Once in a while, I visit this video whenever I need to cry; it never fails me. The story of a friendship which, before we knew it, turned into a love story. Something some people can definitely relate to. They kept trying to make it work while being apart without admitting the feelings that had been developing towards one another. One thing for sure though, it had become more and more difficult to be relatable to each other. And at one point, not answering is the best thing they could do. But it never left their mind; everything kept reminding them of the other, from a mailbox to a snowflake. They knew they had to let go, it'd been so long since the last time; after all, the other might have already moved on. And then it became impossible, one of them found himself looking for her wherever he went, despite not knowing what to do if they really met. He became dull towards the concept of "love". While nothing reminded him of her, everything also reminded him of her. She'd occupied the majority of his heart before he could admit it. Now everything seemed unimportant, he just lived his life, shedding some of his time looking for her without knowing. And she had moved on. She still thought about him, everything still reminded her of him. But she knew the reality was not what she could change. Her only choice was to move on, which she did. She was now happy, and the memories of them in the childhood are still in her heart. The last scene, they both thought that the person who had just walked past themselves might be the one. And that was why he waited. And that's also why she walked away; it's not her reality anymore, he had been, was, and would always be the fondest memory of hers.
@tomasu3013 жыл бұрын
Sometimes, when you doubt yourself and allow negative thoughts to go, you will drown yourself into thinking "What if I did this, thing could change". No matter how good you are/were, you are human and you make mistakes. Some people are too concerned with what was and what will be. There is a saying: Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present. You cannot control everything happening to you, sometimes things happen because it happens. What you can do is: let go of the illusion of control, treat yourself nice, hangout with trusted friends, find your passion. One day, you will be able laugh at your younger self and nothing to be ashamed

@@EJ_Sergio_34 I agree with what you said. However, I also point out some differences. The case of Satoru is he will be in the coma and Hinazuki will move on because Hinazuki did not want to waste her life after Satoru saved her. And Satoru did find his another love after because he was destined to meet that girl. On the other hand, in Takaki case, he was the one who stopped writing letters in middle school because he thought Akari would be annoyed. And later, Akari moved on, while Takaki lived in the past. This is demonstrated in the novel where his dates were not like "Akari". Therefore, he dumped them. He has been looking for another "Akari" in his life. He only relieved at the end because he no longer worried whether Akari waited for him.

that might be true, but i think the main takeaway is that you won't ever achieve happiness until you let go of that feeling of longing. Akari was able to, and got married, whereas Tohno couldn't thus compromising his relationships. The end scene shows how they had similar chances at love, but Tohno never looked at Sumida and ended up unhappy. When they "meet" at the train crossing again and she isn't there when the trains past, Tohno finally recognizes that he needs to move on

The reason Your Name hits so hard was because of this film. This is what I’d say the foundational work of Shinkai. And possibly one of the best along with Garden of Words & Your Name. This gave us realism so much that when I saw his movies next time, I wanted Shinkai to be happy and create a good ending. I always felt there is a deep sadness within his works and all the more that made Your Name become a harder hit.

It's been 14 years since I first saw this movie, and I've finally begun to understand and relate to this movie all the way to my bones. I also had a girl I fell deeply in love with when I was a freshman in high school, and it took me 7 years to get over her. Even when I dated someone new, my first love would still be nagging at the back of my mind. Something clicked after those 7 years and after all this time, I've finally moved on. I've lost old friends and made new ones as well as I am now an adult. The reality shown in this movie is shaking. Life is a long journey, and the people you love will not always be the same people who will be with you in the future. The nostalgia of my youth this movie gives me is painfully melancholic, but it makes me grateful for the present time I have.

Trains and letters, moments left behind, He watches love drift further out of sight, In dreams he runs, yet still the clocks unwind, The sky too vast, their hearts no longer light. A love once near, now whispers from afar, Like distant stars, too faint for him to see. She walks ahead, beneath another star, And he still waits, lost in what used to be.

I think it is a bit more complicated than that. They both wanted to end it back then with their love letters so that the other can move on. Instead they tried to keep going. But one day he decided to stop writing so that she can move on. This was actually his decision. And she did. But he was still stuck in the past and distance. Still writing her messages he never send. Meanwhile she found a new love, gets married soon and seems happy. In the last scene they unfortunately met a last time and kept their promise. But also she decided to move on by herself. Which was his relief. He finally got his answer for a “what if?”. It hits pretty hard for sure, but it is a more realistic ending instead of overromanticizing the first (teenage) love so much, that it is more important than your current partner. She has moved on already and her feelings have changed. Additionally he was all stuck in a memorized version of this love which may also not be the same as a teenage love. I’m glad he is able to move on at least. I know how this inner conflict he is living through can paralyze you. It’s six years now since she broke up with me after 12 years. We were finally planning our marriage after many phases of distance relationship. But then it all collapsed because of minor things and unspoken issues. I’m still barely able to move on since then even though I tried to fill my life with other women or experiences. I even found someone I might have could loved again if I was not stuck so heavy in the past. I hope one day I can move on like he did.
