Here are the most valuable tips for those new to Sim Racing (Assetto Corsa, Project CARS, Gran Turismo Sport):
1) Invest in a wheel if you can (buy used and save $$$)
2) Start with a fast but predictable car (Lotus 2-Eleven GT4 or Tatuus FA-01)
3) "Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast" (keep your driving smooth)
4) "Outside, inside, outside" (learn and practice the fastest route through a corner)
5) Have fun! (run 100 laps in a car and track setup you love)

Why is it that I can't find a single video explaining what the road markers on the track mean like the meter markers that pop up really fast before a turn or tree lines or red and white lines or anything. All this basic crap talked about in this vid is common sense that everyone knows. What's not are the markers; otherwise, this vid is click bait!
@smudge0356
@smudge0356 5 жыл бұрын
@@gundam0039 - Dood, WHAT!?!?!? You've got it backwards! First, Do NOT read this then bitch a reply as "tl;dr", 'cause no-one believes it! Next, as to your questions about what things mean on a racetrack, well, let me ask you: What do you THINK they mean? For example: 1. "... like the meter markers that pop up really fast before a turn...", Why do you even ask? If you know they're markers for 'metres' (correct spelling), then I suspect you know what they mean! 2. Not even sure what you mean by, '... tree lines...", a 'tree-line' is just what it says, it's simply a 'line of trees'. There aren't any driving/racing terms specific to 'trees'. 3. "... or red and white lines...", Where are the red/white lines? Yeah, I thought so... you know where they are! So, I guess you know they mark the edge of the circut at the corners. 4. "All this basic crap talked about in this vid is common sense that everyone knows." NO! They don't, that's why there are so many BAD racers online. However, no-one NATURALLY wants to practise in the way suggested in the video... ... and there, I believe, is the REAL problem. You were looking for a 'Quick Fix' to make you a better racer, without the long hours & hard work! As a result, you want to bitch about having wasted your time watching and 'cause it didn't have the easy-fix, you then baby-bitch about nothing! This video is NOT click-bait! P.S. EVERYONE knows what the markers mean, because they are derived through COMMON SENSE! Racing Flag meanings are a different matter... ... but then EVERYONE knows that a web-search is just a click away.

I got the free Project Cars Pagani edition, and was all over the track. It took me hours before I could get a valid lap time - the game rejected my laps for cutting the corners or hitting the walls. Then I started imagining I was driving my grandmother - she does not care for lap times, but cares about not flying off the road. This helped me with the slow and smooth a lot.

I downloaded that too. It has a huge learning curve because the track has a ton of elevation change and the cars are very powerful. It's a terrible way to start. Assetto Corsa is on sale on steam right now. I would recommend spending $20 and getting the ultimate edition to get all the DLC.

I’ve been sim racing for a couple of months with a logitech G29 wheel and pedals. I was using a printer table and wooden chair with a pad for comfort, but just got a omega apex stand which makes a difference in stability of my gear. Being much older 70 plus then alot of drivers may put me at a disadvantage, but my biggest problem amongst many, haha 😆, is my focus and distraction. My qual times aren’t bad on some tracks in GT sport, maybe 3 seconds off world class for a particular race, but invariably I lose many positions for example 5 th starting to 10th or 11th, by race end unfortunately. In GT sport where my SR rating is S, but my DR is essentially a pitiful 1, I get punted quite a bit. Also due to lack of consistent driving I lose position, especially if Im in a crowd. I really enjoy the games, both GTS and AC, but when I read that people are winning races right and left with only a few months of experience I definitely get frustrated. thanks for the video - cant say I’ve ever done 100 laps at 80% - gonna try it today favorite car - anything .. the name Porsche on it I don’t have a favorite track, some are just more difficult then others. oh yea I subscribed - hope your still in the game

Hi Tom, you are not the only older guy doing this. I’m slow because I’ve had a stroke but I am improving all the time. I love racing and I find a great community in Race Department. These guys understand my predicament and are ok with it. However, when being lapped in a race, I stick to the RD rules, ie. stay on the racing line and let them pass. I am always last, but hey, I have great races and great enjoyment. Assetto Corsa, ACC rFactor2 and RR3. So, there are a few guys older like us, but that shouldn’t stop your enjoyment. Happy Racing. Oh, and 100 laps of Brands Hatch coming up in a McLaren!

