Real life doesn't have alternate endings. When something didn't work as the way you wanted, you have no choice but accept it and move on. This movie is all about it.

The train scene breaks and warms up my heart every single time, takaki knew she noticed him,he waited for the train(life) to pass away as he stood there patiently frozen in time thinking that she'd do the same, but now he knows, she wasn't waiting, she had already broken free of her frozen time, takaki smiles and moves on,his time has started to flow again.

This movie taught me a very important lesson: If you really love someone, don't waste any time, and confess your feelings before it's too late. Tomorrow, that person might be far away, and you might spend years looking back and thinking about what "would have been" if you had just tried. And, believe me, it's much harder and takes much longer to get over something like that, than to get over a rejection. Don't waste your chance; if you miss it and let the years go by like Takaki did, all you'll see once you turn back will be the empty space on the other side of the tracks.

It's too bad I discovered this movie six years late (and the top comment seven years late). Since then, I haven't found anyone else like her. She is still alive and doing well like Akari, but she's currently living a different life in a world different from mine. For anyone else reading these comments, definitely take the top comment to heart because you might eventually find yourself regretting a missed opportunity to share your time with that special person.

People saying "He could have run after her" are missing the point. The song outright states what his mind has been like over the course of a decade or more. The quick cuts between all the different spots in the city representing his hopeless searching for her when going about his daily life. He keeps seeing her wherever he looks, in the form of other women who might or might not share her traits (they could have a similar smile but at this point he might just be seeing it that way). Yet he knows deep down none of them can really be her. So when they finally pass each other, it is enough for him to stop and wait (since her memory still lingers with him) but after so many years he takes it for granted that it can't really be her. So why would he run after her? I would say he is a hopeless romantic but that's perhaps not the most apt description. More like a self defeating romantic. On the one hand he has reserved himself to the reality he will never see her again (and that should be enough to move on) but on the other hand he is still bound to her memory, taking second glances at others when they remind him of her.

I see where you're coming from and I agree to an extent. There is indeed a lot of important symbolism and all. but the point where my belief deviates from your is when you say he's just holding on. He actually smiles and walks away, and that's supposed to represent that he's decided that she's moved on, and it's now time for him to do the same. That's the reason he didn't run after her.

In the manga, you can see something very interesting. It is the little Akari who says goodbye to him from the other side of the bridge. In his own heart, it is his own way of imagining a departure and a new start for himself, by accepting to say bye to the Akari of his memories and accepting finally that she's moved on Just so you guys understand the ending. It is about moving on. What Takaki loves is not the Akari of today, but the Akari he remembers from their younger years. So what he loved this whole time is someone who has changed and is no longer the same. Him being unable to move on and accept it is what caused him so much suffering and made his other relationships disfunctional.

Right now this anime and this comment helped me get over the breakup with my girlfriend. I loved her with all my heart, but she left to study in another country and has no plans to return. On top of that, she realized that she loved someone else. I thought that I would never be able to stop loving her and find someone even as wonderful as her. But now I realized that the person I knew was gone forever. Over the years, she will change and the one I loved will exist only in my memory. This is her life path and if she is happy, then I can only wish her luck. And now I have to move on. There is no destiny. Or rather, if you thought that this girl was your destiny, but she found happiness with someone else, then you were wrong in your assumptions and you need to find that unfortunate woman who is also looking for you. After such thoughts, I surprisingly felt better. And now I can definitely say that there is no bad ending in 5cm :)

To be honest. This movie taught me that when it comes to someone you TRULY love. You should chase them to the end of the world. As they say. Wherever theres a will, theres a way. While i do agree with the original goal of this movie that you should confess your love to someone you love before it's too late. I also think that the main character made a big mistake by not going after her. Even the ending song says "Itsudemo sagashite iru yo" which means "I'm always searching for you". That is why i hold this movie so dear cause i learned one of (In my opinion) the most valuable live lessons you can learn.
@rosePetrichor

It's not just about losing love. It's about losing the things that make you able to fall in love so innocently when you are young, and youth itself. Takaki is shown in a relationship with another woman through texts, but he feels nothing for her. He drifts through a stereotypical working life numb and broken. The child who eagerly planned a train journey across the country and wrote a love letter is gone, and it's that which he is seeking just as much as Akari herself.

This movie taught me a very important lesson, that has a very personal meaning to me. A girl joined my class, and as the year progressed, I only watched from afar. I loved her but I never told her. I found out near the end of the year that she would transfer to a different school the next year. There were so many things I wanted to tell her, so many feelings I wanted to express, but I never had the courage to tell her how I felt. I even planned it all out, but when the time came, all I could manage was a few mumbled words. I want to thank this movie for getting such a powerful message out there, from the bottom of my heart.

