Nice location Brian (1) the bang you heard was the slack running out from the helper engine cutting off on the fly … (2) the engines after cutting off were waiting on the dispatchers instructions ( once stopped you have to get permission to proceed ) (3) at 93 degrees all trains are operating on a “ computer generated “ heat order which reduces train speed substantially which effects the entire operation of these subdivisions. (4) cutting off on the fly is simply dangerous with the lengths of todays trains and the brake pipe hoses not being connected… you and Scott 👍~~~

Really an interesting place. I grew up in Nashville & my first job after graduate school (Vanderbilt, 1963) was at the AEDC in Tullahoma, maybe 20 miles north. It is an interesting line over the mountain here with a long tunnel at the top that predates the Civil War. The grade is steep both ways but this is really the only serious obstacle on the "J" line. While Normandy hill is steep it does not require a pusher. The dip does show in the camera and it is odd that going south there is a descending grade through Cowan than immediately a steep ascending grade all the way to the tunnel. I have been here many times. Jerry Sullivan, retired from Southern & CSX

While there is no Street running Cowan does bear a resemblance to a laid-back tourist oriented town. with friendly people. Besides the depot and the railroad displays by it @27:00 is the two-story brick building a former Tower or yard office building? Just watching the coal train bearing down on the hill It must climb was great. Then to see the units cut off on the Fly and then tuck themselves in the yard was great. On occasion we're still lucky here in Wisconsin to witness that on occasion south of Fond du Lac WI as some freights need an extra boost on Byron Hill. A touch of the South with the names on the CRYX cars. @28:13 BUBBA and @28:45 Possum Hollow. So thanks for the tour down in Dixie

Thank you for going to Cowan, Tennessee, Jaw Tooth, to record this video of the CSX trains going through Cowan on 7 August 2024. The manned helper engines are a throwback to the origins of this line. Just after the line was originally put into service, the railroad discovered that they needed manned helpers at this location to help trains get over the grade. The manned helpers on the last train in the video are the same manned helpers that cut off from one of a previous train in the video. After the train cleared the block, the manned helpers went into the yard. They must have gone to the opposite end of the yard where they waited for the last train and coupled on to it on the fly when they had the opportunity to do so. Delay In Block Productions did a video on the manned helpers at Cowen, Tennessee in June, or July 2024. DIB Productions presented some historical information about the Cowan manned helpers, and they also were able to tour the railroad depot museum. At the time that DIB Productions was in Cowan to record their video a CSX Heritage unit was one of the manned helpers. I do not remember which CSX Heritage unit was one of the two manned helpers, was assigned to serve at Cowan. Here is link to the Delay In Block Productions video on Cowan, Tennessee, and its manned helpers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHnXaXuYa9eHh5I The CSX Heritage unit in this video is the Chessie System Heritage unit. The Cowan Depot Railroad Museum tour is in a separate video/ (Posted 15 August 2024 at 2123 CDT.)

JT, that boxcar looks 19th century to me. Older than any of the other stuff there except the courthouse. Hey, there's a railroad tunnel about a mile or so east toward that dip. You have to walk/ride a trail to get to it. It was an important point in the Civil War. We never got to see helpers cutting on the fly before. Knew they could but never saw it. Now that was cool. Did you know back about 1800 that courthouse was considered a normal size family cabin. Even with 6-8 children.

I grew up in Tennessee, northwest from there. I think that is the same line that comes out of Nashville and runs down through Smyrna and Murfressboro. There was a sandwich shop when I was young in Smyrna that set right off the tracks. When you were in there and a train was coming, it sounded like it was gonna come through the building. It was very awesome.
