted, as long as they paid tribute. Persia wasn't actually the "bad guy". The Spartans were brutal as hell. All of the above said, I still love the Spartan ideals.

Afonso Martins homosexuality was punishable by death or exile in Ancient Sparta. Look up the “Laws of Lycurgus” and how the Ephors usurped power from the two Spartan kings. Lycurgus was a quasi-legendary figure that reshaped the society of Lacedaemon (Sparta). His laws, which Spartan society was based upon, deemed homosexuality illegal. There was probably still homosexuals in Sparta but they were rare because... it was illegal, and the punishment was severe.

The spartan way of life was pretty impressive, no doubt about that. But I wonder if this militarism-oriented culture wasn't what ended up making Sparta vanish on the trails of human history. Look at the athenians: they focused on education, culture, science... and their city lasted 'til nowadays. Athens is the capital city of Greece.

War/military culture was the major concept in the old days But later died off as the world wanted to progress in a peaceful positive manner by only focusing on education, fixing and discovering the worlds problems and secrets to everyday life But the term still remains today - "Only the strong survive" as in mentally and physically
@yurisucupira

+FmA Troopah But, you see, athenians seemed to already know this since those old days, so many centuries ago, thus they focused on education, culture, science et cetera. They focused on what we focus nowadays, while spartans literally lived for war, being ready to fight anytime.

@fmatroopah9674 8 жыл бұрын
+Yuri Sucupira yes they did, there discoveries and achievements has helped a lot of problems today and things can be taught from what they recorded back then I'm not saying military culture is inefficient, because we definitely need it to defend our country and to help allies Like how we do now But we don't need a military for everything because it doesn't deal with every concept of today
@yurisucupira
@yurisucupira 8 жыл бұрын
FmA Troopah Yup, I too believe that having some armed forces is necessary. Even Iceland, which is a very peaceful country and does not have a standing army, has its coast guard and a very small group of 3 military ships and airplanes "just in case". I served myself as a staff sergeant in the air force for 8 years. But this is nowadays' world, where armed forces, though necessary, are only one part of society (just like athenians had their armed forces but is was only part of their society, I mean, they also had education, philosophy etc. and focused on these things). I'm under the strong impression that if spartans had paid more attention to the athenian way of life they would've resisted through the trails of history, too. When you focus only on military training and thus become e.g. the one who has the best spear army or the best army of archers on the planet, you might succeed for a while, but in the meantime your enemy e.g. develops more advanced weapons and then later defeats you anyway, thus you vanish and unfortunately all the military discipline and culture you developed is probably lost, too, which I believe is a pity. Anyway, that's how things happened and there's no going back. It would be intersting if Spart was still a standing (though contemporary) city. Would probably be one of the most visited places on Greece.

UndeadCookieMonster Actually, the Spartans were extremely cautious when going to war. Athens on the other hand often rushed into war. While caution is definitely not the same as cowardice, Sparta and Athens both had their share of humiliating defeats like Sphactiria and The siege of Syracuse respectively. Sparta was even defeated by a weaker state than Athens: Thebes.

As I said before in a previous blog, the two men who missed out on the battle of Thermopylae one did indeed hang himself, the other did redeem himself as a Spartan, but was not conveyed honors but at least his family did not suffer a lifetime of disgrace. The reason is he recklessly charged the enemy formation and did not follow commands to fight alongside his men as is Spartan custom to fight as a collective unit. He died in the battle of Plataea against the Persian army. On a side note, Spartan children who were not considered suitable were often picked up and raised by the Helots, the very same people that made Spartan society function.

Sparta actually treated it's women better than it's men! they thought logically, treat women well, and the women will give birth to good sons. In other parts of Greece at the time women were treated as little more than the property of men, so being a Spartan woman was actually very good for the times!. They had the logical thought that everyone comes from women, and treated women well.

thewr0ngchild she is right. in Athens, the city state commonly looked to as the example democracy, progressiveness and egalitarianism, women were actually treated like shit. They had no property rights, no inheritance, they couldn't vote, they couldn't speak in courts of law, the only jobs they were allowed to do was cook and wash clothes they couldn't have an actual craft or trade like pottery or artisanry. Some of the most famous Athenian playwrights commonly depicted women in their stories as duplicitous, stupid, horny or sex-obsessed, untrustworthy and selfish. In Sparta however, the wives were basically trusted to handle the financial affairs of the household because the men were usually on campaign or living in the barracks a lot. Women had to manage the household slaves, sell the crops or cattle and buy whatever grain or supplies were needed. Because every Spartan was given a plot of land to farm by the state, that meant every Spartan wife had quite a bit of responsibility. It's also a myth that Spartans were poor. Although they lived simple lives, most spartans were actually quite wealthy but in that society it was considered distasteful to live a flashy, wealthy lifestyle. Women were given a lot more respect and although they were not part of the Gerousia and could not actually vote on the laws of the city, they did "have a vote" not a literal one, but meaning they "had a say" in virtually all other aspects of Spartan life.

We are here because people had to be brave and strong. Kudos to the Spartans ,and all those who actually fought to get us here , I'm guessing our legacy to the future generations will be tons and tons of plastic machines X boxes and playstations full of imaginary monsters , no one will be able to explain , sad world indeed

Hell Spartan woman had the honor to have their name on a grave stone if they died during childbirth. It sounds like they were popping children left and right, especially since citizenship was only for actual spartan people from bloodlines and you could only serve if you were a citizen.

El Navarjo It wasn't the slaves and lack of farming that was the issue. It was the petty wars between city-states. The Peloponnesian war ended with Sparta winning and defeating Athens, but every city-state was extremely weak due to it. Spartans basically made themselves miserable by being obsessed with war and made the lower castes miserable by terrorizing them. Then because they had mistreated the lower castes were forced to continually prepare for them to revolts. That's awful not badass. Like ancient North Korea

I'm not saying it wasn't, but that sort of treatment wasn't as disgusting as it is now days. That's what made Sparta such a formidable fighting force

It is more likely true. Most Greek states practiced homosexuality and the Spartans among a few other city-states practiced pedophilia.

+Timur the Lame Wrong, while the Spartans accepted strong relationships amongst adult men and youthful boys, pedophilia or "pederasty" as it was called back then, was considered an abomination. This was said by Xenophon.

+Alexandros grivas In Spartan culture and Greek culture in general, homosexuality did exist, although the "passive" male was usually subject to social stigma. This was because being the "passive" member was related with femininity and "being a woman", which obviously wasn't seen as very "manly".

Another fun fact, they actually weren't very intelligent. Their military success was mostly limited to only land battles, and they weren't able to think about warfare in terms of tactics that weren't conventional. Their reign came to an end when their opponents just started arranging their troops differently in land battles. That's all it took to defeat the Spartans.

sorry but you dont know for what you talking about. After the peloponisian war it start slowly the decline because of the many victorious wars. Victorious but very costly in humans (Spartan men). In 280 bc they were only 2000 in the army and less than a 1000 in Roman invesion 100 years after. 2. The doric race is famous for the simplicity and not for stupidity 3. As for the adoption in the battle tactics read the Polyaenus’ Strategemata

Their tactics were one dimensional. They believed in using simple Best Man on the Right tactics so much, and they refused using light infantry so much, that suggesting they were prudent tacticians is dead wrong.

Fenris17 Best man on the right tactics? Lol those aren't really tactics.... Thats a formation lol. You don't call a football or hockey line tactics... You honestly think spartans just walked forward swinging their swords hoping to over power everyone? Hell fucking no, they were intelligent people like anyone and everyone else, the difference is that they specifically built their nation around their military, and for good reason.
