I’m a member of a few craft clubs and whenever someone has surplus, we take it to the club and share. I’ve also sewn scraps of interfacing to get the size I need. I’ve even started using my scraps to make birthday/Christmas cards and labels. Yes, it takes time but I enjoy the challenge and my gifts are unique. Great video Whitney, thank-you!

Estate sales are my go to place for sewing supplies and fabric. It really is a great way to save a lot of money because they usually sell it to you for cheap. Thanks for the other tips as well!

I actually paid very good money at a craft show one time for a little kit to make my own shrinkydink buttons! you never would’ve known they were shrinkydink! You can color them with sharpies or crayons or even colored pencils depending on what color you are trying to end up with. It’s a lot of fun and you can get a whole punchers with only a 1/8 inch punch or you can use the regular quarter inch punch depending on the size button you’re making. You need to punch the hole before you shrink it! I had never done shrink he dink before I used this kit.

Great tips! Ive used most of them myself. One of my favorite things to aquire fabrics for my sewing projects is thrifting all cotton sheets at the salvation army near me. Have repurposed many cute heavier weight table cloths and curtains into shopping bags. Many of my quilts contain thrifted material.

I have never been to an estate sale but I have done the other things you mentioned. I have bags of jeans that my kids have outgrown that I use for projects. I piece together batting and other interfacings. I also use small scraps for pillow stuffing. Thanks for your tips and all your years of knowledge and inspiration.

I love your tips. I don’t like to throw out fabric or batting scraps. One day I ran out of batting, so I took my batting scraps and spent time zigzagging them together into Frankie-batting, it saved the day. I’ve continued to do that on days I want to sew with no particular project at hand. I have a friend who volunteers at a Humane Society Thrift store. She keeps an eye out for fabric, scraps, zippers, buttons, batting etc for me. Also she lets me know when they have “all clothing items are $1” sales. I’ve found some great fabric that way.

Hi Whitney, really great tips and it seems that I already follow quite all of them. Several of my friends know that I am sewing and I got several bags of denim, shirts, old neck ties (love them! 😍) for free. I also like to look for sewing supplies in what you might call thrift stores. There I sometimes find brand threads spools for 10 or 20 Cents each. And then I buy everything I can get 🙈 My brother is also aware and sometimes sends photos like "I saw that - do you want to have it? They have fabric scraps again today - which one do you like?" 😂 I even taught him the brands he has to look for 😀 Just a fun thing I'll always remember. I also sew batting scraps together and love to use those for pouches. Or use fabrics that I don't like where they are not seen afterwards (interfacing, background/base for piecing etc.) xoxo from Germany Stephanie

Glad you like the tips! I am staying very busy with homeschooling, homesteading, and competitive costuming, so no time for tutorials right now. I do still want to post videos so I'm trying this style for a while. They are quick to film and edit and still offer value to my subscribers while I'm unable to make sewing tutorials (which take many, many hours of planning, filming, and editing).
