I had a bad 2021 lost my dad, my old boss pushed me to a burnout ( i teached film photography and museum conservator)my boss kept cutting the teaching time till it was down to 20 min, his idea was to maximize the number of students we received in a day at the cost of quality, the lack of knowledge in photography shows in his expectations. Whilst i lament Ive loved photography all my life but been doing photography itself since i was 16 for the first time 2021 took all joy and interest in photography from me . For almost a year i have not done photography, but recently a spark of joy and enthusiasm came back also with a different mentality now i want to do street photography/ documentary photography exclusively and use only compact cameras film or digital I purchased the ricoh griii street edition. I want 2022 to be a good year and like you mattias I’m also a dad of 3 beautiful baby boy’s . I don’t want 2021 to keep me from taking photos of my sons as they grow up .

recovering from depression and burnout is so hard! especially when it takes away the things you love doing, which is a vicious cycle. photography was lost to me for several years due to illness and stress, so i know how it feels. if i could go back and tell myself one thing, it’s simply to drop all expectations - which are poison for recovery! don’t worry about taking “good” photographs, just enjoy the process and good photographs will come. wishing you many fun hours with it 💜

The camera I shouldn't have bought is the FujiFilm x100f. I just didn't fall in love with the body like I expected too, and it felt a bit slow. My second Fuji was the X-T10, and I was blown away by the image quality. Love that it has a viewfinder, and is compact. Won the auction at an online thrift shop, got it and the 27mm lens for around $350, what a steal. It was and is in mint condition. Bought some adapters so now I can shoot with a Super Takumar 50mm F1.4, manual focus, no softness at f2.8, and just amazed at the colors and contrast. My favorite fun camera.

Never regretted any camera purchase, each one thought me something about myself and my needs as photographer. Among these there are two I had love-hate relationship - Leica M240 and Fuji X100V. So far the camera I like the most is Fuji Xpro-3. I take it everywhere and love using it.

Why didn't you like the x100?
@rlysakowski
@rlysakowski 2 жыл бұрын
@@markn8535 I bought it to replace x100f - flippy screen was the main reason and my expectations were sort of pumped. Flippy screen turned out to be difficult to open (especially in gloves) and seemed to be fragile. I hated how the lens aperture ring was done - pretty unusable for me, too close to the body and again - hard to operate in gloves. Quite often I would press something without knowing and got surprises. Other than that very solid camera, I used it with TCL and WCLX adapters to see how far I can take it. Don’t get me wrong, I sometimes miss it as it’s beautiful thing but I have much more sentiment towards x100f. X100V became a ‘German car’ - solid, reliable but boring.

I bought the X100v as a replacement for my X-T1, partly because of the sensor and autofocus improvements over my old camera (I couldn’t afford an X-T4 body as I needed to sell the X-T1 & lenses to get the trade-in money), I never even considered the pull out rear screen in my assessment of the camera. I wanted a faster and more accurate autofocus and the faster processor too… the look of the camera was a secondary thought for me… I preferred the silver model as it looked so beautiful but bought the black model for my street work. Have I used the flip out screen as it’s intended to be used… yes, on the odd occasions I helped but mostly it’s left flush to the body. I now own both the X100v and the GRIIIX, and use them for street work (I also use an iPhone 13 Pro too)and enjoy both… I’ve owned, since 2012, Leica’s, Fujifilm, Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony and Kodak cameras but have settled on the two above… what would my ideal camera be: one of the Sony DSLR’s for the great autofocus and image quality (hate, hate, hate Sony’s menu settings!). If money was no object: the Leica Q2 or 3 when it comes out (I can dream). But I’m very happy with these cameras faults and all.

I really miss getting rid of my XPro1 in favour of XT3. XT3 is a much, much better camera (holy the XPro1 autofocus was so bad), but it's just so uncomfortable to physically use in comparison. Ended up switching to Nikon entirely lol, and now miss the film simulations.

