Hey Emma, I'm glad you are back! I think you made a great point about job hopping. While stability is great, moving from company to company expands your knowledge but it's the quickest way to promotion! I've went from a PM, to SR PM, to PMO Lead to IT Director. It would take years doing this at one company but I did this in a span of 25 months. I guess CTO is next!! - Oh, another good point is when Job hopping to try Small companies (including start ups), mid-sized companies and of course the large giant companies to see what you like! I really enjoyed working for a start up as the reward of succeeding is great but I currently enjoy working for Mid-level companies.

Interesting, my point of you on some points are : first job : Don't stay too long but when you arrived to 8-10 years of experience stay a little to make a network in your company and maybe detected as a talent. If you change too often, you have not enough time to be detected as a potentiel for the company. being good at work : Totally agree with you. You have to do good job but after years you see that people who progress are not always the best. Don't under estimate networking.

Number 2 might be controversial but I don't think it's much of a discussion. There's no question that personal relationships usually are an equal if not a greater factor for promotions than adequacy, unfortunately.

If you have a good easy job you should use that time to build valuable credentials, second degree and a side buisenss that you could potentially grow into a real buisenss such that when you do get laid off you just transition to your own buisness or contract/pivot with that new degree/credential. If you job hop into a shit show you will be too tired and stressed to do the aformentioned, dealing with lunatics and those that dont respect your time because this or that dead line is approaching, you can really get derailed on your buisenss and credentials. W2 employemnt in the USA has too few protections and it should be used as seed money for your own thing.

That’s a good idea and definitely a strong approach. Thanks for sharing. Have you been able to do something similar? I think it’s tough to think of the right idea worth investing in, but if you have an idea, it’s can definitely pay off!

How would you respond to the same Barbie comment today after all this experience?

That's a good question - I think I would attempt to address it in the moment in a light hearted way and then afterwards address it more directly.

@@RecipeforSuccess1 thanks for your response. Would you raise it to HR under the terms of harassment? Just to log it. Honestly, whoever manager that says this Barbie term to an employee is actually very insecure himself and is not feeling right on the inside...
