How to edit video // Do you want to know how to edit videos better? Video editing can seem like daunting task if you are just starting out. So here we go over 5 basic principles of video editing to help get you started. These include avoiding jump cuts, using b-roll, cutting on motion, the 180 degree rule, and using motivated shots. As a bonus we also discuss how the direction of motion can influence how people perceive your video. These principles are based on the idea that unintentionally jarring elements can come across as mistakes to your audience and take them out of the experience. We hope these will help you in your next production.

The reason why we see left to right as going forward and right to left as backwards is because of our language! if your language is written left to right (such as English) that's why you experience that effect. Personally I'm from Iran and we write Persian (our language) from right to left! I'm not sure if that effect gonna work backwards! but still, interesting subject to discuses and it's just an idea! doesn't mean it works or anything! but so many editing books and masters suggest to maintain the direction of the screen. if the character was going left when he was going to office, he/she should be going right when going back home.

That's so interesting Farzad, thank you! It can be so easy to forget the different influencing factors of why we think the way we do. That's amazing to think about! Thank you for bringing it up.

Interestingly, I was thinking of the same comments in my mind as I was watching this video and later came across your view point of 'language'. Awesome! To further your thoughts my take is that this is also comes down to decision making (Director / DOP) where one releases their final film video with geographical location in mind. Since, in many muslim countries the languages is written from Right to left oppose to Left to Right. And Right hand is respected over the left hand for certain important values. Similarly, If you noticed The Matrix trilogies had the themes of words/codes falling in raining notion. (Common with the Asian language). There were some shots with Tilt mixed with motivational shots leading into deeper actions. Jordan: Great video there with plenty of good examples. I'd like to know, The point where the Actor 'Hits their' mark and then Turns back to head walking Right - Couldn't the actor Hit the 2nd Rule of 3rd composition point then Turn back instead? i.e: Couldn't that draw the audience in more 'deeper connectivity'? Emphasising the Regret emotion. If you know what I mean - just wondering...

The last tip about time going from left to right In order of present to future depends on the first language you have, like how right to left writing script languages typically do the reverse like arabic. And up to down for chinese.

Is there any good money in video editing? Would really like to hear from someone who has tried or is currently doing it.
@MotionArrayTutorials
@MotionArrayTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
Only making money video editing? It's for sure possible but it depends on the route that you want to take (like being a video editor in a company, doing it freelance, etc). I've personally found that there's a lot more jobs (at least in my city) doing video production as a whole (filming and editing). But you can certainly find jobs being solely an editor for a larger company, thought it would depend more on your city and part of the world. Freelancing there's great options like fiver or upwork which will let you find people who just need editing work done, but you'll have to get around some hurdles like transferring large video files. Long story short there's absolutely good money in it. It just might look a little different depending on your needs and location.

Our personal thoughts? It feels like it's subtly telling you he's making a bad decision by showing him running to the left of screen. Almost like it's telling you he's running the wrong way. Then it's a payoff and feels funny when your intuition about that feeling was proven right. Great question! We never noticed that before!

@@MotionArrayTutorials That makes a lot of sense. The rule seems like it's got to be B.S., but I know that it's supported empirically, so I can't argue with it. ^_^ An interesting experiment would be to show it to some people as it is and show others with the action reversed, to compare the reactions. Thanks!