My "wish i'd skipped" was the Fujifilm X-T4. I thought I'd like the IBIS and the rest would be fine. But the twisty-flippy screen and plastic-y feel of the camera didn't hit it for me. Every time I used it, I couldn't get over the lackluster feel I got while using it. Nothing really wrong with the camera, it's a fantastic camera. Just that for me, I wound up going back to my older nikon. My "wish I'd kept" was my Fujifilm x100f. Love the color science and ease of use. I didn't want the x100V model because I prefer having the tactile buttons on the back, not touchscreen. I sold it to a friend to help get them deeper into photography because I had just bought the X-T4...

I wish I'd skipped the X-T4, too. Due to the pandemic I didn't get to try it in the hand. It was much bigger than my well-loved X-T2, and yeah I hated the flippy screen. I had the X100F until a dial broke and really did love the X100V - got used to the lack of buttons on the back (just) - and took some of my favourite ever photos. I ended up with the XT-30II and do love it.

As an professional photographer and X-H1 owner, I totally agree with your criticisms of the camera. While it's market position was built around being a hybrid, the X-H1 is an absolutely horrid hybrid experience. When I approach a job with these boxes, it's either or. Switching between the two systems is just too inconvenient. So why do I own two of them? Well at after the release of the X-T3, X-H1 bodies could be purchased for $700-$1000 off brand new plus accessories. Sometimes it really is about price. It was the perfect upgrade from the X-T20 I was using and I personally do love the huge grip. It's very comfortable for me.

I love my XH-1, was my first Fuji camera and oh boy, i thought It was more comfortable than my old Canon 750D and a Sony A7ii. but I can see why it wouldn't suit everyone. top tip, the grip apparently makes it a heck of a lot faster switching from video to stills mode and you can customise all the buttons now with firmware update so you can quickly video with a single button press.. apparently.

I bought the GRiiix for the exact same reasons (a three year old and a baby). What I will say is that it works very, very well in tandem with the GRiii when we are out and about. I can fit both into a very slim "fanny pack" waist bag that I can wear even with a baby carrier and a baby strapped to me. I can pull out the iii when I need wide or the iiix when I want narrower, and both cameras take up less space than an ILC with just prime one lens on it. When I am at home in lower light situations, I do reach for the Fuji X-E3 with the f/1.4 Viltrox primes, but out and about, the combo of the iii and iiix can't be beat for family photography. Oh, and I hear they are good for "street photography" too, lol! :)

My number one favourite camera, to date is also my number one regret camera: The Fuji X pro 1. I bought it in 2019 for some of the more obvious reasons - it was $300 CAD and was a rangefinder -style camera. The good was the image quality. Still some of the best photos I think I have ever taken. High ISOs sing with true colour representation at its top 25,600. My main complaints were with the lack of actual manual focus capabilities with native fuji lenses - especially the pancake primes with terribly unpredictable focus by wire. This meant autofocus only, which in my mind defeated the purpose of the camera. Along with the OVF not having any useable way to check focus in manual, it was disappointing. The cake topper, though, was the battery life. I would usually get about 30 mins of use with one new battery, even after a few charge cycles. For the price, I even bought a second one to make sure mine wasnt faulty. It was then that I asked a few fuji shooters online and found that it truly was that bad. So a rangefinder style gimmick with poor battery life and amazing image quality. Oh well.

The Leica M8 was pure torture. I had it and the XPro3 at the same time because I though they would compliment each other but it just felt like I had a $1500 ticking time bomb with the M8. The shutter sound, the buffer, the dead pixles, the purple blacks and of course the crop (I love a true 50mm). But I took some really great photos with it in that short time and felt there was something to RF shooting. So I went all in and traded the Xpro3 for an M240, and picked up a used X-T2 to keep hybrid shooting around. It's been wonderful (I still miss the M8's finish though).

As an RX100 vii owner, I love this thing. I mainly use it as a secondary camera along side my mirrorless that's paired with a fast prime when I travel. Instead of carrying mutliple lenses for my mirrorless, I just have the RX100vii. I mostly use it for longer focal lengths to save me from buying/lugging around a 70-200. Lowlight performance is pretty bad though. I wouldn't want it as my only camera, but it would fill that role in a pinch.