@@graemeglasgow4596 - good going Graeme. Keep those competitive juices flowing. I certainly enjoyed GT sport save for their inability to have a penalty system philosophy that they stick too and isn't ridiculous. I eventually made up to B liscense, but fell again to C, before moving on to Iracing and the newer GT version of ACC. Its a whole new ball game and feels more challenging then GTsport. For me, its all about focus and consistency around the track no matter where you are in the SIM Racing world and as you might imagine the aging process isn't particularly kind in that regard. Practice, practice, and more practice...best of luck mate!

As a weekend track car speedster (Turbocharged NB Miata) and now avid Simracer, I would suggest as helpful introducing, defining, explaining your "outside-inside-outside" with "entry point", "apex", "exit point", if that's not too technical for your target audience. My tip: do laps against your ghost. Focus on consistency not speed untill you can lap for 30 min, never go off track or hit anything, and +/- 1 sec for regular sized tracks. I would use a relatively slow car like a Miata w/ tc & abs on. When you can do that, go to a diff track (esp one you are going to do a race on), pick up the pace a bit, turn off 1+ aids, or drive a slightly faster car. Make this a daily practice.

I just started practicing and learning simracing about a week ago, so, my opinion may not be that valid. However, my approach to learning how to drive these things was first to learn throttle and brake control in something like F1 where they are extremely responsive, and overdoing it is not an option. It's helped me in smoothing my acceleration and braking quite a bit. It's also really hard to stop those F1 cars from snapping loose. It's helped me learn a little less overcorrection. Holding the wheel steady rather than snapping the wheel in the other direction. There are lessons you can learn diving in the deep end. But I definitely agree that starting in a very neutral car is going to be more forgiving. Starting with something hard is definitely frustrating, but incredibly rewarding when you make progress. That's my phillsophy anyway. Great video.

I'm just 3-4 hours into my sim racing career. Here's my experience so far, for anyone who cares: I bought a PS4, Assetto Corsa, a Logitech G29 and a Playseat Challenge, all new. Took me about 2 hours to set it all up and get driving. I started with the Miata on Silverstone National - an easy circuit I know well from RR3 and GRID Autosport, which I play on an ipad. For the first hour or so I was all over the road. Could not complete a lap without drifting into the kitty litter. It was aggravating and not fun - I was wondering whether I'd just wasted $1K on this stuff. Then I switched to faster cars - first the Z4 GT3, then the 911 GT3 Cup and the RSR 2017 - and I think I felt more comfortable in those cars. I was still having problems and running off track every couple of laps, but I was starting to have some fun. (I've been using auto transmission, ABS and some low percentage stability control (20-30%) and occasionally the racing line, but no traction control.) By about the third or fourth hour I had tried Spa, Barcelona and Laguna Seca, and I am really enjoying it. It's a blast. It's difficult at first but the more laps you do the better you get. Like anything, really. I hope to wean myself off of the assists and switch to manual shift before too long....

I agree for the most part, but the aero of an F1 car is unlike anything else in the game. Particularly in high speed cornering, it can give new drivers a false sense of what is possible in most cars. Eau Rouge is a great example of this; not many cars can take it flat out besides F1.

Well I play AC, PCars, R3E, and recently got the good old Simbin sims and rFactor. And I found out that the Gokarts actually helped me learn to drive the formula Cars the most. Especially the 250cc Superkarts..............they are twitchy as hell. If you can deal with them, you can deal with an F1 car. ;) As in a way it's a very high powered, big superkart. A rather relaxing and still highly fun car to drive is the Caterham 7 Classic, not too fast, but still sporty to drive, makes you aware of weight transit, low CG and still soft enough springs. Edit: And when it comes to training, GTR2 is the best, due to the race driving school it has. My only gripe would be, that it has a challenge for accelerating under rain on slicks, but none for braking, as I think it might happen more often, that you are in a race on slicks and it starts to rain then staring a race in the rain on slicks. Unless you are Jos Verstaapen, Jaques Villeneuve or Heinz Harald Frentzen! ;) :P

What I've started doing is I made a binder w/ maps of the tracks. I put each in plastic sleeves then write notes of things to look for along the track for breaking markers and such. Sometimes several diff items on track Bk some cars (eg) break @ diff spots. I often do this in replay mode of an initial moderate pace lap and pause often to get to just the right spot and take notes. I find if I review my notes for a min or two it's a lot faster to relearn a track I haven't driven in awhile or for a very diff type of car. I also have a diff page for the same track in a diff game since they can be different.

