From the creators and production company (Los Feliz Films) of Hermanos Short Film, brings you 5 BLOCK.
About:
5 BLOCK follows Jose Flores, a convicted criminal serving a life sentence, who, despite overwhelming challenges and adversity, discovers his inner strength and transforms into a beacon of hope and redemption for himself and others.
Dive deep into the reality of the US prison system with Jose Flores in 5 BLOCK. Experience a day in the life of an inmate, revealing the struggles, dreams, and strength within the prison walls. Get a raw and insightful perspective on incarceration from sunrise to sunset.
Directors Note:
While creating '5 Block,' I witnessed the profound impact of positive programming in prisons and became more passionate than ever about bringing humanity to those seeking a second chance.
I believe the sharing of Jose “Hozer” Flores’s compelling journey with audiences is a narrative that can evoke and spark a much-needed conversation about the power of rehabilitation within our prison systems.
Jose and countless others have undergone incredible transformations, demonstrating the limitless potential that exists within each of us.

I did ten years in CDC 94-04. Fortunately I made it out. A year after working a minimum wage job I started my own business. That was 19 years ago. I now employ 33 and have generated well over 50 million dollars. I’m beyond blessed for the opportunity I got when that door opened. But when that door opens, it’s on you to kick it down and work your ass off to scale that opportunity and succeed. Trials will come but it’s the way you navigate your way out of them. I dropped out of school in 7th grade. I gang banged my whole life and the only thing I learned in prison was how to deal with different personalities and patience. Those two traits have got me a long way in business. Seek and you will find that door. Don’t give up be patient you deserve what you put out.

I spent five years on A-Yard. Sep of 2001 to May 2006. Back then it was called the “Honor Yard,” which was created by a couple of “old school” reformed convicts in the year 2000. There was talk way back then about opening up 5 Block to a dog program. It was a great honor and privilege to be on that yard and away from all of the madness that was going on at that prison and around the system. I was in CDC from 1997 to 2020. It was a long journey, and I learned so much from so many people. And watching this video and seeing Jose, I could see the transformation in him. He definitely deserves another chance. All of those men deserve another chance because they’re giving themselves a chance to be the change that they want to see. “ It’s never too late to start to become the person that you were always meant to be.”

This video is the closest to “real” jail Life. The guys in this Made me feel so proud of them. I love my job making them see not everyone is angry and mean. My purpose is to help change lives positively and look forward to work every day. There’s so much more talent in art being wasted. The paintings is a great program too. I’ve been given some amazing drawings or art from my inmates. Great video. Good job Jose. Keep up the excellent work. You rock buddy.

@@ahuramazda980 While he himself is a God of second chances, he would expect you to pay for your crimes and serve your sentences. Paul was in prison twice. One time he stayed around to show the guard that he wasn't going to run away. He was a changed man - when he was called Saul, he was persecuting and even killing Christians. God changed his heart. Most serial killers have something wrong in their heads and don't get the help they need. It would never be safe to let them out on the street again. Too many prisoners say "I've found Jesus in here and I'm a changed man now." Jesus would probably say "then finish your time and stop using me as an excuse to try and get out early. I know your heart." If you are remorseful, prove it. Like this man has.

This is what society wants to see happen in prisons across this country. I am not deluded enough to believe that this works on everyone but when they finally have enough of prison and gang life this should be an opportunity for all inmates. There has got to be hope for them. They need something to work towards. Most are thrown in prison to rot. Some do deserve that but it’s not even the majority. Most can be healed and strive for better. This program is a treasure and should be emulated everywhere. These men are able to give a hug to one another and care about and encourage one another. They even shed some tears with one another. That is the ultimate sign for me of an environment where they can grow and change. Amazing job Jose.

Brought me to tears. I work with domestic violence offenders and know first-hand the perception many people within our society have against those who offend. This documentary gives so much hope to understand that individuation is so critical. Proper rehabilitation works for many and these guys deserve a second chance to make a positive contribution to society.

This dude is a role model to anybody. No matter what walk of life a person is from I think everyone could relate to Hoser. It’s a shame that he has to remain locked up. He could do so much good in the world. He’s the rare example of the system working. He should be rewarded and be given another chance. Keep growing Hoser. You will be free someday!!!

I would like to say to Jose Flores, your doing an amazing job, hey reach that PHd, it doesn’t matter if your incarcerated, your education is something that no one may ever take away! I am currently in Graduate School chasing my Rehabilitation Counseling degree and get my LPC to provide therapy to my fellow Military Veterans. I have also felt the same way about giving up but we must work harder and put in that work. We can make a difference as long as we believe I. Ourselves first!

From what I have seen there are a lot of programs but most of the people in them are only participating to get good time and time off their sentence or to get out of their cell for a while and meet with other guys from different blocks to pass drugs and stuff. They really ruin the potential of these programs, it's a difficult situation.

Amen- I did 100% of 2 years in CDC, 2014-2016. Got out and have kept my head down! I learned a lot from the experience, what I wanted to do with my life, what I didn’t want to do with my life. It’s not like this on most main line California yards. Mad props to you fellas for making something out of nothing! I think it took me 3 years to get out of the ptsd from the experience and not be alarmed with people getting close to me or drivers being jerks. It took the same amount of time to take deep breaths again. I’ve been drug free since, and I don’t drink alcohol. I take no medication and I work full time. I provide for my children and I don’t harm myself or anyone else. I found the Lord in prison and I’m never walking away from him. God bless these men. Keep up the good fight!

Sensational documentary. This needs to be shown in schools everywhere, better still, get positive minded guys like these who have lived the life, taken responsibility for their actions, recognised the errors of their ways and who are intent on bettering themselves and moving forward, go into schools and impart their wisdom to young people. I'm from Australia & spent over 30 years working with disaffected youth and got so sick and tired of young University educated social & youth justice workers talking to young people about staying out of trouble when their target audience could plainly see that the closest they had ever come to crime and violence was when they logged on to the crime stoppers website.

I’ve done 23 years of my life locked up. It’s great to see that they now have good programs like this in prison even though I haven’t been back in over 10 years I’m glad to see that people in there still have a chance even after getting Life without parole and you can tell by the environment and the attitudes that these people are truly happy even though they’re behind bars, I hope to see more of this program in all the prisons across California and not just a limited few where it’s going to be hard for some people to get into them, everybody should share this video and it should get a lot more views because at the moment of me watching it it has a little bit less than 20,000 views and that’s sad, people out There should know that there are programs like this going on and that there are changes being made inside of Prison, God bless all these people. God bless their families and God bless everybody who is watching this video and reading these comments. 🙏🏽✌🏽👍🏽🤟🏽

"Hang in there." Great advice, as hard as it gets, hang in there. I'm sure we've all suffered some dark days, my brother killed himself, I wish he would have hung in there because it will get better. The bad times pass and most of the time turn in 2 better days. He's right, people do care. U just need 2 find the ones that do. But look 4 them if ur surrounded by people who don't, I promise u they are there. But hang in there, u will be glad u did 1 day. ❤
