Hi. Where do I start? Previously, I have read The Comedy Bible and Steps by Step to Stand Up Comedy. Great books (How to structure jokes, etc), but I came across your video and took down your list of comedy/writing/Improv books and obtained them. I'm currently reading (and highlighting like crazy) Comic Insights - it really blew me away. I really enjoyed the deep dive into how to study comedians that make *you* laugh, breaking their jokes into their molecular structure and studying them. The portion on finding your honesty within your comedy POV and having the courage to speak it was such a revelation. I have been doing some Open Mics, but now I have more knowledge that will help my writing of not only the 'what' but the 'why' of comedy. I know doing videos is tough and many times you feel like 'Is it even worth it?'. I'm telling you it is. Thank you for sharing the knowledge you've gained through your comedy journey. You rock.

These books totally simplified the process for me! If you're brand new to writing comedy, I suggest starting with UCB's manual. If you want to start by boosting your writer-ly confidence first, then definitely read "Writing Down the Bones". It's life-changing.

All of them except for the first one, Writing Down the Bones, will help with being funnier when you speak! If being funnier in conversation is your goal, I recommend starting with What Are You Laughing At? If you're interested in stand-up at all, start with Comic Insights. Thanks for the question! Hope these help.

Thank you so much for watching!! I'd suggest you start with one of the stand-up specific books. Comic Insights, The Art of Stand-up Comedy by Franklyn Ajaye, or Tao of Comedy by Bobbie Oliver. Those two books will help you find what's really funny about *you*, which can help you both with stand-up and being funny around your friends. I also recommend taking an improv class, if they're offered in your area! If not, you can take something online. Improv comedy will help you gain confidence and express your funny. Coupled with the books, you'll find your comedic voice in the most fun way possible. Let me know if you try the books and enjoy them! Thanks again for watching.

What if you're hopelessly unfunny? Is there a specific book that can fix that fundamental lack? I occasionally try to write quirky, humorous stories and the feedback I get is mostly hostile, which makes me feel like Frankenstein's monster being chased through a village by people carrying torches.
@makegoodcreativenetwork8953
@makegoodcreativenetwork8953 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Word Rubble! You're not the first person I've talked to who has this problem... Often, it's a problem of audience/support network. I'd have to know more details to say for sure, but I'd say that either the people who you are showing your work to are unsupportive (and it's possible to get into a group of jerks on accident) or what you are writing is meant for a different audience. Have you taken any comedy classes, in person or online? Working with a comedy teacher can help you iron out whether the problems are in your presentation or in the choice of audience.