When I started sim racing, I used a Lamborghini Huracan Performante. That car is AWD, easy to drive, and is fast! Currently, I'm learning the last car in the game, the Porsche 918 Spyder. It tends to be unstable when braking, so I can't put much braking force into the pedal, or the car loses control. I'm learning on last skill, how to deal with bad/careless drivers. These are people who don't use a steering wheel, ram into you, lose control infront of you, etc... I am a good driver, but I can't handle bad drivers.

My hardest thing is finding a wheel that's good enough, without being stupidly priced. For example, the Thrustmaster TMX looks good, then you look at the PRO versions and now the TMX looks like garbage. Same with the Logitech 920 compared to the Fanatec wheels. My wife would murder me in my sleep if I paid $500 for a wheel. I'm in my mid 40's and I've actually raced real cars IRL and the wheel I had before (The Driving Force GT that everyone applauded) never felt or drove like real life felt. And I've never used one where the pedals felt realistic at all. No pressure like a real brake does. The gear sticks never had that effort and click feeling, just digital feeling. The FFB felt like gears clicking into place with gamepad rumble effects added. No car feeling at all. I know the newer wheels are supposed to be closer to that, but then again, which ones do that don't cost hundreds of dollars?I'm worried about spending $300+ for a Logitech 920 and then feeling like it doesn't translate to real driving feel. And with USED wheels, you're taking a gamble that the previous user didn't burn out the motor or sensors or drop it down a flight of stairs.

Excellent tips. Been playing racing games for several decades now and Real Racing 3 on a phone for 3 years now. Watch "The Racing Line" with Randy Pobst and while he is a real racing driver his tips have paid dividends on RR3. Im planning on getting some sim equipment so we will see how long it takes to translate. I remember an old Nissan Stanza that was a stick and it so much fun to drive which is the real reason i've got to get a sim rig.

Hi there. I just bought the ultimate pack off Microsoft Store for Xbox One last night to see how this game is. I must admit, I was handed my a.. In the first corner already. I immediately knew that my controller will never do the job, but I like challenges so I'll be off to get a wheel, pedal, shifter amd seat setup. I initially was going to buy Assetto Corsa Competizione which is coming out on console soon so I thought I'd try the old one first. What got me into SIM racing is probably playing WRC8 at the moment. While I'm not playing it in full sim mode, there are other factors which simulate a full sim like the office setup and managing everything. Let's admit, most of us started out with Gran Turismo 1 on PSX thinking that it was a race sim. Well... It taught us to mod, push cars off the road and win races I'd say. I'm really looking forward to Assetto, and will probably put in a lot of time in this game.

Got Project Cars 2 the other day for free and was absolutely furious and thought the game was garbage cause of it's handling. However, when I got on iRacing for the first time which I know is the pinicale of sim racing, I was having the same issues with handling and realized it must be just me. I've spent 20 years thinking I was good at racing games and now I've realized I'm actually garbage. It sucked at first, but it just means I have to relearn everything I thought I knew.

The lower the less support -> for GT3 cars, I recommend setting traction control to 1 or off (if you are skilled enough) and ABS to 1. Depending on the quality & setting of the pedals you may raise it a bit.

I think this is a good tip video, but I think you're highly underestimating Gran Turismo players. I play Forza and Forza is great, but its AI, most of its players, and portions of its design actively discourage good racing, but I don't think I've met more than a handful of people who have played Gran Turismo that didn't know what a racing line was, or what a braking point was, or how to counter steer and recover. I subbed anyway.

