many times I've found items assembled wrong or left loose by dealership on a brand new bike. They often use a kid or some new guy to take bikes out the crate and do the final assembly.

It's true my man! This bike had 13 lbs. of grease hanging out of each side of the front axle... you know, the only bolt they actually have to put in when un-crating haha! It would have been all over my brand new front breaks after a few laps if I didn't do these kind of pre-ride checks.

Don’t forget to clean the rotors. The Cosmoline used to prevent corrosion during shipment will foul the brake pads. And as others have mentioned, check spokes, rim locks and all fasteners.

This is a great one. Another one of my favorites. I ruined about six blue shop towels, and half a bottle of brake cleaner. The black crud just kept on coming off, seemingly no matter how long I sprayed and wiped. These were particularly dirty, but the brakes worked unbelievably well today after this deep cleaning

I'm a Suzuki guy as well and was also hopeful for a new 450. I thought about pulling the trigger on a yz, but my gut is telling me to hold off for one more year. Great video!

Guys ~ Unlike the Honda, Kawi or KTM/Husky/Gas Gas platform cycles, the previous generation RM cycle lasted 10 years (2008-2017 model years). This current platform is only on yr 7. By the law of averages, got four more years to go before anything new could be considered to potentially come out. Def need to shed some lbs & add more over rev.

Awesome tip video !! Funny you did this today as I did all this last night 🌙 on my new 23 KTM SX pre-mx'r 250 I just got yesterday ( it will do until " Hellfire " is done lol 😆 ) many years ago I worked at a kawasaki Suzuki dealership and remember setting up bikes my words were all the factorys must use cat pee and poop 💩 for lubricating??? Don't forget tire pressure/ spokes/ sprocket and all bolts - I cannot tell you how many people show up at track and saying their new bike handles terrible, well with 3 lbs of air in there they do !!! Charles, who does your background decals, I want the same !!! Again great video and happy riding everyone, enjoy the new zed sled Charles- BRAAAAAAAAP to all

What’s your recommendation for filter oil?
@mxrevival
@mxrevival 8 ай бұрын
I love & use the NoToil filter system (cleaning & oil). But make sure to wash & re-oil your “out-of-the-bag” pre-oiled NoToil filters… they don’t do as good a job as a freshly serviced one 💪

This is my favorite comment on the video so far. I blew it, totally should’ve added that into the chassis grease portion as extra credit.

On top of installing an hour meter, start a maintenance log and track date + hours for everything you do. A) you have a nice handy log of all the stuff you've done, even if you forget. B) You can probably fetch a better price for your bike when you sell it because you can say exactly what was done to it

MAKE SURE IT HAS AN OIL FILTER. Had a ktm 250 a few years ago didn’t come with oil filter and blew up first day of riding

This is an excellent tip! I had a few used bikes that were missing the spring that out pressure on the filter, and one kidding the strainer & magnet in the lower drain…but that’s terrible!

Get your 8 to 10 hrs on your bike before you decide to get your suspension worked on as all the high spots will have been smoothed and in the old oil and standard oil in suspension isn't usually great. Along with what Charles said. All bolts need a spot of grease to get the correct torque value.
@mxrevival
@mxrevival Жыл бұрын
So true! Always a little bit stiff when they are breaking in. Great tip on the torque as well, I should’ve mentioned it, and where to find it. (your service manual, if anyone read this)
@inevespace
@inevespace Жыл бұрын
spot of grease will make INcorrect clamping load at same torque. You shouldn't grease threads if it is not specified.
@stevesmith756

@@inevespacewhy? My buddy is a machinist and he said grease or locktight should be used for correct torque
@inevespace
@inevespace Жыл бұрын
@@stevesmith756 you can be a machinist and don't know basics of engineering. Even in standard torque tables lubed fasteners have own column and different torque values(just Google it, it is in first search results). Torque also depend on alloys used. Usually people get away with completely incorrect torque just because everything is designed with huge safety factor, like 5.

Warranty work? Who has a Warranty on a dirt bike?
@mxrevival
@mxrevival Жыл бұрын
Here's a messed up story... I once bought a warranty (after some peer-pressure) for a brand new 2009 RMZ450 at the dealer. A few weeks later the third party warranty dept. called and said "hey sorry you are not covered as we never got paid". Turns out the dealership provided me with paperwork showing the warranty line item, etc. for all the costs associated with the sale. They sent ANOTHER copy (with my forged signature on it) to the finance company, showing $0 paid in warranty column & the amount it would have cost was fudged into the bike's base price. Turns out, the dealership knew they were going out of business two weeks after I bought my bike. Got scammed out of about $1000. My gut told me not to get a warranty for something I'm going to go crash & I had never heard of a warranty for a dirt bike EVER, but I did it anyway. Long story, but the dealers sell them & a friend just took his new Gas Gas in for warranty work on fork seals! I laughed when he told me as I thought he was getting scammed too.... but they fixed his seals 😂 An honest dealer / service contract sold.

I would not touch any bearings that rotate fast, like wheel bearings. In 90% of the time people overgrease them causing overheat and failure. Other slow bearings are not sensitive to overpacking. I don't understand what is "waterproof" grease? All lithium greases are waterproof.
@mxrevival

Thinking you might be an engineer…. Thanks for watching!
@inevespace
@inevespace Жыл бұрын
@@mxrevival no, I just collected information about bearings. In industrial application there is statistics of failures and overgreasing is one of the top reasons. Amount of grease is related with rated speed of rotation. More speed, less grease you have to use. Bearings used in wheels are rated to rotate like 5000RPM which is way way higher than wheel does. So manufacturers have to use less grease because of high RPM, but you can add if your application is low RPM. Problem that you don't know how much to add. So I wouldn't mess with NEW bearings. With old bearings I guess you can add or replace grease. Because I think washing out contamination is more beneficial than damage caused by possible overpacking.
