Balkans or even the Balkan Peninsula is the historical and geographic name to designate the southeastern region of Europe that includes Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, the self-proclaimed independent Kosovo, the portion of Turkey in the European continent (East Thrace) as well as parts of Croatia, Romania and Slovenia. The term derives from the Turkish word for mountain and refers to the Balkan mountain range, which extends from eastern Serbia to the Black Sea.
