@ 7:30 Simple formula to find power is, power in watts (P) = Current in Amps (I) multiplied by voltage (V). So if it's 120 volt, and says 5 amps, then that drill will pull 600 watts from the wall. OR, if you don't know how much current it will pull from the wall, then divide watts over voltage to determine current in amps: 600 / 120 = 5 amps. Hope this helps.
@deucedeuce15722 ай бұрын
That's assuming the invertor can handle it too though. That's not always the case. Many adapters only have one - and one + lead also, which can significantly reduce the max power capacity.
@exgenicaАй бұрын
...but if one is using an inverter to supply power to a tool, the watts consumed by the tool will be lower than the watts consumed by the tool + inverter as the inverter introduces energy losses due to conversion inefficiency. Inverters can cause a loss of anywhere from only a few percent up to 15-20%, depending on design and parts used. In _general_ modern inverters are far more efficient than older units...but it's not guaranteed.

Dewalt sells those USB adapters too. The new one actually can do 100w PD and can be used to charge the battery if connected to a PD capable laptop brick. And it has a belt clip too. Dewalt also has a 1800w inverter that takes four batteries. With that you can run literally anything.

Awesome vid. I am seriously considering using one of the adapters with the step down converter to make a 12V ammo can power box since i already have a few Dewalt tools. Def looking at the 20V-18V adapter as well as the first Usb socket adapter.
@jasonbroom71472 ай бұрын
I bought a power battery adapter than just puts out two leads to work with. I wired mine to a buck converter that is adjustable. It lets me dial down the 18v DC output of the battery to deliver 3 volts. The bubble-maker on my Frabill insulated minner bucket draws 3v @ .5 amps...1.5 watts. Even a small, 2ah, 18v drill battery has 36 watt-hours (amps * volts). If you divide 36 watt-hours by 1.5 watts you get 24 hours. (Conversion from 18v to 3v uses some power, so actual run time is closer to 20 hours). This means you can run the bubbler on your bait bucket for a whole weekend with 2 or 3 drill batteries.

Be careful with some of the off brand adapters and inverters. They don't all have battery protection to prevent draining below safe levels and it will kill your battery. I killed one of my 4ah batteries with an adapter, and left it attached to an impact driver for a few weeks on the bench. When i went to use it, the battery was dead, and wouldn't take a charge. It pulled the 20v battery below 2v, and lithium batteries don't take kindly to that level of drain.

Beware of the counterfeit DeWalt adapters to run your older 18V DeWalt tools on their newer 20 volt batteries. The genuine DeWalt adapters work fine. I unknowingly bought two counterfeit ones on Fleabay, and all the magic smoke leaked out of 'em! You can even get a DeWalt adapter to fit those little handheld Dyson vacuums. I've got DeWalt's bigass 15 Ah battery hanging on one of those, and it works great.
@K2teknik.2 ай бұрын
18 and 20 volts batteries are the same, they both consist of 5 battery cells in serial connection, at their rated cell voltage at 3.7 volt that is 18.5 volt, at full rated charge for the cells at 4.2 volt that is 21 volt, so 20 volt battery packs is just 18 volts packs that had been around the marketing department.

But, I saw that all I had for a form of a energy to possibly jump that truck battery, even knowing the voltage didn’t match and nor any other properties to a car battery, I tried it anyway lol. I put that copper wire I stripped on the truck, then quickly on the drill battery and turned that key! BAM! Running truck, did spark once, and that drill battery sure got hot quick. But hey, be mindful and thankful when things work out when in a jam right lol. Glad it worked for you also bud. Take care! Oh yeah..did I mention it was a harbor freight battery! 👍🏻

The adapter doesn't work too charge because you only have the output plugs on it. These are either side of the series connected cells inside the battery. The charger is looking for the other contacts that give it the voltages of each cell so that it can balance charge them for a healthy pack.

