video idea what kind of thing can you do to live cheaper in AK

EXTRA tips we learned and researched: *Don't forget to get your cars winterized as soon as you arrive (or you will crack your engine block!). *Most things are cheaper outside of Alaska so buy before you arrive if possible. Things like wool clothing, or a used car etc. *Watch his other videos on methods for getting there. Drive, ferry, or fly. Can be very pricy if you ship up a container of stuff. Expect to pay 7-8k for a smaller one. 3-4k for a car. *Don't arrive without a plan, and try to find a rental once getting there. Property is limited in most or all of Alaska, and finding a place can take awhile. Some areas it comes and goes depending on military or seasonal workers. You might not be able to find a place to rent. *If you drive... bring 1-3 spare tires. That highway through Canada-Alaska is basically a bumpy pothole. *Do not wear cotton. Get quality gear for winter and you will be thankful for it. Cold is not bad when you have gear. Wet and cold is how you end up with toes removed. *Expect it to be hard and emotionally challenged your first year. Moving is big, and dark winters can be tough. Take vitamin D, and give yourself time to adjust. *If you are losing your insurance and take medications etc, make sure you try to stock up a few months supply before you move. Don't end up in a new place and run out. GOOD LUCK!

$3k a month to live AK baseline. $4k to move your vehicle there by ferry. $3k in new gear. $25k to do it properly with 6 months saved.

We were so prepared before going up to Alaska. We enjoyed living in Fairbanks. One mistake is going unprepared.

So when my family moved to Juneau Alaska I was already working up there so my wife had to drive through the Yukon in her third trimester of pregnancy with My mom and a dog. 😅

The drive is beautiful. The cost of the move from the midwest was very high. If i did it again I would sell our furniture and really scale down and drive a u haul up.

Looking at the ferry up there and bribing gun to Alaska
@alaska_realtor

You would have to drive through Canada either way because the ferry doesn't go all the way through to Valdez or Whittier at the moment. I'm more of a proponent of just driving the Alcan at this point. The ferry system has too many vessels being repaired that normally makes the Bellingham to Valdez or Whittier route.

Well, I believe I have a few guns that are unauthorized in Canada.

I've noticed a hand full of people just don't do enough research before making the jump. They come up with $2000 or something like that and don't take into consideration the cost of living like you said, food, etc. I've seen people move up in September and not take into consideration they will need to buy winter gear or winterizing their car and then not have the funds to be properly prepared.

Hi! I am enjoying your channel. I am a school teacher; I have been speaking with matsu valley school recruiter. Wondering what is with all the foreclosures in that area? Maybe need the relocation guide? But honestly wondering if these are safe buys? Thanks!
@alaska_realtor
@alaska_realtor 6 ай бұрын
Hey man, that's exciting. There are only 8 foreclosures for the entire MatSu Valley (about 150mi wide as the crow flies). That's actually pretty low for the average. I should do another video soon talking foreclosures. As for the specific property, I couldn't say without knowing more about it. A lot of people in foreclosure get comfortable with the idea that they can get what their neighbors got for their property without doing any of the work that they did. Just because it's a foreclosure doesn't mean it's a bargain.

We are moving there December 29th this year from Texas. We talked to some locals and did some research (your videos have really helped) and have bought all the cold weather things we will need. We thought the drive would be a unique experience but it’s dangerous in the winter. So, we are selling all of our furniture (no attachment to any of it) and just shipping everything else for about $3,000 and shipping my car for another $3,200. We are selling my husbands car because we wanted to get him a truck. We will fly up there and then buy him a truck there. Any feedback to offer or thoughts?

That's certainly the easiest way to do it and what I usually recommend if it's possible! One thing I would say is plan to buy new furniture when you get here. There's a bed bug problem up here so you never know what you're getting when you buy used furniture.