Which cameras I should have skipped? A bunch of Pentaxes to be honest. I started with the K100D Super. I can't fault that. Even though the UI was clumsy (not enough buttons), it was my first proper camera. But afterwards I got the K-7, K-5 and K-3. Then I jumped to Nikon. I think I should have done it sooner. I think... the K-7 was too noisy, and the K-3 didn't offer that much to me over the K-5, except for resolution. The K-5 was good, the K-5 II(S) is better. I actually think those are there best Pentax DSLRs, relative to their age. But the K-7 and K-3... I don't know.

The camera I bought, didn't use much and sold for a small loss was my Fujifilm X-E3. Nothing wrong with it really but as a pocket camera I must prefer using my LX100. The image quality of the Panasonic definitely can't match the Fuji for for some reason I just prefer using it.

Do not forget the X-E3 and after were specified down on controls. best to stick with the X-E1/2. The LX100 II is probably the last of a line of just about affordable well specified cameras just hanging on and the beleaguered camera industry as a whole has had to either heavily trim their sails or ramp up prices and focus on high margin kit. I steer clear of expensive fixed lens cameras myself as they have no dust mitigation apart from the Ricoh GR III with its shaker which shows it can be done. Of course a little replaceable sticky hatch in the base of the camera would not be too difficult to give the dust somewhere to hide and eventually exit the camera. As a gearhead myself the idea of a mere 5 cameras I regret buying would be nice. if the camera buying community were rational, sensible and consistent in buying kit the industry would disappear overnight.

Fantastic video! We bought two of the Panasonic S1 and accompanying lenses: 50mm f1.4, 24-105 f4, 70-200 f2.8; everything we need for a full day of event/wedding coverage. The continuous autofocus let us down over and over that we had to figure out how to make those out of focus shots a part of the edit, it stretched our creativity. The other issue with that system, it wasn’t so lightweight. They were hefty cameras and bulky lenses. We bought it for unlimited recording, good heat dissipation, excellent stabilization, all the stuff Panasonic does well. But alas we sold it all and are on the Canon R5 and R6 now with zero regrets.

It's just so cheap at around 500 USD used, and new for 900, and it does iron out many kinks of the original a7. I don’t have many regretted purchases of cameras except maybe the 5D mark II. It was the last Canon body I ever got before I switched to Olympus. In fact, it kinda convinced me TO switch. I had a 1D mark IV and thought the 5D would make a nice second shooter and portrait use camera, but it constantly needed focus tweaking for any lens that wasn’t brand new and would often miss even in perfect conditions. After trying an Olympus E-M5 II, I soon sold all my Canon gear and now use an E-M1 II and Pen F for my professional work. Never looked back! Only thing I miss about Canon is the lovely old 85mm f1.2 L. Far from a perfect lens but what a look it gives when you get it right.

I had a Sony a7 with a kit lens. Then I was lucky to find a Leica t at a great price. After shooting with the Leica just once, I knew the Sony had to go. May be it was the Sony kit lens, may be it was the camera. In any case I didn’t regret selling the A7. Then I bought an Olympus e-pl8. It came with a 14-42mm kit lens that you can buy used for $45 on eBay. I was blown away with how good the pictures look and started buying more Olympus lenses. I have the 45 f1.8, 75 f1.8. They are both great and affordable. Compared to the Leica lenses on my t, the Olympus lenses aren’t far behind. I feel like I am getting 80% of Leica quality at 10% of the price. I also bought the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 lens for the Olympus. The lens cost about $100 used on eBay. Juan Buhler did a KZbin video on this lens. You can see the results there. I think the Olympus e-pl8 with the Panasonic lens is probably the best value in camera history! I love Olympus color science. It has a unique look. It’s ibis is probably the best in the industry. Focusing is fast, at least fast enough for me. In any case, I love my Olympus as much as the Leica.

The Fujifilm X100F. It's a fine camera, but in my inexperience at the time I entirely misjudged it for its use case. I take a lot of photos near water, and the fixed focal length turned out to be super limiting as 'zooming with your feet' often wasn't possible without taking a dive. I managed to trade it in, and buy another interchangeable lens camera during a promotion and thereby limited the financial loss. The price of learning I guess... I still like the X100-series, but it's just not for me.

Yes, I am much more drawn by the 40mm equivalent than the 28mm. I have the Zeiss Batis 40mm for Sony and I love the focal length in between 35 and 50mm. Super versatile allround lens, 28mm can be too wide at times in my opinion.

