The damaged buildings you saw are more than 100-200 years old and have cultural heritage status. Changing their facades, renovations require huge bureaucratic procedures, and sometimes years of waiting, which also involve large sums of money. My relative has been trying for more than a year to get approval to renovate the facade of the house. Unfortunately, the government does not have a unified plan to solve this problem.

I just got back from Tbilisi, Georgia from visiting my girlfriend for the first time and I have to say…It stole my heart. The people are so warm and full of love with all walks of life. If you’re a lover of the outdoors, you’re surrounded by foothills/mountains for hiking and winter sporting. Not far at all from bodies of water for water sports. The food quality is so pure with authentic ingredients that you can taste! Really thinking about relocating to Georgia. Thanks for this awesome video and to the Native Georgians that has made my experience so amazing.

I was in Georgia a few months ago. Visited Tblisi and the win region east of Tblisi. The balconies over the streets in the old town quite cool. Baku's old town also similar in style from Tbilisi's. Food and wine of course healthy and delicious. While in Tblisi, I spent time browsing the Dezerter Bazaar. I highly recommend checking out the Dezerter Bazaar. That was a fun visit. In Dezerter, I had fun conversing with a few of the fresh spice and food vendors in the multi-story market right in the center of the Bazaar area. Spoke to a couple of babushka sellers in both German and Russian. Last but not least, I tried homemade red sweet wine from one of the vendors. The sweet wine was delicious, and ended up purchasing that in a 1,5 litre plastic bottle ; the same type of plastic bottle used to sell bottled water. From the same vendor, I sampled moonshine chacha. As you may know, chacha is a pomace brandy made of a fermented combination of grapes mixed with olive oil that ends up being at least 50% alcohol. As you can imagine, if you drink one or two shots of chacha, that will really make you go cha-cha!! The wine in Georgia, I have found is really heavenly. As a matter of fact, I think I like the Georgian wine even better that what comes from France or California. After a tour of a few wineries in the Kharkeli wine region, it is plainly seen how meticulously crafted Georgian wine is (the way they carefully control the temperature of the storage vessels; the way they let wine ferment in vessels underground, even the shape of some of the bottles for retail sales, etc...). Everything sampling of wine I had tasted excellent. I came to Tblisi via Georgian Airways via Amsterdam. Georgian Airways does not have a good reputation, plus the airfare is pretty expensive for basic service. As of this writing, Georgian Airways only have 7 airplanes in their fleet, thereby not offering daily flights. However, they do have convenient time slots for non-stop flights from Amsterdam, Paris, Vienna on the days they do provide service. On my Amsterdam flight, the positive was that the aircraft was spotlessly clean and departed on time and got to Tblisi a bit head of schedule. Unfortunately, Georgian Airways did not have any entertainment for a 4.5-5 hour flight, plus they did not serve much in the way of refreshments. Some might find the seats in a Georgian Airway airplane hard and uncomfortable. In a nutshell, on the day of my Georgian Airway flight, they did transport passengers to Tblisi fairly comfortably, plus the views over the Georgian countryside approaching Tblisi is simply spectacular! Overall, Georgia is a destination that deserves a lot more attention as a great tourist destination that it is getting. My website www.schnitzing.com

It is very delightful that you visited my country. It's name is actually Saqartvelo, but foreigners know it as Georgia. Saqartvelo is a country of a very great and long history. It is a place where antique society used to live. The western part of saqartvelo was antique kolkheti , the country which existed the same time as ancient Greece. Kolkheti was very very rich, more rich than ancient Greece. Tbilisi is a fair city, but if you would like to get to know to real spirit of qartvelian culture, you should come to Kutaisi. This town has existed since antique time. It trully has an aura of some different feeling and existence. I am from Kutaisi and I can assure you that is is incredible. Also, as the owner of the channel has pointed out some buildings in Saqartvelo are not renovated. It is becasue of hard times my country went through. Future is ahead of us so hopefully we will be able to build a beautiful country with love, welcoming people and special spirit. I am glad that this place is an attraction for tourists. Lots of love and respect from me. Thank you very very much for visiting.

Tbilisi literally means the warm place due to its natural balmy underwater springs (sulphuric). As for the neighbourhoods that seem cracked are to be renovated and actually people did not do any renovations because of historical value of those buildings. They do not represent their poverty. People living they may be the richest in the city actually. The renovation started several years ago but because there are so many buildings like that it has not reached some of those neighboruhoods too. Blame the lame government. A very nice vlog! As a Georgian I am truly impressed!

Hey, thanks for visiting our country, you're welcome here anytime mate. just one correction since you mentioned it this many times. You're in the part of so called ''old Tbilisi", it means most of the buildings out there are more then 100 years old, so obviously they look old. We try not to touch (renovate and make it ugly) till they stand by itself, to keep their old historical look as long as possible. When its about to become problematic we go and fix it.

Most buildings in central Tbilisi have a status of cultural heritage. The government doesn't allow the owners to refurbish them on their own. The plan has to be approved by the Ministry of Culture. Which in turn takes months and years of bureaucracy. Hence, the result is what you see here.

The urban area where you are staying called Sololaki, is actually the most expensive place to live in. Most of those buildings are protected by the Tbilisi cultural heritage site, 1 bedroom apartment (30-40sq) costs a minimum of $150k (not renovated) and a 3 bedroom apartment can cost up to 3-4 Million dollars (or more). Imagine what their prices will be after Georgia joins EU and NATO 😅

The issue with old buildings in the central neighbourhoods like Mtatsminda and Vera is that they are part of cultural heritage which means the owners aren't allowed to renovate or rebuild anything it's the city's prerogative and the city isn't doing anything so we are forced to live in these conditions and hope for the best.

Those are some of the oldest buildings in Tbilisi and you're not allowed to renovate them, those are kind of special status buildings and the government/city hall needs to approve renovations and they won't approve it, they should mediate it so historical value isn't lost, and for that, you need a lot of money that people don't have, even those with brand new cars.

So it's difficult for an average citizen to do it. - If you wanted more cozy modern neighborhood you had to go to Vake or Saburtalo.
