In today's video I talk about the 5 most important things I learned about growing strawberries. There are basic things that I could have avoided if I knew what I was doing. Like I always say you live and learn. Most of the things I've learned I'm going to apply them in next year's growing season, And I am hoping I will not make the same mistakes I did this year. There is a video coming soon about how many pounds I picked and how profitable it was.
If you have any questions let me know!

And the best lesson of them all is LEARNING FROM YOUR MISTAKES.. Keep at it kid 👌 as long as you learning each season you will be fine..(just don't bite off too much too quick before ya get the new stuff down to science.) Your far more advanced than most your age just by recognizing the issues before you go at it the next round it sounds like......keep it up 👍 Subbed

Your videos have been quite inspiring, and now I have a fixation of watching you for much needed information. My husband and I just bought a small apple orchard with the farm house on the property. A neighbor was contracted by the previous owners to care for and harvest all the fruit on the property. My husband and I finally (having lived on the property just 1 month) walked and inspected all our trees (433 Gala apples trees with 44 crab apple trees interspersed among the Gala's) - after watching many videos including yours. We found our trees were marginally maintained, so we are planning on caring for our trees to prepare for harvesting our own fruit. We want to be more vested in our newly purchased orchard. We live in Washington state, where the ecosystem in high dessert; so it is hot, little rain, some snow in the winter. Steve and I are city-people BUT we both have the "living close to the earth" gene, and finally we took a leap to live on a farm and in a farming community. Farmer Dre - you are very knowledgeable and down to earth which helped up gain confidence that we can farm our orchard in our retirement years!!! Thank you again!!!

So I don't know standard strawberry practice but why not use a legume for your cover crop? If you're adding all that nitrogen, the ryegrass would take up a lot of it. A legume would at least add some nitrogen to the soil for free.

Just an idea, would clover be something to consider to plant in-between the rows? It doesn't grow so tall and it's something nice to put your knee's on when picking.

Floyd the produce guy said it doesn't make any difference what you pay someone. You have your workers and your goof-offs. I found that to be true. The workers will work for what ever the pay is and the goof-offs will goof-off no matter the pay.

All research is speaking of the detrimental affects of tilling and uni corps. Have you considered intercropping to help your yields while improving your soil?
@cristobalpacheco4202

Dre, how much would you say you have to spend on chemicals for your entire farm? This must be a huge number? And could you talk about the long term effect on the soil of using glyphosate, not to mention what it does to the crop? I garden on 2 acres and the weeds are a full time job! Are the strawberries only good for 1 year, and now you have to replace them, you are a very hardworking man and every new crop you add creates more work, I’d be interested to know how you and your family are compensated, “just ballpark not anything specific “being as you seem to be doing most of the work and your father supplying the working capital, I’m sure there is more than meets the eye as to what’s going on inside the family, believe me I know I’m 58 and have 8 children myself. You are building up this farm that is not even yours and will eventually be split up among all of you, at some point id like to see you go to an area of the country that is better suited to what you want to do, “California” and be out from under your father’s thumb! I say this respectfully because I am that father

I’m afraid you’re right, Dre is really trying but I think he’s the only one with his heart in it, up until the money runs out,He is learning by his costly mistakes piled on top of each other as we are witnessing as you say.

@Lapis Manalis I'm no farmer, just a small scale gardener/botanist also making videos ;). But I have been wondering why he went so big on so many crops that are fairly well known to be difficult to grow (strawberries, blueberries) in Missouri. I'd have started with much much smaller experiments personally. He may just be showing the experimental side. It sounds like their major operation is apples, and I know of at least one quite successful apple/peach orchard in Missouri, near me. There are probably more I'm not aware of.

Fungicide, pesticide, herbicide, insecticide.. What about organic? They're strawberries. You could get a few poly tunnels with mesh sides, hang a gutter system to grow the strawberries in, avoid the vine weevil, avoid birds, avoid slugs. What you'd pay im chemcials every year would proabbly cover the cost ofma 40 foot tunnel