I sold it because I realised when I'm carrying a baby in my arms, 40mm equivalent is a terrible focal length! The 28mm is perfect to take beautiful close up shots of my daughter, and the GRIIIX just came along at the wrong time. I had a quite similar A7II problem recently. I had the A7 for my vintage (mostly Konica) lenses and thought that IBIS would be nice to have so I bought a used A7II but I don´t like the look and feel of it. For me the A7 is a much better match with the old lenses, with the metal dials, the small grip and the glossy black finish it is a little vintage itself. I´m happy I didn´t sell it yet, it is definitely the keeper.

Had an original 5D that I was in love with. Broke it and replaced it with a 6D. It's a nice camera and I still own it, but it has no soul.. Also had an X100F that was life changing for me. I broke that one as well, and replaced it with the V. Removing the D pad, and the button to switch the rear screen on/off really, really turned me off. I don't like when they add features but reduce usability. Basically, I just want a powerful P&S with a nice lens. I need a Leica Q next I think. I've never shot video before, and really don't like changing lenses. Just give me one focal length and I'll figure out the rest. When I have a bunch of glass to choose from, my creativity disappears.

Very similar to the x100 line, if not just as good or better even. And the xf10 easily slips in any pocket. Also it has a 28mm 2.8 lens same as the Ricohs, which for street and most scenarios, is perfect. I got caught up in DPReview BS and it ruined the fun for me. I’m SO glad I found you and other creators who focus on enjoyment first, and image quality second, and specs never! I wish I’d known about the Ricoh GRDs and Pentax Q back then! The only recent camera I wish I hadn’t bought was the Sigma SD Quattro… that sensor seems like the worst of all worlds, and the images I got with the kit lens were very bizarre with a jarring sense of overlapping images, almost like old red and blue “3D” images. But it had such good ergonomics and build quality, got me looking into other foveon cameras and that was a great thing!

So far, I think I can't say I really regret buying any cameras, even if I lost quite some money buying several I didn't enjoy as much as I thought I will... The main reason is : it's because I bought them, that I have the camera I enjoy so much now. They are all part of the process of finding something enjoyable to shoot with and are a plain part of my photography journey. And they make me realize that there is no need for the greatest, latest fully featured camera. At least, it's no necessarily the best one for you and in your heart. The best example is my favorite camera so far : my actual Sigma fp. The only camera I ever rented, not quite enjoyed at first, and finally fell in love and bought it few months later. Not perfect, lots of things that could annoy some or be a dealbreaker for others, but I love it and enjoy shooting with it a lot! 😉

I regret getting my modified camera from KolariVision. Hear me out on this. In order to see whether or not I'd like such styles of photography (turns out I do!), I went with the least expensive setup, which wound up costing me somewhere around $500 CAD all in, and it was a modified Canon ELPH 180 or 185. The thing is a royal pain to hold due to just how thin it is, the battery kills itself in about an hour of being on, and while it definitely helped me decide if I wanted to get into such or not it left me asking why I didn't just pay twice as much and get a Lumix GX8 or GX9, or at minimum a somewhat better point and shoot.

Regarding the X-H1, no, as mentioned in the vid, when needing to work quickly it certainly isn't as quick as just pressing a button for video, but for casual shooting I don't find it a hassle either. It's one switch, you keep the vid settings in silent shooting mode and they are saved; when you want stills you simply turn one dial back to the still setting...which are saved as well. (Lots of people actually don't know that you can save settings between stills and video I've discovered) As Mattias pointed out, lots of issues come down to personal preference as we are all built differently. In fact, it's size and weight to accommodate it's IBIS are factors which in some ways work against me personally because I have smaller hands. I went through a short phase after I got one where I was annoyed with it and missing my X-T2 and wondering if I made the wrong choice over a Sony this or that. . (would still have an X-T2 if it had IBIS and probably never feel compelled to upgrade..but I digress) But that was until I actually used it on gigs and realized it's seeming indestructible nature was an advantage. There is NOTHING cheap feeling about this camera. Nothing. I've learned to shake hands with the weight by telling myself that it helps stabilize the footage when panning haha. Also, I enjoy utilizing vintage glass so its' stronger mount is reassuring for me because I use heavy vintage glass quite often. It is indeed presently one of the best bangs for the buck no doubt! If I could find anything which comes anywhere close to what I love and need in this camera for less than $800 US (!) I would consider switching for more comfort in form factor alone. But until Fuji releases an X-T2, maybe even X-T3 with IBIS haha, it is what it is and I'll not part with it. Yes, I realize there "are" some models which come close, but I know of NONE which have the screen for flip down/vertical design for shooting at low angles which is a must have for me, IBIS, IQ, weather resistance, etc. etc. Peace. Fun video to get us all thinking!!!