SimRacing604 hey bud, just getting in to sim racing, I have a wheel, rig, pedals, I've come from forza, been struggling a bit with assetto corsa campaign, finding it hard and a little bit tedious. I watched this vid last night, i got up today with a mission to give it another go using your tips, I got in the Audi R8 LMS 2016 and hit imola for a practice, all went well so I decided to create a race, I use a few apps one being hellicorsa and OMG! What a difference, I hate that in the campaign you only have 3/4 laps and I have that console mentality that I don't have much time so I must get to the front by the end of the first lap, which always ends badly in this game. So in this race I put it at 12 laps, with your tips as well I had the best freaking time I've ever had in a racing game, so much so I got so exited I crashed, lmfao, and had to come and write this. So thanks very much man keep up the good work.

Yeah legit I bought it this week for console, I was a Turismo boy for years and years and felt really competitive, this game on controller coming from gt brought me back down to earth, first car I raced with was the la Ferrari and I was like this games ass, started the career and got in the Abarth and hated it, I do believe the wheel will make a huge difference, but I tweaked the controller settings so I can sorta get it smoother now and I've gotten to the McLaren and Mercedes section but geeze you're talking some truth. I already new the out in out lines but the controller was just so twitchy and with the physics of it a couple of twitches is a spin and a rage quit

I'm bad beginner. So, my response to yours: 1. Yes 2. I like the KTM X-Bow but one day it feels so good but another day it feels crazy hard to drive. Tried the Lotus 2-Eleven GT4 and I can't even hold a stable corners. (I am that bad.) 3. True but whenever I play in "race mode", I tend to lose focus and crash my car every time. I have no problem in Time Attack. Just racing. Racing is hard. Not trying to kill other people is hard. I hate that. 4. True, it's fun trying to get the best entry and exit points, etc. 5. The fun part is when you feel like you're improving. But the best in AC is modding. I don't know why. I like computer games that can be modded. I don't know how much of my life was wasted when I used to play The Sims every single hour.

My tip is: 1. Do LOTS of laps in a relatively slow car like a Miata against your ghost. Don't try to go super fast, focus on consistency. I'd leave tc & abs on until you can lap for 30 min +/- 1 second per lap on a regular sized track, w/out ever going off track or hitting anything. 2. Do this as a daily practice. When you can regularly do this remove a driving aid and repeat. Repeat until all aids are off. 2a. Repeat on different tracks, esp one you are planning to do a race on. 3. Continue this daily practice but pick up the pace, drive a faster car, or download the ghost of someone a bit faster than you and try to match their lines.

I would say if you want a cheap wheel in 2020 or higher you can get a Logitech g29 or g920 for 100 dollars I can say from experience do not get a thrust master tmx it sucks if you want a thrust master get a thrustmaster tx it’s a way better version of a tmx but the downside is it’s like 500 bucks the good thing about it is that you can change the rims to different rims but if you are going for a cheap wheel and you don’t know if you are going to like sim racing just get a g920 for 91.15 dollars on ebay I really hope this helps!

@SimRacing604
@SimRacing604 5 жыл бұрын
LudwigBeefoven it’s totally up to the driver. If having them turned off ruins your driving enjoyment, then by all means turn them on until you’re ready to turn them off. The paramount thing in my opinion is that new drivers enjoy sim racing enough to put in the required laps.

Laps: +1 on lots of laps but I find just lapping boring, so what I do is a AI race ~ 20 min long. Longer gets boring again, but it’s long enough to require smoothness & consistency. AI set to a level that is challenging but again focus on consistency. Racing your ghost can also help esp w/ improving your lines. Car: +1 on not too fast a car. I find the Abarth race car still fun to drive & easier to focus on consistency & smoothness, than say GT3, both are rewarded & mistakes punished more & can’t be made up w/ power. Driving aids: at first it’s fine to use driving aids but you should work to turning most way down or even off esp abs & traction control. Some like to use the racing line but I find it inconsistent & harder to learn to drive w/o it. An AI race w/ it turned down in a slowish car is better for learning a track. Just follow the other cars. Pedals: if you don’t have load cell based breaks mod them w/ a piece of rubber to increase resistance at a certain point then adjust it’s calibration in game. Easier to modulate breaks w/o abs using pressure instead of distance. Learning tracks: as mentioned above I like to set a race against the AI ~ 20 min long in a relatively slow car, and just cycle through the tracks I want to learn. A much faster car is fine occasionally, U may have to turn the AI down & the aids up but I’d focus most of the time on slower cars w/ aids off, improving consistency & smoothness.
