Heya! I have no family (that I live with) or connections, not much I’m bringing with me, a job I can transfer, and I can save up money to give myself a buffer and a year to wait before my current lease is up. I’m looking to live in anchorage, one issue is I don’t drive. How reasonable is me moving up, I’ll be flying I looked up average rental prices and it said 1k which is within my budget. And already found a place with some openings (not that it helps since I have to wait a year)

My plan is to drive when I move next year. There are several different routes to take but AlCan is the most common and sensible. I priced the ferry and it was pretty expensive compared to just driving. But I guess I need to calculate a few tires into my comparison to be more accurate.

@BUCK LANE I move to Alaska sooner than I planned. I was offered a position in Anchorage and moved to Eagle River, AK at the end of August, 2020. Here is my experience moving: I took a 26 foot U-Haul with an auto transport to tow my SUV (had to go by myself because no one was allowed through Canada unless it was absolutely necessary). I was not able to take the ferry ⛴..........Canada was not allowing people through their country other than a few exceptions (for instance, people moving to Alaska) because of the pandemic so the ferry was booked into September since everyone else was using the ferry to transport their vehicles and get back to Alaska who would have otherwise driven through Canada. I had to report to my new job on Aug. 31st so I had no choice but to drive through Canada........and the Canadians were not very happy about it from my perception. BUT, no flat tires along the way! It was VERY remote for hundreds of miles, and it was very beautiful too. I did rent a satellite phone just in case I needed to call someone because of engine troubles or a flat tires. Also, because I was only allowed to go through drive-through's to buy food while traveling through Canada (which was not possible because of the large uhaul and auto transport that I used to tow my suv behind the moving van), I had to eat out of a cooler and sleep in the uhaul.....for over 3 days! Very unpleasant and uncomfortable. Bathrooms at rest areas going through British Columbia were very, very......well they only had a few along the way. However, going into Yukon, they almost always had bathrooms at each of their rest areas (outhouses really) so you better be willing to squat behind a bush until you get into Yukon and hope there is not a hungry bear 🐻 close by. And even then, Yukon officials give you 24 hours to get out of their country and into Alaska. Also, be careful because while I was going through Canada, I had to drive through 2 different herds of buffalo/bison in the middle of the highway which was pretty intimidating. Those animals always look like they are ready for a fight. I also saw about 5 bears along the way too. When you finally get into Alaska, you are automatically in quarantine again because of COVID. So when I finally was able to get a nice, warm meal days later, it was such a luxury! Hope this information helps someone and makes you better prepared for your travels. Good luck. 🙂

I drove the Alcan in 2021 and I didn't blow a tire. I ran 31 psi cold on 1-year-old Michelin Defenders and I capped my speed at 90 kmh on the "good" roads and 70 kmh on the "poor" roads. The worst section is leaving Canada entering Alaska, the road was absolutely covered in holes and bumps, that was when I was most afraid I was going to blow a tire.

After 39 years of living in Arizona, I am ready to get out of the heat and pollution of Phoenix and am considering a move to Alaska, as I am a huge outdoors person--either there or NW Montana or Northern Idaho but I like Alaska more. I am in excellent shape at 59 years of age so I figure I better get this big adventure underway before I get too old and end up sitting around pounding cans of Ensure and thinking "I sure wish I would have given it a try." The only catch will be work--I have to find work (I am a non-courtroom attorney by trade but not licensed in Alaska) so that's the domino that has to fall. Question: I would be bringing my 2 dogs (who are all for the move, by the way)--can you bring dogs on the ferry? My guess is probably not for liability reasons but maybe they have an exception for cool dogs . . .
@alaska_realtor

Great question and yes you certainly can. You just have to crate them in your car and you get to walk them around a few times a day. The only pets you can't bring on the ferry are rodents of any kind.

We plan to come up July of 2021. We are going to rent a 1 way R.V. tow our small SUV and drive up. It seemed to be the cheapest way to bring up a few belongings, and the 2 dogs +2kids. The ferry is awesome but expensive and harder to bring items. Flying is even more expensive because you got to ship up car / belongings.

The ferry to Anchorage across the gulf is not operating in summer 2024 due to staff shortage. And the ferry is not a good option if you have pets because I read that the pets must remain in the vehicle and the owner is only allowed I think 1 hour every so many hours to come down to the vehicle deck and take care of them - feeding, walking dogs, etc. They are not allowed on the people decks or cabins. Driving the Alcan seems to not be a real good idea during winter.

@alaska_realtor
@alaska_realtor 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. I personally looked at teaching up here when I first got here and the best thing I can say is that you should get your certs all squared away in your state and try to transfer. When I talked with UAA about transferring all the classes I had to get certified, they wouldn't do it. It's kind of a racket up here, so avoid UAA if at all possible and talk with the board with the state about transferring your license.

Can you tell me if you know anything about HUD housing or section 8 housing in Alaska? Starting with the first place you mentioned on your video please. Thank you very much
@alaska_realtor
@alaska_realtor 3 жыл бұрын
You can get an annual PFD of about $800-$1200 lately per person, so not really. There is a lot more darkness in the northern parts of the state around Fairbanks. South central around Anchorage is more mild with south east AK being more or less like Seattle in climate. As for HUD housing, I'm not going to be the best resource on specific questions about those areas so check out the HUD websites.

Awesome info! Have yet to visit Alaska but I feel its been calling me for years. Born and raised in 🇨🇦. Have been nursing in Texas for 27 years now. Travel nursed all over the USA but unfortunately never got up to Alaska. Married a Texan and you know how hard it is to get them to leave Texas! 🤣. Tired of the heat here and ready for a change of scenery. I currently work at a Children’s ER Providence facility here in West Texas. Will be a few more years before we can retire. Would like a little piece of property with no restrictions on domicile, with good access to the hospital for work. Any recommendations? We also like to hunt and fish.

@@alaska_realtor well a Big Howdy 🤠 from Lubbock, TX! We are in our early 50’s. Hubby grew up in Corpus Christi where his dad was the city electrician and also owned a sign shop that made the first signs for Whataburger and his family also ranched in Waco. I grew up on the farm in Saskatchewan and lived 2 hours from Saskatoon where I went to University. I was lucky to do a nursing internship in Northern Saskatchewan at LaLoche on the reservation. What a wild and wooly time but I loved it! Got to fly a Piper Navajo plane after we dropped off a patient. The pilot needed to log some flight hours so he had me take the wheel. Crazy Fun! My husband and I love to try different lifestyles. We also fulltimed in an RV for 5 years during our travel nursing days. My ideal life would be to do remote work, travel full time in a Super C and have our home base in Alaska. Our children’s hospital here just got a Trauma surgeon from Alaska- Dr Proctor. You don’t know her do you? 😆. The Eagle River area looks amazing. Small town vibe and beautiful scenery but still close to all the amenities of the big city of Anchorage. We like people but not too close. 🤣Just need an acre give or take to put a cozy cabin on and place to park the RV. Ideally no restrictions.