As an owner of the RX-100 5A I could not agree more. I have basically stopped using it for stills, I only grab short video clips when I see something I like. It's in a weird spot for me: the body is very small, yet surprisingly unexpectedly unwieldy. The grip is tenuous and feels very vulnerable to damage, but the body is very bulky and dense for the size. Even though it has a lot of features, it seems just slow enough to boot up and be ready that I miss opportunities to grab a clip or shot which would be better to use my phone for, but at the same time the phone quality doesn't match up for me. Treating it like a DSLR on a trip gives me the best results: have a power bank /spare batteries in your pocket, go on a shoot where you are prepared with it always ready in your hand. It is very richly featured but just limited in certain ways enough that you only end up using this camera if your needs are exactly in the range where this camera's features and limitations fall exactly in line.

Can't explain it, maybe It's the size, or the form factor, but the X-H1 never makes me want to go out and shoot as my xpro2 does. Lately I've been tempted to find an x-e4 with the 27mm because the xpro 2 remains bulky, even with a 23mm f2. The weight and size didn’t bother me as much as all things that kept going wrong or at least sketchy. Now it won’t turn off for over 3 minutes after switching it off. It now seems to not switch from one battery to the next as the battery runs down and same goes for the Sd cards as one fills up. Also if you leave a battery in it for more than two days it goes totally flat. Getting it fixed is out of the question due the cost, so now it just sits on the shelf and collects dust. Hej Mattias! Ricoh GR is one I still have, but sure it has its flaws, like sucking up dust when you turn on the camera as the lens moves forward, depositing the dust on the sensor (eventually fixed with the GR III). The dust enters via the exposure compensation button (totally redesigned on later models). The Nikon D3200 had very dull colors, while its successor the D3300 switched to a much better sensor, and overall much better pricewise (I paid full price for the D3200, and then Nikon themselves sold off the D3300 for €350)! So the D3200 was a bad investment, the D3300 still soldiers on. Olympus C-8080 had a lot going for it, but was a total failure if you tried backlighting (motljus as we call it). It goes to history for its RAW shooting speed, today there are cameras taking 60 RAWs per second, the C-8080 takes three per minute! Lovely for closeups, though and when used with a flash it is just perfect. The camera's sale failure almost killed Olympus, but mine still works. The best single-hand camera there is, as long as you have a right hand, that is. But avoid RAW! Pentax K-5, the top model at the time had almost everything going for it, but the AF was terrible, and then the card reader failed on mine. Got a new K-5 from Pentax for free, but sold it ASAP and all my other Pentax gear at the same time (I kept my very first Pentax and a Limited lens!). The Nikon 1 range has failure-prone lenses (the obvious reason for Nikon to close down the N1 range and scrapping the DL range, just after its presentation to the press and invited guests, as it used the same lens mechanics). But as a replacement to TCs for Nikon owners they are pretty impressive, like a 2.7x TC with no loss of light, with 20.4MP (using the same sensor as in the RX100 and its siblings). It sure works for me! A few Nikon 1 lenses use metal gears in their aperture mechanism, so are totally problem free: 10-30 PD, 6.7-13, and the superb 70-300 CX, the best 70-300 there is for any format! I have a D600 and a D7500 that was worked flawlessly for years!

There was only one camera that I wished I didn’t purchased. It was back in the film days. The Nikon Pronea was just not properly marketed and didn’t get the whole industry onside. In the end it was just a novelty that had limited use and no potential for any upgrades.

I owned the Sony A7ii and a bag of lenses, just couldn't seem gel with the system (and the batteries sucked), sold it off. Tried again last year with the A9ii and 1 lens, took great photos, but just couldn't get into Sony's cameras so I sold that too.