I love this scene. The trains represent their particular different paths. How they both went in different directions and then met for a few seconds just to keep on going in different directions. It represents both the short amount of time they spent together and also their meeting right now. And even tho here they meet again. Once again they keep on going into their on directions just like the trains. The fact that he waits for them to pass to see her expecting that she ll do the same is even sadder. Because it shows she only sees him as a fainted memory, while he still keeps her in his heart. He realizes that, that s why he goes back to his path, finally free, finally understanding it is really over. A really sad and meaningful scene many people don t really get.

The ending was so powerful, some people might think its cliffhanging. But its enough for me to understand what it means. Both of them was realizing in the rail road but they need to move away a bit to avoid the train its simbolize their separation when their parents change their home location. Then in the opposite of the road both stop and look at each other but the train prevent them to seeing each other, the train simbolize the distance and lost contact that prevent them to stay connected. 2 Train simbolize how long it separate them but Takaki stay waiting until the train ends simbolizing Takaki's loyalti but Akari didnt wait until the train and leaving simbolizing that she already moved on from Takaki. Realizing that Akari already moved on, Takaki stands still there without word. He didn't chase her after because he understand that Akari already moved on. After a while Takaki accept it and move on simbolized by him smiling and moving forward the opposite way of Akari's direction. this story teach us that the world doesn't always goes as what we wish even though we already giving our best like Takaki's loyalti. Yes its hurts and painful but it teach us to live with the scars by accepting it and move forward like Takaki did. Applying that the scar teach us to live with it the world is still there for us

From my perspective, this movie emphasizes the strength a bond can have. Even when you are not consciously aware of it. After moving away, Takaki had lost contact with Akari to the point where he had almost completely forgotten about her. But even after forgetting about her, he is unable to move on with his life. The pain from his heartbreak had caused him to quit his job and break up with his girlfriend. Akari's life, however, had taken a different turn. She had managed to move on with her life and marry someone else. Yet despite that, she still feels a sense of incompletion. The feeling that she is missing something, or someone in her life. A bond is like a piece of string. When the two sides are pulled away from each other, the middle continuously gets thinner and weaker. Thin enough that you would believe it could break at any second. But what if it never breaks? What if it still manages to hold both sides together with its weak grip? Then to repair it, all you have to do is stop pulling it apart.

just realized what's the meaning of that end after many many years. its about letting go the person you really love. Mc finds the girl he really loved. and its just the other side. HE WAITED FOR HER but found out that she's no longer waiting for him ( Indicated that the girl is married to other man or in short MOVED ON) soo that smile in the end indicates that the boy is now FREE OF shackles from the past of his Love In So the real meaning here is that. He's already moving on because he knew. its really all over- That man just want some clarification before he do that. And this scene is the proof Of that Soo. its still a happy ending for me (in my perspective) because the boy can now move on and focus his life, maybe look for permanent partner

I love this anime mostly because I can relate to him and I don't get "depressed" by the ending, to me my first girlfriend was a marvelous person, she worked hard and always had this feeling of freedom around her, by the time I hit 10° grade I became so much depressed and angry at the education system for something that they did to me(different story), I stopped seeing her and we were always in that relationship of hoping that you want to save it, but don't know how, so we eventually broke up, the most natural way. I eventually became "stable" again, but always had this thought "what if I had just holded on a little more" "how would I be like today if I was still with her", has the years go by I couldn't get in any relationship, but you wake up one day and be like, fuck this Im moving and ain't looking back, nowadays Im with this girl, and I am proud of moving on, this girl is the most cheerful person i ever met in my life, she is always smiling, and when she isn't it hurts me too. He spends all this time searching for her and when he finally catches a glimpse he finally understands that there's no way he could truly control whether or not they end up together, and even if he could she wouldn't be the same as the image he's conjured in his mind over the years. We had this song playing in the background, with raindrops and wind. Stars were aligned for us to kiss, but I didn't make a move because she had S. ASSAULT past and I wanted to make her feel safe. When i watched this, i realized i wasn't the only person this happened to. It's a tale as old as time. It's time to move on. She never wanted me. Not really, We were too young to know what we wanted.

You know a great feeling. To watch this and feel good about the pain you went through. The pain has passed and I find joy in it now.

I've watched the movie 4 times and cried twice . I bought the manga version and there's more in depth about Risa and Tohnos relationship. Getting through the whole thing still left me uneasy after watching the movie lol

what i learn from this movie is that, boring life is beautiful life. part 1 & 2 was very boring for me to watch, but then this ending hit me. and then i realize how much i miss my school days, i was crying uncontrollably when this song ended i went to bathroom to at least hold it. but my room mate already called my friends because he didnt know what to do lol. dont take anything for granted, i always remind myself to this day. even when nothing happens i always be grateful for that. and im glad i watched this movie out of curiosity and not recommendation.
