Great video! The red post is called a post indicator valve and was connected to the underground fire main at the mill. They are used to isolate buildings or sections of the fire piping. The Cass mill had large steam powered fire pumps to feed the sprinklers and supply the hydrants/fire hose houses. Newer styles of these are still in use today at plants and large buildings.

Cass, WV is a delight to visit and enjoy some vintage locomotives and scenic train excursions. Trips up the mountain and a longer trip up to Durbin, WV (the past connection to the Western Maryland RR). If you can find copies, look for “The Durbin Route” and “Sawdust in your Eyes”, both about the old C&O route up the Greenbrier River and Cass, WV in its logging days. Thanks for the videos Jaw.

JT those old Shea engines wasn’t built for speed, but they would dang sure pull. I know a lot of the logging industries down here in south east Louisiana they used to use them there’s old dummy lines all through the honey Island, Swamp and out in the Piney Woods, where they went through there and cut all the virgin pine and in the swamp they cut all of the white and red Cyprus trees. There’s still stumps that you can see down there on the river and those things are 10 foot across the top of them and you can still see the notches that they cut into them to put the boards to stand on so they could get up there and cut them down but anyway another awesome video and as always you stay safe out there and watch your back and we’ll see you on the next one

That's the first time I've ever seen a shaft driven steam train 🚂🚆💚💛❤️
@robertf3479Ай бұрын
The "Shay" types are fascinating. Many of them worked in the woods, pulling flat cars loaded with heavy fresh cut logs out of the hills on very rough and steep tracks, many of which were abandoned and torn up again after a few seasons. As you can guess, these old dray horses weren't built for speed but have tractive effort that still puts many modern diesels to shame.
@rastaralph7154Ай бұрын
@@robertf3479 I was thinking they are all wheel drive unlike most of the ones I've seen. I used to love drawing them when I was younger and the pistons were always on the bottom at the front. I had the experience riding in the cab when I was a baby but I was told I just cried with the noise.

That looked like a pretty cool place. There is a small railroad museum just 15 min from my house here in Tn. The Little River Train Museum. There is a Shay engine on display and I think was the last one used to bring logs out of the Smoky mountains back when they logged this area. I know you said in previous videos that your steam engine views were down. For me personally why I like the steam engines and they sound cool they seem kind of lame anymore. They are so outdated and don’t have a huge amount of power. They don’t have the excitement and power of standing next to the modern equipment that’s on the rails now. Thanks for making these awesome rail places available for us to see! Where I live I never get to even hear a train horn or see one. Occasionally I can hear one or see it if my timing is right when I go to Maryville Tn. and they are taking something to or from Alcoa Aluminum.😊

I'm glad they got that stretch of track to Durbin reopened. We stayed in one of their rental cabooses several years ago. They railroad would push the caboose to what was then the end of the line down from Durbin. I got to see the washed out section of track. The damage was significant. The river washed the whole bank away, not just the tracks.

If you ever make a trip to the Texas State Railroad in Rusk, bring you a picnic and when you ride the train from Rusk to Palestine- you get out in Palestine and have a picnic while they turn the train around on a Railway Turntable (Wheelhouse). They use to serve small food and drinks on the train, but I haven’t rode it since I was a kid. Also they are looking for engineers to drive the train. Been seeing it on Indeed. But you wear many hats there for the little pay. You have to LOVE trains to have that job.

Thank you, Jaw Tooth, for another video from your trip to the Cass Scenic Railroad earlier in 2024. I found the switching of the steam engines from one track to the other track interesting to watch. Tis switch move was the way to move the engines off the mainline track to the track that tacks them to the engine house for servicing. You were talking about trying to capture one of the engines taking water from the water tank. Didn't you capture a couple of the engines taking water from the water tank on one of the earlier videos from this trip? I liked the portion of the video with the train going on the revitalized trackage toward Durbin, West Virginia. It is good to see that the Cass Scenic Railroad is adding "new" trackage to their system! (Posted 21 September 2024 at 2007 CDT.)