@turdferguson53002 ай бұрын
@@jonjacobjingleheimerschmid3798 You're probably right, I missed it. I worked with the battery tools in the early 90s and they were terrible. They probably have improved over the years but when the battery dies you may as well buy a new tool. I don't care for that. Everything I own fits that small generator, if I want it in the boat, on the farm, or at home it's ready and quiet. Dad had a DeWalt battery drill before he died, I have it but not crazy about it. I worked in industrial heating & air where we used tools and they didn't cut it. Possibly for a private home owner they would be ok? Have a good weekend.
@ernestgalvan90372 ай бұрын
@@turdferguson5300…uh, yeah. Thirty years have passed since you used cordless, and yeah, they have advanced A LOT. I don’t need to haul around a 30-50 pound generator with its attendant gas tank and oil can. I don’t need to haul around 50-100 foot extension cords. I can use them in the attic, on the roof, up a ladder, out in the back of my 6-acre lot, up in the trees, under my car,etc. If I’m doing electrical repairs in my bedroom and I need to cut the power to the second floor, no problem… battery drill and battery work-light… no extensions needed. Yeah, thirty years ago, the brushed motors and simple controllers and Ni-Cad batteries were crap. Modern (2023-2024) BLDC motors and controller electronics and Li-Ion chemistry are great. Do I still use my Dad’s circa 1962 1/2” corded drill. On occasion, perhaps every two years. Mostly to connect to his memory.
@nunya95552 ай бұрын
@turdferguson5300 . I hear ya, but my DeWalt 1/2 drive 20 volt impact will take lug nuts off a semi truck. I have done it, that's not hyperbole. There does not exist one that plugs into a 110v outlet that will do that, that I have found. I have a wall plug in DeWalt 1/2 impact that is more useless than udders on a boar hog! It wouldn't take lug nuts off of a power wheels! So I would need a 1/2 air impact, hose, large air compressor with a lot of cfm, and a really large 6k or 8k generator to run the compressor just to bust a semi nut. Lithium batteries have amazing power storage density! Don't misunderstand me, I love both of my Champion 2200 linkable invertor generators. Sometimes gas will not be available. Battery power can be very practical.

here's a cool trick i do, slightly off topic, but still power/battery related. instead of paying for a portable ac power inverter pack thing, i will go to local scrap yard, and they got a whole area for UPSs, no not the shipper. this are power backup units for typically computers and such, but they will power just about anything like any inverter, but it has its own battery that is maintained, but peeps always junk them cuz the batts go bad after so many years, they either dont know you can even change them, or its to expensive to replace. so get some of them units, they are mostly 12v, but bigger ones are 24, or even 48. for starting out, get a 12v unit, super cheap, then if you have any 12v battery, drill or car battery, connect that instead of the factory sealed lead acid. this will let you run higher loads and for WAYYYY longer. i had a few of these able to run half my house for a day at a time, on just 3 batteries. nothing 240v th0., but tvs, computers, fridge, etc. even if you have an old car batt that dont really hold a good charge or even reliably start a car, it would still be better or at least equal to the factory battery that came with it. so there ya go. i also got many units for free in the computer repair sector, many peeps didn't want to bother with a replacment battery and just wanted it gone, so most i got for free, but did get a really nice server grade apc unit at the yard for only the cost of its scrap weight. heheh it had to be worth 250$ but no one even knew what it was. so ya there ya go, for more detailed info you can google this, its somewhat common for diy'ers to do. /end long @ss post

Nice Video, but a few things,.... Can't charge cause it's only got 2 of the five connections. The USB adapter, careful, most will drain the battery below the Li-Ion specifications which makes it harder to charge them back up. Charging a battery from another battery results in a loss of power. Going from 20v to 5v the difference is usually loss to heat going through a linear voltage regulator.

Do you think it could run a internet modem or router? For a little bit maybe just a little power outage?
@kaboom46792 ай бұрын
They should work fine , although , if the inverters are square wave or modified sine wave , they could damage the modem . And alternative would be to use the DC DC converter to step it down to 12 volts from whatever the battery is , then , use a separate small pure sine inverter . I keep a big deep cycle and a massive old school 1800 watt pure sine inverter on a cart for the same purpose ..it runs the TV , gateway , printer , and will still keep the laptop and phones charged .

Modems only pull 6 - 15 watts that's not very much .

I did on my modem for 8 hours during Helene. Suffered no damage to the modem that I could determine. We were blessed that our damage wasn't catastrophic as other sections in the South.

If you need to run a corded drill off of your cordless drill battery ; you’re missing tools and need a lock ! However, using the inverter to power a roto tool makes sense because most DC Dremels are weak ! A corded AC tool is then portable !

I've got a portable diesel heater that needs a 12v DC power source. Would that step down adapter be ideal for that?

@dustinwade3484 it should be , how many watts does your heater draw ?

Do they have battery splitters? Then you could hook 4 batteries to the 2 battery inverter and stuff like that. I'm surprised it only holds two batteries though. For its size, it should hold 4 to start with. Then you could do 8 with 4 splitters if they fit. Could be 600 to 1200 watts+.