For someone that disappointed in these cameras you sure got the best out of all of them. You should just buy the least expensive I’m sure you’re photos will come out amazing 🤩

I do like my X-H1 for stills, but yeah, the grip is not as comfortable as the Nikon Z cameras or the Panasonic G9. The G9 is the one I wish I skipped. For features and ergonomics it was fantastic, but it always felt very sluggish and unresponsive and I was never quite satisfied with the image quality and colors. I sold an a6400 to buy the G9, and have since sold the G9 and bought a used Nikon Z6, which I am pretty happy with. (Manual lenses only so I don't know or care if the AF is any good.)

The X-H1 is actually on the exact opposite list for me. I wish I kept it. The colors for stills were beautiful with the X-Trans Sensor. I sold it for the X-Pro 2, but I just didn't enjoy the X-Pro as much as I thought I would have. I ended up trading the X-Pro 2 for an X-E3 + 23mm lens, and I'm now trying to get rid of that. It was just an endless cycle of disappointment after the X-H1. Now I use the X-H2 and I couldn't be happier.

Fortunately, my "need" to buy more cameras has stopped a little at 2 digital and 3 film ones. Still want an XPro3 but can't really justify it having an XT3 already, and watching this video really makes me understand even more that getting expensive gear is not really worth it.

Trust me, you’d rather have an Xpro2 or X100F than Xpro3. Coming from a dude who owned both xpro2 and 3

@@cameralabvietnam Man, the XPro3 is awesome. I certainly can understand people were expecting something else, but I think the concept of a digital camera that slows you down a bit is pretty innovative. My only problem with it is being almost an XT3 on a different body for like 30-40% more money.

@@jzayas5698 if you want to be slowed down just turn off the lcd screen on your xt3 and set all the nifty crazy symbol and metering to the bare minimum like the ovf in xpro3. There you have it, the xpro3 slowing down magic.

I have used different cameras in my life. Some are better than others but I did not feel any regret buying any of these. They served me well according to their specs and what their operating manuals tell they can do.

If Sony had put unreliable in the menu it would have saved me a lot of money 💰 💵 😂

My first DSLR was a Canon EOS Rebel XS. Wow, I hated it. Couldn't stand having to mess with the menus. It largely killed my interest in digital photography. I did buy a Canon T2i body later on, but that was purely for an experiment with video. I still have them, but will probably be selling them soon. This Rebel XS soured me so greatly on digital that I decided I would return to film. I then bought a Pentax ME Super and a Pentax Super Program. I hated both primarily for the ergonomics. I'm about to dip my toe back into the digital waters and am currently leaning toward the Nikon D700.

Sony battery technology really needs to improve. I love their RX100 line and the ZV-1 and I own an A7II - which are all great, but the battery life hinders full enjoyment of the devices. The ZV-1 bugs me because I cannot access the SD slot unless I take it off of the shoe mount. Great video and you have a great voice for narration!

Regrets are lessons learned. So in a way regrets are more valuable than success. They make you evaluate yourself deeply. And find what you actually need in life.

Canon RP, however I think it's more the focus by wire lenses (is that the correct term?) I'm not enjoying as I quite enjoy using FD lenses on it.

If you adapt EF lenses you get non by wire and they even preform better than they did on DSLRs. Thats what I use for all pro work. Where I work we only have one RF lens.

For me it was the Pentax KS2. The aperture solenoid issue happened to the first and then on the subsequent replacement I bought. No point sticking with a camera that you can't trust 100% to work. Now I use an EOS M5 and EOS M6 ii and they are reliable and so easy to use. .

Should have let the fuji xe3 alone haha it's not a bad pick, and has great quality for the price. But for my uses, it just fell short, and got left behind on most occasions. Great video as always, congratulations on the new baby 👶 👏

I am always struggling with my Fuji X100V. It’s a great camera and after trying a lot of picture styles, I found myself the happiest with the standard style. And now I love the pictures coming out of this little thing. But Indians myself a lot of times taking the bigger Sony a7III or a film camera with me, instead of the Fuji. I still try to find my usecase for the Fuji between the other cameras because in the end I can’t give it away, yet.
